and hey, you guys, Pat Robertson is one of the sanest Christian conservatives these days**; you should be worried about Bob Jones Jr. (is he still around?), the 'Family Research Council', etc.

there's gonna be some great parties in Texas and the white stuff will be flowing like talcum powder.

ADDED: Change that to 'was'. PR has just endorsed GWB as the lesser of evils. (Perhaps he expects Bush to win, and would like NOT to be consigned to outer darkness.)

Ol' Pat has ALWAYS been the sanest, Pure, that's why I've always conidered him the most dangerous. He uses all the rest. He lost a lot of power when Jesse Helms retired and remember that he ran against Bush 41 in 1988. So even though the Bush's don't like him, he has managed to maintain much of his clout.

Ps-Enjoyed the Bush ad.

Perhaps what Luc is calling "elation" is really Despair Lite.

If I still held out hope, I'd be right there with him on the cheerleading squad for Despair Lite. (What amusing bumper stickers! Defeat Despair. Elect Despair Lite in 2004.)

Personally, I think Despair Lite is too much to hope for. I have a sense of foreboding so black I can almost smell the smoke. It can't entirely be accounted for by the fact that we're about to return a man to the one job of his adult life at which he's been a total failure, and not just a failure. (His failures in private business can't be considered total failures, no matter what the stockholders might think. Those jobs made him rich, and as far as I know there were no fatalites.)

Sure, it's a scary and depressing inevitabiity, but the irony is so rich, I can't fail to appreciate it. I mean, how often does a country rally around leaders who accidentally invaded the wrong country!

:D

See? Bush alone can't acount for my cloud of despair. It's bigger than he is.

Maybe its Justice Rehnquist's illness. And the realization that Bush/Cheney may get to nominate his replacement, win or lose.

They'll get the solid majority they need on the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade, strip us of the inalienable right to defend ourselves in court - and those are just the short-term possibilities. With a majority of the court bent on doing their Christian duty, who knows what fun we might have in coming years?

Every scowling, purse-lipped, woman-fearing, homophobic Ashcroft-clone with a Bible and a law degree will be contriving cases to test the godliness of our laws. We'll be halfway to a theocracy, faster than you can be prosecuted for writing pornography.

That's despair.

My elation is based on one thing, the slim nonexistant hope that politics will never again exploit the fact that people are that stupid. Bush has set a precedent in which he has lied himself out of every conceivable wrongdoing from voter fraud, illegal wars, aiding friends and families of terrorists, committing low treason, etc... If we re-elect him, politics goes from theatre to Holy Fucking Shit! From now on truth will be unneccesary, justifications a post exercise. While it is true that all politicians have exploited this and Reagan and Clinton have paved the way for Bush in minor ways, it still remains apparent that it no longer matters who is on the ballot or what they do, we are psychically linked to the two-choice lie. A victory for Kerry will shatter that perception and possibly force the regular type of theatre honesty into the system much like what happened after Watergate. It's a vain hope and will be crushed like a beer can on a moron's head, but I cling to it as my one chance for elation in the miasma of nihilism that is politics.

The world shall prove me wrong however and already is. I guess it is Despair Lite after all. Pass the scotch, I'm getting blotto.

Impressive, Impressive. This is as clear a testament to the power of the Republican spin machine as any I've seen. As I've always said, I see no dishonor in avoiding military service until the element of hypocrisy is added. The party of Did Not Serve has become so closely identified with being Pro-Military that most Americans think Ronald Reagan was a veteran of combat.

Since 9/11, we've been witnessing one of the GOP's all-time most effective spins. Or maybe it's more like a moon-walk:

If there is an objective measure of how effective a president has been against terrorism, it's the magnitude of terrorist attacks that occurred on his watch. A quick tally reveals that George W. Bush allowed more than 3000 Americans to be killed by terrorists, which is roughly 2,750 more than all other presidents combined. We have no evidence of any terrorist actions that have been stopped by his administration, and we've seen an expanded number of terrorist incidents and pro-terrorist sentiment since he tried his solution in the middle east.
Yet somehow, he's become so closely identified with protecting us from terrorism that there are voters who say that's the only reason they're voting for him.

How did that happen? Is it really as simple as Karl Rove believes? That if you say something often enough, it becomes true?

Unfortunately, yes.

Perception often is reality.
