Midnight's Record Shop

My brother owned a record store in the mid-70's. I worked there to help him out (naturally, no PAY, but I DID get one album and a hamburger for helping out). he also managed a band (that did not make it), so I learned a bit about how record got made back then, as well as a small bit about the business side of getting air time on radio - so I had some different ideas about music than my friends did.

The bands that I gravitated towards were those where real musical talent was demonstrated, or were not what others even knew about - at least at the time.

Jo Jo Gunn (not well known), UFO (Michael Schenker - the MAN), and naturally Peter Frampton - who NEVER seemed to miss hit any note. You RARELY heard any squeal from the strings from fingers sliding incidentally when he played - he was technically almost perfect that way.

I HATED some bands because they started using computers to duplicate drums for consistency - made recording sessions easily and quicker, but also you lost the live feel. There were some bands that NEVER had actual drums playing in their songs. You could always tell by the top hat hits....if there were no miss-hits ever, it was a computer playing drums.

I saw Peter Frampton in concert as my first. I saw Yes (my favorite band of all time) as well. I JUST saw Yes as they started their world tour a few weeks ago (without Jon Anderson - the group had a nasty falling out and he left them).

Peter Frampton!!! So much! Loved him

First album I bought was the Beach Boys(had a thing for the surfer dude), first concert took awhile it was Jim Croce. Mostly I get stuck in the 60's.

I'm a product of the Monkees era. I still like some of their songs. I know.
I think I was even in the Davy Jones fan club.

Geez, after reading Midnight's post above this, I sound like a wimp!

Don't forget the Byrds, Turtles, Gary Lewis and the Playboys. Anyone remember Dino, Desi & Billy?

What to speak, The Archies, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis....the list is endless.

Yep, 60's, 70's, 50's.....

My first album was Abbey Road, a Christmas gift from my parents. The first concert I saw was Jethro Tull. Tull's opening act was the Eagles. The Eagles had just released Take It Easy. The concert was in 1972 in Oklahoma City, I was 15.

1977. Lynyrd Skynyrd had just released Street Survivors and was to play in Hollywood Fla. I couldn't attend. Had to work or something. I thought "No problem, I'll catch them in Georgia" Couldn't make that either, Then they crashed. I cried.

Saw them live in the 70's...amazing band

I was always a huge fan of Pink Floyd and Joe Walsh. Their albums probably mean more to me than any others.

Currently its Elbow and Anna Calvi.

Saw a lot of live bands in the 70s...in those days they played smaller theatres rather than 6 nights in London - I saw Santana, Wings, Genesis, Elton John, ELO, Emerson lake and Palmer, all in a small hall in my home town...happy days!

I had tickets to Elvis' Memphis concert in 1977. He died a couple of months before the concert.

This week marks the anniversary of his death. My parents saw his last performance at the Coliseum. I remember them going out that evening and wanting to go with them so badly.

I travel down Elvis Presley Boulevard past the mansion Monday thru Friday and I can tell the traffic, especially the foot traffic is really starting to pick-up due to Elvis Week.

First album was a birthday gift from an older brother. A green cassette... Elton John's Greatest Hits. I think it was December 1975. I played it until it wore out.

First concert.... John Denver. I was and always will be a John Denver geek.

First album Donny Osmond (my mom bought it for Christmas).

First live rock was at a school dance. Heart. They were living in Vancouver and recording there first album and they were doing high school dances. Many bands did this while I was I high school.

First real concert was Fleetwood Mac.

The most memorable ( probably because I wasn't stoned ) concert I saw was the Rolling Stones. It was in Dallas, 1989, the Steel Wheels tour. It was a beautiful evening at the Cotton Bowl. The Stones played some of their greatest songs, Gimme Shelter, Midnight Rambler, Sympathy for the Devil and lots more. A fantastic show. I still have the T- shirt.

I bet. I'm familiar with the area. I visited the Krispy Kreme not too long ago. Damn those things are good.

I may be back over Labor Day. I was just checking Ticketmaster to see if anyone was in town. Didn't check Beale St or Tunica though.

Merle Haggard is coming to Tunica soon but I can't remember when. The next time you're in town try the Sunday brunch at Boscos on Madison. A local, Joyce Cobb plays there during brunch. She used to be on Beale years ago.
