Update.

WHat she has is called LAM. There is exactly one research center for it in the US. It is fatal. She's in end stages.

This means my mom's probably going to move up to Pennsylvania in the next couple months. My aunt was the one who took care of my grandparents- both are still independent, but they do need someone to help with a lot of things like home repairs and driving to doctor's appointments and such.

I don't know what to feel right now- I'm numb, and waiting on more news.

Well, I haven't gotten the worst phone call yet- just a countdown call.

My mother, other aunt, sister and I have to go and get scanned- this is, as far as they know, genetic in origin. Pregnancy and menopause- hormone changes on massive scale, seem to trigger more cycles of the disease.

My mother has almost all of the preliminary symptoms listed on the site. Thankfully, I have no girls and my sister is anti-children- if my mother tests out for it, and then either I or my sister does, it may end with us.

There are an estimated quarter million cases in the world- how many people are on the planet? They don't know enough about this to do anythign for it- their current stop gap was the equivalent of tacking her lungs to her ribs so that they can't collapse, but they're saying that there are som many cysts (small bundles of muscle cells that don't belong where they are) that she's not going to have much lung function.

It's a waiting game. And unfortunately, it looks like the final score is going to be ugly.

The world population is 6 billion, about half female, so a quarter million is a small percentage, which accounts for the lack of prigress in finding suitable treatment.

Now it looks like he's going to lose another of his children, and my grandmother was having hissy fits because "that lazy man won't get out of bed!" She refuses to accept how bad this disease is, and my other aunt has been downright callous about it- "Oh, well, she brought it on herself by not being godly enough." (That aunt and I don't get along.)

My mother is selling off her furniture and getting her house ready to sell. Anyone looking to relocate to N. Florida, let me know, lol. SO far, so good, I guess.

"Currently there are no effective treatments for LAM. A lung transplant is sometimes an option of last resort (once one becomes dependent on supplemental oxygen), if a matched donor can be found. There is a critical shortage of lungs for transplant. Current estimated survival rates for lung transplants irrespective of underlying disease are up to 80% at 1 year and 60% at 4 years. 7 However, since transplantation does not treat the underlying cause of LAM, and LAM is understood to be metastatic with an origin outside of the lung, LAM is known to recur in the transplanted lungs. Transplant recipients also must take immunosuppressive (anti-rejection) medications indefinitely. These drugs lower immunity to prevent rejection, but also increase the risk of infection and other serious diseases."

It's a great idea- but not likely to happen. Transplant lists are very long, and I'm not sure how long the "end stage" can be. But I'll pass along to my uncle and grandparernts.

An ancient pagan and Jewish concept that if anything bad happens to you it's because YOU DID something wrong in the eyes of gods, godesses, or God. Why does it live on?

Even if it were true, friends and relatives shoud CARE about the afflicted person.
