Looking for a good deed to do? Part 2

I got here via your link in VS's thread...thank you so much for posting this, Cloudy. :rose:

I had no idea, and feel terribly ignorant. My personal plan is to pass the Friends of Pine Ridge link and statistics on to friends and family, and send whatever we can from now on. I see their big request right now is for Christmas gifts for kids and elders, and I can't think of a much better way to spend my birthday and Christmas money. :)

We have a very small christmas here, so this is what I do with christmas bonuses, etc. It makes my christmas to know that I've helped make someone else's.

Thank you. :rose:

Thank you, Og.

Five blankets boxed up, and on their way this morning, and I've started another batch. Every little bit helps.

Hi Cloudy,

Is there any way us folks in England can lend a hand?

Chris. :rose:

Of course!

(this is me, by the way)

Just go to the link in my first post, and there are lists of organizations, and what they need, from books for libraries, blankets and clothing for the women's shelter and rehab centers, to just plain ol' money for propane for heat this winter.

Og may hate me for publicizing this, but he donated his winnings in the Free Speech contest towards books for their "wish list." You can order the books they want from Amazon, and have them shipped to Pine Ridge directly.

Right now, I think the most pressing issues are Christmas gifts for the children and elderly, and money for heating. But help in whatever way you can - it's always appreciated.

Thank you.

Hello 'me by the way',

That's a thought. Suppose I can buy stuff on e-bay as well as Amazon, get them sent direct rather than posted from the UK.

Nothing surprises me about the mighty Og

A little encouragement...

Cloudy, your efforts to spread the word are definitely working. :) I just got this back from my mom in response to the email I sent using much of your first post (it was so well written, and I didn't think you'd mind):

RE: Pine Ridge Reservation Help
Erika..I got this information out to the student council today and they are going to contribute to pine ridge as our holiday project! I also sent the info to my gym group..I'll get on that when I see them next!

So, a school and another group with big hearts and plenty of resources to give. I didn't have the chance yet, but I'll be Christmas shopping for the PR kids this week, and keep passing it on.

You've made my month, honestly. :) And, of course I don't mind.

Got this email this morning from the Leonard Peltier Defense Committee (he heads a gift drive every year for the children of Pine Ridge):

Dear friends,

The Lakota People have four values to live by: bravery, wisdom, generosity, and fortitude. Generosity (Wacantognaka) is essential to a Lakota. It is better to give a lot than to have a lot. The best way to honor people is through giveaways (otuhan) where the givers share much of what they have with others, sometimes giving away everything in their possession.

Leonard Peltier offers all his supporters an opportunity to give something back and honor the Lakota people. He respectfully requests your help making these holidays a little brighter and this winter a little warmer for the children at the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.

Please send toys, coats, socks, shoes, clothing, new and used in good condition to:

Leonard Peltier Holiday Gift Drive

Bump for a wonderful cause. I just wanted to mention that with so much on sale right now, we can do a whole lot with very little to bring the kids of PR some joy at Christmas this year. I didn't realize it before, but the gifts will go to kids who are victims of crimes (many sexual) first. As you can see HERE , they still need A LOT of gifts, and just about anything will do. Everything I've bought so far was under $4, including coloring and fun educational workbooks, crayons, kids' turtlenecks, games like Candyland. I also have a bunch of stuff like extra new "gift with purchase" cosmetics, lotions, bath items, and bags/pouches hanging around, which will work for the older girls (they desperately need gifts for the 11-18 range).

I'm asking family and friends to buy and send, or give me, one inexpensive item, and if we all do similar, every kid will have something to open on Christmas. :)

Under their Urgent Needs:

VAIC Christmas Gifts for Children (and A Special Need for Teen Girl Gifts)

12/02/05

Our current Christmas donation drive is for gifts for the young crime victims that are being counseled by Victims Assistance in Indian Country (VAIC).
Sadly, there are approximately 380 children who have become victims of crime this year, the majority of whom are victims of sexual assault, and we need your help sending them each a Christmas gift.

Feel free to either shop for and ship your gifts yourself, or purchase gifts online and have them shipped directly to VAIC. If you send a wrapped gift, please attach a note to it, specifying for which age and sex the gift is appropriate. Please send new gifts of toys, sports equipment and games for the children, rather than clothing, but scarves, hats and gloves are very welcome. Please check our “Projects” section for gift ideas for children. VAIC can also use your donations of gift wrapping supplies.
So we can keep track for VAIC, please contact us to let us know if you are sending a gift for a boy or a girl and for which age group. If there are excess gifts donated in any category VAIC will distribute them to the siblings of these children.

Thank you so much for supporting these children. Your generosity will help make a difference for them on Christmas!

We are seeking gifts for:
Ages 0-3, 10 kids (5 girls, 5 boys)
Ages 4-6, 20 kids (10 girls, 10 boys)
Ages 7-10, 30 kids (15 girls, 15 boys)
Ages 11-14, 160 kids (80 girls, 80 boys)
Ages 15-18, 160 kids (all girls)

Gifts donated:
Ages 0-3: 29 gifts, (14 for girls/15 for boys)

I can't go shopping myself being stuck in the hospital but I'll ask my brother to. I'm sure he'll want to help.

Very cool. I hope you feel/heal better soon! :rose:

I'm packaging everything up this weekend, and sending it Monday. I ended up finding quite a few things around the house even, like a cute blue and black messenger bag my mom found at school, but I don't need. It's VERY gently used, and perhaps will make a nice gift for one of the older girls.

They said wrapping supplies might be a problem, so I'm taking pics of everything, wrapping and numbering them. Then I'll email and include a numbered packing list with small pics and descriptions, and maybe some gift tags, ribbons, tape, etc., in case they need it for the other gifts.

I wrote to the email on the site to let them know what's coming, and got a very nice, grateful reply from the woman who's coordinating all of this.
