Moral Conundrums

#11 You are a psychiatrist and your patient has just confided to you that he intends to kill a woman. You're inclined to dismiss the threat as idle, but you aren't sure. Should you report the threat to the police and the woman or should you remain silent as the principle of confidentiality between psychiatrist and patient demands? Should there be a law that compels you to report such threats?

The law does compel you to report such threats and to detain the person in hospital-at least it does here-confidentiality only goes so far-it's a finite right as far as Mental health services are concerned

#12 Your worst enemy is being sentenced to death and you are the only person who can clear their name. Do you come forward to save their life, or do you let them die because of all the pain and misery they caused you?

#12 Your worst enemy is being sentenced to death and you are the only person who can clear their name. Do you come forward to save their life, or do you let them die because of all the pain and misery they caused you?

Just because someone is my worst enemy doesn't mean they don't have worth to others, even if not to me. I don't care if someone is my worst enemy or not, I will always give someone credit where it's due, never denying the good points of someone even if the rest of them pisses me off to no end. Therefore, I would clear even my worst enemy from an unjust, wrongful charge or accusation. I support justice being served.

If you were at the scene of an accident while it was taking place and there were three people that you knew would die, but you had to power to save one who would you save?

Here are the people: A pregnant woman. Your mother. Your one true love. Why them over the others?

I changed my mind. I hate you :D

True love.

Mother has had a long life and the pregnant woman (presumably) isn't known to me.

Posting the question as is, without adding the details of who those saved might be etc. . .I would answer no, a completly unqualified no.

The justification and rationalization for taking a life to save another--whether one or 100 is indefensable.

On the surface, it might seem to be an easy answer, however how many of those who answer yes have ever taken a life. The justification of "saving other lives" has been used for nearly every genocide, every heinous crime ever comitted on a large scale. The preservation of a culture, way of life and the future lives of 'our children and our race' was Hitlers justification for the holocaust.

The position of arbitrary judge of life and death is far too complex to leave in the hands of human beings which can only barely adhere to the threads of a moral code.

In the moment, would I kill to protect my child? OF COURSE! However, I am not fit to be a parent to my child if I would commit mass murder--even if I justified it to be to his benefit.

The simplicity of the question belies the complexity of the answer--personally I am willing to give the right to decide death for others only to one capable of giving life as well. Show me the person who can create life from nothing (this is not procreation) and I will accept that person as capable of choosing when others die.

Clowns, if you've put up a new question, link to in the OP, will you?
Unlike RB here, I can't answer with an absolute "NO". The scenario is hypothetical, and, you've left it very vague, so, for all of the above the most I can say is "maybe"? The nice thing to say is "NO! NEVER!" But, other than being the nice thing to say, it might well prove a lie should the situation arise, and I'd like to avoid lying (unless it concerns my girlfriends who've yet to learn about one another. :D)

Of course, the question then boils down to relativity (not the physics one). Is 100 enough? What about 1000? One million? One billion? All 6 or 7 billion?

Besides, to really ponder death and killing, not as an abstract, but as a concrete act one faces...is far too complex to answer in this one thread, interesting though the question is.

Link to it in the OP? No clue what you speak of since I know nothing about posting policies other then to chicken peck my way through rate this avatar threads. So I will just continue to post the questions like I am doing although i appreciate the advice.

Also I am not expecting a thesis type of an answer. The questions are meant to be thought provoking is all. They are vague open ended questions because that is how I choose them to be. This allows the reader of the question to interpret that question in however they see fit. I just find it interesting what people's thoughts are. Not to judge them, or grade them on their answers, but to give them something else to do besides rank the best litsters in the playground is all.

Now I see you and RB's point, but I also find it intersting that certain posters will answer certain questions while other posters skip some they may not feel comfortable answering. To each their own actually. I just do it for shits and giggle after all this is The Playground not Philosophy 101 :)

No offense to all posters, but, I don't always read 180 some posts (all of them equally excellent though they are), hence, updating the first post to include additional new questions, or, the question of the day, seems easier (for me). Of course, I'm asking you to do the work, so...

Philosophy is a way of life, as much as it is a subject of study in college...that lands you working at McD's afterwards. :D So, I don't readily dismiss the fun just 'cause I don't have a notebook and a reading list out. :)

I would probably say my true love.................but I would need therapy to deal with all the guilt I would feel afterwards............................that's a tough question.

I get your point but as you said I have to do all of the work and although I dont expect you or any other poster to peruse 180 posts I do expect if you come on here to take it all with a grain of salt for what this place actually is. An erotic website where people of all walks of life come to bullshit and have fun. To see old friends and make new ones and to read what some people post whether they respond to it or not.

What I don't like is posters who feel compelled to throw their two cents in whenever they feel it is necessary. Posters who are pushy and arrogant. Posters who are not what they say they are. Posters who judge but cannot be judged themselves. Posters who can dish it but not take it.

Now I am certainly not saying you are this poster, but bottomline is these type of posters are what is causing a lot of the type of posters I like to leave and leave quickly.

I'd save my one true love. My mother would want me to. The pregnant woman's true love can deal with her - I'm not going to sacrifice my people for strangers.

I'd save the quarterpounder with cheese & medium fries, but not of course until AFTER I've finshed working my arse off for my Philosophy BA & am therefore qualified to do so

:D

#14. Your best friend confides in you that he committed a crime the other day. After telling you he makes you promise not to tell anyone else. While watching the news a few days later, you see the police have arrested an innocent man for the crime your friend confessed to yo he did. After pleading with him to turn himself in he defiantly says no and reminds you of the promise you made. What do you do? When is it ok to break a promise?

If it was a serious crime, I don't think I could make that original promise. If one of my friends did something seriously wrong it would be a serious mistake or accident and I should be able to convince them to come forward.

If I did promise, then once he refused to turn himself in again, I would tell him then he would be leaving me with no choice but to turn him in.

#5 (Page 7)You are shopping and notice a woman stuffing a pair of stockings into her purse. Do you report her? Why or why not? PROBABLY NOT. SMALL THEFT, AND NOT WORTH THE HASSLE.

IT'S HER LIFE. WHO AM I TO JUDGE A PERSON'S PERSONAL CHOICES.

#11 (Page 9) You are a psychiatrist and your patient has just confided to you that he intends to kill a woman. You're inclined to dismiss the threat as idle, but you aren't sure. Should you report the threat to the police and the woman or should you remain silent as the principle of confidentiality between psychiatrist and patient demands? Should there be a law that compels you to report such threats? I BELIEVE THERE ACTUALLY ALREADY IS A LAW THAT COMPELS A PERSON TO REPORT SUCH A THING. I WOULD DO IT, ANYWAY.

NOT MY MOTHER. SHE'S OVER SEVENTY, AND HAS HAD A FULL AND INTERESTING LIFE. PROBABLY THE ONE TRUE LOVE. NOT SURE. .... TRIAGE

Some Fun. Thanks

#2 (Page 4)Developers want to buy your home and demolish it in order to build a research center in which animal experiments will be conducted. They offer you double the market value, would you sell? In a heartbeat

#4 (Page 6) You discover you will die in exactly five years time but if you win a coin toss you can live for another thirty years. If you lose you will die in one months time. Would you take the gamble? Tough one, this. I'd roll the dice, er, flip the coin.

#5 (Page 7)You are shopping and notice a woman stuffing a pair of stockings into her purse. Do you report her? Why or why not? Stockings? Nah. Where's store security?

#6. (Page 7) You find out your partner is having an affair. Would you be any more or less upset if you found out they were having an affair with someone of the same sex? Equally upset, gender doesn't mitigate infidelity

#7 (Page 7) Which would you prefer, to be 100% emotionally content or 100% financially content for the rest of your life? Why? I'll take the cash, thanks.

#8 (Page 8) Imagine you are placed in a room with Adolf Hitler when he is only 3 years old. You have a gun, know exactly what he does during WWII and will not be charged in any way if you choose to kill him, but at the time he is just an innocent baby, could you pull the trigger? No. I know this contradicts #1 in a way, but I assume the person in that conundrum is an adult, not a child

What do you think of it and could you ever envision yourself doing the same? Pure silliness, frankly. And I can't imagine a woman wanting to pay for a man's virginity. First time guys don't tend to last....

Legally, if I believe there is an imminent threat, yes, I'd make the call. In NY, that's on the statutes.

#12 (Page 9) Your worst enemy is being sentenced to death and you are the only person who can clear their name. Do you come forward to save their life, or do you let them die because of all the pain and misery they caused you?
Oh, I'd save them. I can't imagine a better vengeance than that. They get to live with the fact that I saved them.

#13 (Page 9) If you were at the scene of an accident while it was taking place and there were three people that you knew would die, but you had to power to save one who would you save?

Here are the people: A pregnant woman. Your mother. Your one true love. Why them over the others? Argh. Being in the medical field, I hate this kind of question. If the pregnant woman were that close to death, it's probable that the fetus has already been deprived of oxygen through the mother's blood loss. I'd have to go with my love, but I'd be up at night for a long time over that one.

A friend wouldn't put you in that position, so I'd drop a dime on him. If he's MY friend, he knows where I stand on that, and would have stepped up.

#1 If you were put in a position to kill one person in order to save the lives of one hundred other people, could you kill?

Yes. But I may just kill myself. It would be hard to do. And whoever is putting me up to this sounds like a game to them.

#2 (Page 4)Developers want to buy your home and demolish it in order to build a research center in which animal experiments will be conducted. They offer you double the market value, would you sell?

Qualified applicant. I've hired friends before. It almost never works out.

#4 (Page 6) You discover you will die in exactly five years time but if you win a coin toss you can live for another thirty years. If you lose you will die in one months time. Would you take the gamble?

I'd flip the coin. And I'd try to cheat.

No. Unless I own the store I happen to be shopping in.

I'll take emotionally content, Alex.

See question 1.

I don't know. Is my mom one of those millions of people?

The law dictates that I do.

If you were at the scene of an accident while it was taking place and there were three people that you knew would die, but you had to power to save one who would you save?

Here are the people: A pregnant woman. Your mother. Your one true love. Why them over the others?

to me this is dependent on age if I am 60+ arbitrary number then I would save the pregnant woman. under that it would be my wife.

#1 If you were put in a position to kill one person in order to save the lives of one hundred other people, could you kill?

There's too many variables. Who are the people I would be saving? Who would I have to kill?

100 kids for the life of 1 child abuser? Absolutely. Without remorse.

#2 (Page 4)Developers want to buy your home and demolish it in order to build a research center in which animal experiments will be conducted. They offer you double the market value, would you sell?

No.

#3 (Page 6) You have the repsponsibility to fill a position within your company. A friend has applied for the position and is qualified for the job. Another applicant has applied and is a lot more qualified with many more years of experience doing the job you need filled. Both go through the processes and in the end you have to make the tough decision. Do you go with your friend who is much less qualified or the applicant that is more qualified and requires a lot less training to get started?

I would never hire a friend to work under me. Conflict of interest.

#4 (Page 6) You discover you will die in exactly five years time but if you win a coin toss you can live for another thirty years. If you lose you will die in one months time. Would you take the gamble?

I have two young children - as horrible as it would be to know I wouldn't see them fully grown, I would take the sure thing of 5 years and do everything I could to ensure their futures were secure and that they knew how much they were loved what a treasure and blessing it has been to be their mother.

#5 (Page 7)You are shopping and notice a woman stuffing a pair of stockings into her purse. Do you report her? Why or why not?

Situation dependent.

#6. (Page 7) You find out your partner is having an affair. Would you be any more or less upset if you found out they were having an affair with someone of the same sex?

No difference. Cheating is cheating, but I would be more angered if he lied when confronted.
