Devon had just finished up another season of minor league baseball. He was 28 and the writing should of been on the wall. It was time to give it up. Finances weren't an issue. His family had wealth - his grandfather was the founder and CEO of an international distribution company. And he had a lucrative signing bonus out of high school, back when making the show was just presumed. Shoulder issues had derailed him to an extent. But even more damaging was the tragedy he endured during his best season at AAA ball was a curve ball he wasn't prepared for. His highschool sweetheart Sarah was driving down to see him. They weren't officially together but they both figured when his career was established they would be. Because his team was in the middle of a long home stand, they would be able to see each other every night for 2 weeks. She was supposed to make the trip with her brother, but he backed out at the last minute. According to witnesses her car had no chance when the 18 wheeler jackknifed in front of her. The driver was found to be under the influence of narcotics but only suffered a broken leg. Sarah's small Toyota was crushed.
Devon fell into a state of depression. He took a leave of absence for a week but when he returned he never regained his groove. He could rely on talent alone to continue a minor league career but unless his performance improved he wouldn't get called up. He felt empty but enjoyed the nomadic life style. He even enjoyed the bus rides through small southern towns and dying Midwest small cities. There were plenty of women along the way. Most were attractive and young. Some were actually girls he could see himself with if things were different. But of course things were what they were.
Over the summer his grandfather passed away. Devon was left his cottage in the woods. It was a place he spent much of his youth. It was very remote but Devon hadn't been there since he was 14. Baseball kept him busy from spring to fall and it wasn't a place easy to get into over the winter. It would be good to see the place again. It would be good to get away and come to terms with his future.
His SUV was packed with plenty of equipment. From fishing and hunting gear to cleaning products and yard equipment. He wasn't much of an outdoors man though. His idea of survival was being able to fall asleep against a window on a bus ride through a dirty dusty country road.
He had been driving all day. All the roads looked like one another and civilization seemed further and further away. That was good. He stopped to pee and instinctively whipped out his cell phone to check in with his mom. NO SERVICE. He put it back in his pocket and smiled. This is perfect, he thought.
On his way back to the SUV, he tripped on a vine. He didn't remember walking over it but then again he was tired and his mind was probably playing tricks on him. He heard a rustling in the bushes and slowly climbed in the SUV. It was probably just a rabbit or something, but you never know.
Another hour or so and I should be there. It should still be light.
He drove into the fading daylight. BUMP! He hit something in the road. Babump -bump-bump...I blew a fucking tire! I can't believe it! He pulled over to the side of the road. Well he had a spare at least. Too bad it was buried under all his stuff.
