I would not go as far as saying JoeW obfuscates on purpose as I suspicion it is the educational system that has rendered him incapable of rational thought.

The Random House Dictionary of the English Language, unabridged edition:

Moral:

1. of pertaining to or concerned with ‘right’ conduct or the distinction between right and wrong.

2. Concerned with the principle or rules of ‘right’ conduct; ethical: moral attitudes.

(note that the definition of “moral” includes usage of both ‘ethical’ and right/wrong)

Ethics:

1. A body of moral principles or values... (note ‘values’ is included in the definition)

4. Ethics: That branch of Philosophy dealing with ‘values’ relating to human conduct, with
respect to the rightness or wrongness of certain actions and to the goodness or the badness of
the motives and ends of such actions.

Ethical:

1. Pertaining to or dealing with morals or the principles of morality; pertaining to right or wrong
in conduct.

Truth:

1.True or actual state of a matter.

2. Conformity with fact or ‘reality’...

Reality:

4. philos. a. Something that exists independent of ideas concerning it, b. Something that exists
independently of all other things and from which all others things derive.

Objective:

7. Intent upon dealing with things external to the mind rather than with thought or feelings...

8. Of or pertaining to that which is an object or a part on an object; existing independent of
thought...

~~~~~~~~~~~
Morals, Ethics. Truth, Reality, Objective....as I mentioned in an earlier post, the relationship and
definitions of these words are intertwined and codefined as they relate to one seminal subject,
namely, again, that branch of Philosophy, Ethics.
Reason:
7. philos. a. The faculty or power of acquiring intellectual knowledge, either by direct
understanding of first principles or by argument. b. The power of intelligent and dispassionate
thought or of the conduct influenced by such thought.
Rational:
2. Having or exercising ‘reason’.
5. Of or pertaining to or constituting reasoning powers; the rational faculty.
This in somewhat delayed response to JoeW's denial of a rational system of ethics and morality.
I cannot discern JoeW's motive in attempting to make formal philosophy into gibberish, the motive of some is to justify faith, for others to rationalize secular humanism and relativisitic morality, or situational ethics.
But should the odd passerby desire to pursue a logical, reasoned approach to human ethics and morality, then the tools are at hand.
With no God critters or Utilitarians or Logical Positivists involved.
That is a favorite, but we also enjoy singing rousing renditions of "The Street Where You Live" in two part harmony.
Carson, you heartless bastard. I've had that song in my head for two hours now. :mad:
Do let us know when you find them, and all the best to the sages of Random House.
All right. I admit. I deserved that.
But let us stop now, before this escalates and someone starts singing "Horse with No Name."
Joe, I'm falling in love with you all over again. Don't you dare leave us again, dammit.
most of us just want to know the gross national product of Norway
It's 190 billion dollars. I just looked it up.
I have come to believe that homosexuality is a variant on the norm, like being left-handed. In former times, there was a social stigma on left-handedness, and teachers, etc. went to extreme lengths to correct this in any children that fell into their hands, even into the 20th century. This produced a host of negative results, including migraines, stammering, and bad handwriting, not to mention ruined sleeves from dragging one's arm across a copybook while sitting in a right-handed student desk. Yet a left-handed swordsman, permitted and encouraged to develop his skill, was at a definite advantage.
But I think there's something you should know ...
I'm not left-handed either.
Bah. Does no one here have a normal grasp of every single line of "The Princess Bride"?
:rolleyes:
Not that it matters that a majority of mensa candidates claim to be gauche ooops...left handed, a Science Channel program last week said neither nurture nor nature was responsible.
It seems that the thumb the fetus sucked while still in the womb determines left or righthandedness...
aint that a gas?
