People are free to say any idiotic thing they like, but they must allow me, and others like me to relay the facts, and to not get upset when I do so (e.g., Dixie Chicks). Also, education did not suddenly go downhill when Gov. Ehrlich was inaugurated. The last Republican governor was in office more than 36 years ago. So crappy education has been the legacy of democrats. And, surprise, surprise, they've been looting our paychecks to improve things and it's not working. So what's the real solution? It's certainly not more money.

So surely it's cut education? Yup, that's the best way to improve it. I might point out that during those non-Repub years, our state universities have risen to nation prominence. Now all that work may be undercut by someone needing to cut where it's easiest for him, but not necessarily best for the state.
I did not say that it's easy cutting the budget, or even that education should be spared, but I do think it's unfair for education, and especially higher ed, to shoulder the vast majority of the cuts.

They should cut where it's best for the state, but not for them......their salaries! The avg. state gov't employee makes 50k a year. That's average! Alot make more than that for the paltry paper-pushing that they do. But are they going to cut there? Of course not! They'll cut education cause none of them ever did well in school and look where they made it to. So let's cut it out from under the kids and the educators cause they don't really matter anyway. I mean kids can't even vote.

Ehhh, Erlich was pretty clear about his agenda when he was running--god knows I didn't vote for him, but at least he's trying to deliver on what he promised. Too bad for him that he's a terrible politician, too. In any case, any budget he proposes still has to go through the MD legislature--which is as screwed up a political organization as I've ever seen!
Politics is so much fun to watch! But as someone said, there are tears behind all that laugher...

I'm sure there are other items getting cut also, and not just education. Everyone is going to feel the pinch. Yes, I'm sure Ehrlich was admitted to Princeton basd on his Affirmative Action score and was passed from year-to-year whether he learned anything or not. And now he's the governor! And what does children not voting have to do with anything? It's their parents that should be looking out for their best interests instead of wasting their time amusing themselves night after night. Free education is just a tool available to all. It's up to the parents to make sure that their kids are learning what they're supposed to, and to take action when there's a problem. The blame for the state of education is more a parental failing than it is a lack of money.

Waverlysgirl, when I mentioned the childred not being able to vote I was making that statement from the legislators point of view and attempting to be comical. From the legislator's view public school children can't vote so they aren't important and can't complain about their school funding being cut. Most of the legislator's kids go to private schools anyway.

Washington, DC Wants to Play!
A couple of members of this board noticed a long posting I put up a week or so ago and referred me to this site. In the posting, I was wondering if any folks in and around DC would care to get together for a sexual free-fire-zone party, where we can all do the things we read and write about. My thought was a sort of expanded Jack and Jill party, with folks free to do what they wished, and with any consenting person who cared to join in. My inspiration was the old Plato's Retreat parties in long-ago New York, a club on the Upper West Side where 300 to 400 nude people would mill around during a weekend evening, lounging on pool side chaises, bobbing in and out of a Jacuzzi, and at some time or another going into the aptly named Ball Room to fuck under strobe lights to the thump-thump of music. The sights and sounds of 50 or so couples fucking at once, side by side, stir my memory to this day.
Anyway, anyone who is interested can run down the posting by going to my profile and then checking out my postings. If nothing else, I think it would be fun to sit around in the nude and chat about sex and just see what develops.
As to making sure that no unwanted attentions are forced on anyone, male or female, I think back to swing parties that I used to attend out in Northern Virginia. The host couple always made sure that one big mean son of a bitch was present as a bouncer if needed. His very existence kept everyone in line.

yes, but their parents vote so it would be silly to diss the kids when their parents are the ones that put them into office. But most adults can figure out that cuts need to be made, rather than raising taxes. I'm sure that if enough people are angry about education being cut, they'll let their legislators know, rather than arguing about it in cyberspace. BTW, FeistyRed, Roman, BethAnne and all the rest, what should we be cutting instead of education? Oh and, welcome to the Maryland thread
