I miss the fitness threads and the fitness Doms!

You can also try a sports drink. Something with some flavour might help combat the feelings of sluggishness. But, yeah, passing out is bad, and dehydration can utterly undo the effects of exercise by throwing off your hormonal responses, jacking up your body's stress levels, screwing up recovery, etc.

Hydration is your friend.

Someone mentioned a little while ago about seeing someone they hadn't seen, and that person commented about how they'd lost weight, how good it felt to hear that. Well, last nigth we all went out as a family to celebrate Eldest Son's birthday. My mother in law was there,a nd I'd not seen her for a coupla months. She looked at me and said, "You're shrinking. I hear you're working out." The lifter in me panicked. Shrinking?!? Then I realised that she was talking about the belly, whew.

Thirded.

Especially doing 80% cardio. Not enough water and the stress of cardio can lead to all types of bad problems.

To combat the sluggish feeling, try drinking small amounts of water spread out over time. Not all at once. But make sure you drink.

thanks for all the advice guys. unfortunately that is not what i wanted to hear. :( i do drink lots of water (not to mention tea and 100% juices) throughout the day, just because i'm often thirsty. i just cut out the fluids around workout time as it really does feel better. this is the way i have worked out for more than a year, and haven't noticed any issues beyond some mild light-headedness after the workout (which honestly feels kinda cool).

but i will heed tips and try forcing myself to take little sips of water throughout my cardio program, and maybe a few minutes before i start.

so no one else experiences these unpleasant physical side-effects from drinking while working out (liquid sloshing around in tummy as you move, body heavier, less energy and oomph, etc.)??

How do you drink? Is it all at one time? How much do you usually drink?

I usually just do a gulp or two of water every now and then throughout the workout and especially after an intense part.

the same...a gulp here and there but a bit more after each section of my workout (like moving from incline treadmill to weights or weights to abs). that is the way i did it in the beginning when my Master was showing me how to workout, and that is about how much he drank (except he would drink tons after).

I don’t drink when I do cardio. When I slow down it feels like I have to crank it all over again to get moving back to the same speed. It also fucks up my breathing, I fatigue fast if I don’t breath perfect.

So I drink on average about 500ml the hour before I start cardio, and I drink however much I want after. And it still feels good after. You got the residual runners high, plus the "look at my awesome, its white hot and intense" vibe.

When I lift, I tend to drink between sets as they get heavy. I keep up a rapid pace, usually leaving only enough rest time between sets to allow for changing the weight and giving LB enough time to do his sets. This means very short rest periods and thus a lot of sweating and increased heart rate.

Water intake increases as I get hotter and hotter due to metabolic activity.

When I bike, I grab water when I can. Given the heat and humidity during the times I ride, I have to consume a pretty fair amount. In the depths of summer heat, it's not uncommon for me to slug back two 1 liter bottles on a 45-60 minute ride. If I'm going to be out more than 60 minutes, I carry a Camelbak or something to allow for more fluids.

That said, I sweat like mad when I ride. If I don't make my own ghetto gatorade, I will usually slam a coupla potassium citrate capsules once I get home, and maybe some salt. I've gotten pretty good at reading my condition, and knowing when I need more electrolytes when biking.

As to stopping, well, I don't stop to hydrate, but biking on the street and trail-riding provides natural moments when intensity has dropped enough to grab a bottle from one of the cages on the frame and take a good swig. A couple of the guys that I used to ride with just could not master that skill. Really frustrating to have to flat stop while they hydrated. What was worse, was that one of them was a huge sweaty beast like me, so he needed to stop a lot. Personally, I think half of it was because he was a smoker, and just had no wind. He was using his clumsiness as a cover for his need to catch his breath.

I'm big on hydration. Before, during, after training.

I was taught to wait until about 15 minutes into cardio before taking the first drink, then small, frequent sips after that.

I do sometimes get the water-sloshy thing but I just ignore it. I acknowledge that by body is not always going to be at 100% every training session. Oh well. My body needs fluid and so it gets it, regardless of how it makes me feel.

I gave myself dehydration sickness once.

Once was enough.

p.s. Hommie, your friends who have a hard time drinking while biking should look into getting a small camel back, that's what I used when I was dirt biking. Easy as the proverbial pie.

Yeah, that's what I suggested. I have the belt model personally. It's not enough for a huge trek, but it beats not having water at all.

Hey, I meant to share this because it's so cool! My city put in an outdoor, core training circuit at the park, on the waterfront. It's so awesome! Lots of great exercises and stretching bars, even a padded area where I can stretch, skip rope, etc.

Best part? Our new place is about a 2min walk away! I am so ecstatic.

Here's some photos and stuff: Lakeside Park

My city is so freaking fit. LOL.

WTF

Don't get me wrong, I love fitness trails, wish I had one, it's like the perfect workout for me. But, whats with that equipment, its totally useless. I didn't see a single bar or rope.

It's for old people, no wonder you have it, they have all the cash. Damn old people.

WTF yourself! LOL.

There is a station for pull ups, one for dips, there are several core/balance stations. It's a fantastic little set up. There's even an elliptical trainer. Not the only equipment I would use, for sure, but still very good.

Pull head out of ass YC.

Tonight I went for my run. At the end, I stopped at the fitness area. I did 3 sets of pull ups, 3 sets of push ups, 3 sets of dips, used the twisty-stomach thingy (3 sets), and did 3 sets each on two of the leg-oriented thingies. Perfect. It's not much different than the home workout I used to do on the rock and that worked very well for me. It's like running +.

I know it says it's for seniors but that's bull. I see people of all ages and all fitness levels using it. I love it. So there.

it looks pretty sweet to me Keroin. it's especially cool that it's open for all the public to use, not just card carrying seniors. and i really dig all the yellow, my favorite color. :D

DELOAD WEEK

Squat Day

Worked up to 225x5, whee.

Called it done. I need the deload.

Yeah, I think the "free" part is the best. There are lots of people who can benefit from this who can't afford to go to the gym. It's in a sweet location, too, so for people who hate being copped up inside to work out it's perfect.

Lots of people are using it, too, even in the middle of winter.

I also like the yellow:)

Dear manual labour. This summer you teach me some lessons.

Dear kickboxing and wrestling - i am so so tired coming to training after a full days work. Feels like running on empty.

Dear weights. I will lift you twice a week until my form is rock solid.

Dear healthy food- you are good, but only delicious if i make an effort. I must expand my spice-rack.

My thoughts, from a few minutes ago:

"What is tomorrow?"
"Bench day, cool."
"Wait, no, deload."
"Damn."

While I may need the deload, damned if I don't want to push anyway.

Walked in my hiking boots. They feel ok. Socks could be longer I guess.

Due to yet another change in schedule and responsibility I may have no more time to work out.

*grr*

DELOAD WEEK

Bench day

Worked up to a mighty 135x5, so strong.

Then did a two-circuit pipe walk. Gotta have something more.

This is where I find myself. How does everyone fit exercise into their schedule? I cannot be the only mom with a crazy schedule. When I find I'm choosing between exercise and sleep, I have a lot of trouble making that decision (but I almost always choose sleep).

It is easier in warmer months when my kids and I can get outside. I can run while they ride their bikes.

I need to re-work my schedule so that I have time for everything that is important to me.

*cries and whines at the snow outside that I am missing this year*

It would SO be a good ski day. This is NOT the weekend. I finally feel like my guts aren't in imminent danger of rupture, BUT my house also looks like, well...kind of like an episode of hoarders is being developed.

I guess I'm so weak at this point that this will be a form of workout. But I really want to go for a ski.

It's been crazy cold this winter. Thank goodness for Walmart.

Yeah, you guys have been getting some crap weather. It's been cold here till about now, now we've got snow without the blistering cold.

I've been hobbling extra laps at Target, made me think of your Walmart laps. I'm sure they're smaller and lamer laps, but it's something.

It can be hard sometimes. If Sir gets on the machine late or we have problems I can't make it to the class I want. There are times when I get that "just can't be bothered" feeling especially if I'm tired. I do try to make it at least twice a week on our "off dialysis" days, and if Sir is going to be finished in time then I can pick a later class.

I know i could go during the day but I don't like leaving Sir alone for too long when He's on the machine, plus if I'm doing a class I have more motivation and push myself more than if I'm exercising on my own when I tend to slack off
