Hey ya'll, I just finished watching the news...it appears your new Republican governor has decided to cut Education funds for some of the programs out of his budget. Says thats the only way he can balance the budget. Sounds a little like he is pouting to me..says had his slot machine bill passed, these cuts wouldn't have been necessary...
Makes me wonder where his kids go to school.

What is with these lawmakers that think they can keep cutting money from education. Next time that you have have to deal with the kid at McDonalds that can't make change or as an employer trying to hire a teenager that can't fill out a job application...think how important education is to our kids and our future...

Good morning everyone.......Fiesty I never did think slotmachines would be our savior....Those of us who remember when the lottery first came in ALL[/]the money was supposed to go to education--that lasted until the next session and PooF, all the monies wound up in the general fund. hmmmm. I was going to rant some more (maybe the weather has me in a foul mood) but I'll let it go.

Good morning all! I'm new to Lit and Princess4u was kind enough to invite me to the Maryland thread since I'm located on the Eastern Shore of MD. My name's Jason and I've been reading stories at Lit for over a year now but just got into posting a little over a month ago. Anybody else from my side of the Bay?

How's this weather, huh? I've about had enough of cold rain! If it must rain I'd rather have warm summer drops cascading down my neck than the icy ones outside now.

Don't get ME started on my soapbox...I have a number of friends who are teachers in Montgomery County schools, and the stories they've already told me about how the budget situation are atrocious--new teachers being summoned to the principal's office over the intercom and then told to leave school at the end of the day and not come back, 'cuz they've been laid off...it's a real mess!

And to top it off, a big topic at the conference I was at was how to ensure that the U.S. maintained a robust domestic science and engineering talent pool to maintain our economic competitiveness...so far, we've been relying on talented people from overseas coming here to study and then staying. Not a sustainable strategy, to say the least.

From my brother's experience, don't go to California! He's now an ex-school system employee...things that happen when your state has a $2 BILLION DEFICIT!!! Woohoo!

You have really said it all with that comment about the weather....I am SO READY for summer, I almost miss the humidity (almost, that is! ). Hope you get over to this side of the Bay sometime when we have a Lit-together--but glad you joined this Forum. It can be addictive! (Witness the fact that I'm SUPPOSED to be working right now...)

Howdy-ho to all my neighbors out there...yet another chilly and unpleasant day so far...I've totally lost the psychological lift I got from being outside yesterday afternoon!

No choice but to cut the System of MD budget when it provides jobs for state residents? It brings in grant money and educates, but you'd rather not cut pork? Don't understand it at all - I suppose since universities don't fund campaigns they don't have a loud voice, but this sucks.

I never wish ill of anyone, but if someone's to be laid off, at least let it be a subset of those that voted for the man...and I use that term loosely...

Morning Roman, Dave, We have a very similar thing here in IL.........constantly cut the education funds.....especiall when a school thinks they have a 8 mill def. but then turns out to be really 24 omg.....and they had refferendum up at the same time......needless to say it didnt pass. There have been stupid kids working at McDonald's long before my governor took office. He only has one kid and he looks like he's five or six. Maybe the governor is cutting out out all the outlandish programs that were implemented when there was a huge budget surplus during the booming 90s? Maryland is a true tax-and-spend state, where your taxes aren't used just for what's needed and you get the rest back, rather, whatever is collected will all be spent. I find that irresponsible and criminal. Next! (Climbing off the Crabby Soapbox)
