Quite the slackers lately, yeah. So nobody's expecting it -- now it will be a REAL surprise. I'll hopefully watch from the sidelines. There hasn't been a decent October Surprise in decades.
EDIT: Shall I tell my watching-from-the-sidelines anecdote? Sure, try to stop me.
I used to live in Bisbee whose Naco borough sat right on the Arizona-Sonora border adjacent to the Mexican town of Naco. Federales and revolutionaries fought hard there in the 1910-era revolt. Gringos would ride to Naco and sit on railcars watching the cavalry charges and artillery duels just across the border. It's fun watching a war from nearby (*) -- until bullets start whistling around you. These spectators luckily had railcars to duck behind.
(*) Washingtonions did this during the War of Southern Treason -- hang out on DC's suburbs watching the battles rage. This was before TV, remember.
The Naco battle saw the world's first use of military airpower. Pancho Villa's rebels had hired a gringo pilot to fly his biplane over the Federales and drop grenades on them. He flew; he dropped. He unfortunately dropped on the wrong side of the border, hitting a railside warehouse. You like irony? The general who hired him stored his Rolls-Royce in that warehouse. It went up in flames. The errant pilot prudently flew off to parts unknown.
Moral of the story: Watching from the sidelines can be hazardous but quite entertaining.
