It really needs to be done. A lot of extraterrestrial research can be done with refined radio telescopes but exploration isn't the only benefit to pushing technological boundaries, the first space race resulted in a generation of technological progress in a single decade which enhanced everything from food produced to mathematical progress to the development of wifi.
I would guess that trillion/s of dollars were collectively spent by various nations just trying to one-up each other on space-faring technology but I'd argue that the technological pay-off was more than worth it.

Summary: A new space race would make things better down here. Should probably get on with it rather than use NASA as the military piggy bank for when they need some more funding for magic invisible cheese grater stealth planes.

It's hard to imagine what we could discover next. Perhaps a cure for cancer or alzheimers or aids or...? lies in the nearby stars. We won't know until we go look. Yet I see no enthusiasm from either government or people in general. Instead I see "gimme more crap for free". To me that's more than sad, it's frightening.

In my mother's lifetime we went from outhouses and steam power to telephones and TV eventually arriving at wifi and The Cloud which can unravel and map anyone's DNA in a matter of hours. Where we go from here is up to younger generations who only seem to want their I-phone 9 to have a headphone jack again.

Maybe our politicians worldwide need to get serious about space exploration and stop with the razzle dazzle legacy crap. I don't know, perhaps I feel that way because I'm just old and tired. I just wish that people tried harder to be better than self serving pyl's.

Please stop generalizing young people like this. And don't use pyl as a derogatory term, that's not ok. NASAs budget has been lowered over the years as congress allotted more towards other programs (they gave more to the bank bailout than the space program in 2008  ). The budget has been growing over the years, but very slowly.

I want to know where all these people asking for "more crap for free" are because what I see is people working their asses off for very little as their wages don't keep up with the times while we give large tax breaks to companies that never keep their promises of creating sustainable, gainfully employed positions.

Good for you, Meeks. As a Certified Old Codger, I am often disappointed by my peers when they fall into Get-Off-My-Lawn-Jackass-Mode.

Gah.

I'm already half way in vacation mood, but J's really harshing my mellow. He's been so tight and moody for days now. I know it's just because he's really stressed out and busy right now and it's all spilling out on me at the moment. Everything makes him fly off the handle right now.

Luckily come Friday he'll get to unwind and he'll be back to his normal self again.

My niece - 21 - wants to work for NASA. In high school, she spent her summers at a girl's space program at NASA. Her major is engineering. She's in Russia now, spending a couple of semesters learning the language.

Just one example but most of the "kids these days" I know fall squarely in to this "self serving" camp -- working hard to fit in to a much different work landscape than I faced.

Bravo to you and your niece. The only free stuff any of my nieces or nephews ever cared about came from a fictitious fat guy in a red suit. What a commie, eh?

Not being a jackass. Or trying to be one either. I actually thought I was adding to the conversation...

Nevermind.

RIP Gene Cernan.

I'm not that young anymore but I can't stand the generalizations of younger people these days.

Must say, as a mom of a 14 year old, that kids and youngsters, and young adults are viewing the world a lot differently, because of the times they are growing up in, growing up has changed, attitudes has changed.INFORMATION has changed!
BUT, I, as a mom, raised her with the attitude that nothing comes for free, only the sunrise and sunset. ( and weather..) if she wants to make something of her life, she needs to put effort in it, and always TRY her best. I raised her with the knowledge, that I-phones are expensive, and if she wants one, she needs to get herself a job.
I raised her with the knowledge, that communication ( face-to-face) is still very important. ( I can go on for hours like this, I will not.;) )

We can complain about the "young generation" or team up with them and guide them.

*My kid doesn't need the newest phone or the most expensive clothes, cause she realize what it's worth.
*She is following kickboks-training 3 times ( !) a week, because she LEARNED that nobody got on top by sitting on the couch all day. and she wants to fight competitions, so work hard, work harder!.
*She knows how to speak to people older then her, and that I WILL punish her if she is disrespectful to elders..

Just a few examples out of my crazy life. Lets give kids these days the benefit of the doubt, and guide them, instead of burn them:rose:

I think you people, like lord of us, are sensitive to the atmosphere around them. Think low of them and they will react defensively. Expect of them and they will rise to the challenge.

Aren't we all prone to this at times what ever our age?

Your daughter sounds as I would hope from 'meeting' her mother x

exactly, that!.

And thank You Elle.. you made me blush!

*She knows how to speak to people older then her, and that I WILL punish her if she is disrespectful to elders..
Had me up until there...
Sorry to bring in a harsh attitude but I couldn't just leave that alone, dogma doesn't square with me. That's B.S. of the highest order.
So training your kid to hold a belief that 'elders' are somehow inherently worthy of potentially entirely undeserved respect for the meaningless reason that they were born before her is a useful life skill? As opposed to approaching everybody with equal treatment and consideration? And then you punish her if she doesn't follow that guideline?!

That sounds a lot like unreasonable forced-admiration that I'd expect more from the faceless pseudo-doms lurking around here.
