To be honest, I'm too lazy and too drugged to bother looking it up, but can you lovely people please find everything you can about the two kinds of infection?

Any of you had them?

I was rushed to emerg. last night cus I had debilitating pain in my back, which we now believe is a kidney infection, but I've also got serious pain in my ovaries, and my white blood cell count is way up, and I've had a fever for two days now, etc.

I'm scheduled for an ultrasound of my kidneys and abdomen this week, but.. any info in the meantime would help.

Thanks much.

I sympathize completely. I had serious, serious kidney infections when I was in my 20's that led to major surgery to remove the scarring that had built up. The pain I experienced was the worst I've ever felt, even worse than labor pains.

If you have a kidney infection, you will get a fever, sometimes pretty high. And if I remember right, I also had pain in my lower abdomen. These things can make you pretty sick.

If you are on antibiotics, take them correctly, and take them ALL. And drink lots of water. Some people swear by cranberry juice, but water is the important thing.

I hope you feel better. :rose:

I AM on antibiotics (VERY strong ones that make me puke, but I've been able to hold off long enough for the drug to kick in, before I start puking), and I will take them all.. I can feel that they are working, though, as the pain is less than it was..

I'm doing the water thing, in a big way, though again, THAT makes me puke.. and I'm doing a VERY strong regimen of no-additive pure cranberry juice, chased by water.

And painkillers.. anti-inflamatories. The pain is debilitating, and I am supposed to go back to work on Thursday, after a 9 week sick leave for my back, so I can't cancel now. I have to stick it through.

You didn't say when your ultrasound is scheduled, but if you are vomiting after most doses of your medications, I'd give your doc a call, especially if you are still running a fever. It is not unusual at all for people with bad kidney infections to need to be hospitalized for IV antibiotics, so if you aren't keeping the meds down you might need to go in. Also, they should have sent some urine for a culture to see what bacteria is causing the infection. It usually takes 24 hours to grow and identify the bacteria, so you should call anyway just to make sure that you are on the right antibiotic.
If there is any chance you could have an STD, make sure they did a pelvic--an STD would be treated with different antibiotics, and again, you need to know you are being treated for the right thing.

Hope you get feeling better soon.

I've had kidney infections before, and they were accompanied by serious pain and high fevers. The pain was usually mid-way up my back, on the side of the infected kidney.

fille, the pain that I have is right above the small of my back (which in my case is odd, cus I have scoliosis, and a higher small of my back than most), and it's only on one side. Sometimes, if I just lay still, and take anti-inflammatories, the pain goes away for like, 6 or 7 hours at a time.. other times, it just feels like a knife is buried there. The swelling over the kidney HAS gone down, and my fever FINALLY broke last night.

My ultra-sound was yesterday, and the tech said that while HE didn't see anything to concern him, he's not a doc, and I should really wait for my doctor's analysis.

As for STDs.. my honey and I have been faithful to each other for three years. If I've got an STD, I can't imagine how I got it... and neither can he. The medication that I AM on, though, IS an antibiotic for STDs (even though the different cultures the doc did have revealed none), and I was put on them to fight whatever infection I had, and the strength of them he figured, would be enough to combat whatever I've got, STD or no.

I go today to my doc to talk more about my kidneys, and about work... I'm hoping for a less bed-ridden day today, as I'm supposed to start work tomorrow, after 9 weeks away, and it would be disastrous to do so when feeling horribly ill, or to cancel my shift due to illness. I think my employer would look down on that. On the other hand, if my doc tells me to stay home, I'm staying home, because in the end, if you haven't your health, you've got nothing.

Have they checked your sed rate?

It's not a kidney problem, it's definitely in my reproductive system.. infection in my uterus, left ovary, and possibly bladder as well. I'm on a cocktail of antibiotics, plus gravol, plus some other thing that's supposed to combat nausea...

my doc basically said it'll get much worse before it gets better.
