Officer Moreland took a long slow sip from the dark black coffee before setting the flimsy paper cup back into the cup holder in his cruiser. Each sip tasted like boiled ass, but it did its job, waking him up enough to work the graveyard beat. He wasn't sure why he continued grabbing his coffee from the station rather than one of the hundreds of millions of late night coffee joints within the city. Tradition maybe... or maybe just that he couldn't stand the false chipperness of the hipster baristas. Whatever the reason James kept drinking the bitter piss that came out of the ancient torture mechanism that passed as a coffee brewer in the station.
James hated graveyard shift. It was when all the craziest shit went down, when all the weirdies came out of the woodwork, crack heads, smack heads, meth heads, the angry drunks, the drag queens, the down low homos... And James had to deal with every single fucking one of them. Just thinking about it was enough to give him a bit of a headache. Every day it grew worse and worse. Domestic violence calls, public indecency. It was driving him around the bend. And worse, the darkness was starting to get to him as well. He'd taken a bribe now and then when he was a day walker, what cop didn't on the salary they made after all? But it was different in the dark... Drug busts disappearing before they could make their way to evidence, excessive force used in arrests... even the occasional favor extracted to keep a prostitute out of prison. A small stirring in his pants occurred at that memory.
James Moreland had never been a bright eyed idealistic cop. He came from a family of cops and he knew how the streets were. He hadn't realized just how much they could change a man.
Another long pull off the coffee as he crept down the busy downtown street, the sound of loud techno blaring out of several of the clubs that were beginning to empty out. A lot of dirty and guilty eyes glanced at the approach of the black and white police cruiser and James glowered as he looked into the crowd. Everyone of these people was guilty of something. James knew it and if he had his way he'd just open fire into the crowd, he'd be doing the world a favor.
James pulled over to the side of the curb, opening the door to his cruiser and stepping out, unfolding his large six foot frame. He'd never allowed the cop lifestyle to make him soft, his body was still in the same great shape he'd been in when he graduated from the academy. James wouldn't be caught with donut dust on his uniform. He found he commanded more fear and respect when it was obvious he could physically beat down the person giving him lip.
He moved onto the curb, passing a gaggle of drunk girls, practically falling all over themselves as they moved from one trashy club to another. They'd be lucky if they all made it home without soiling themselves, or possibly having someone else soil them.
He approached a group of African Americans eying him warily and was about to start questioning them about their activities for the evening when something out of the corner of his eye caught his attention. Turning he saw a young lady being dragged forcibly into an alley. His steel grey eyes narrowed as he loosed the weapon in his holster. "Looks like you got lucky this evening..." He said roughly to the group in front of him before taking off at a quick jog towards the alley, people giving way in front of the large cop.
He knew standard procedure was to call in for backup and proceed with caution, but he'd flaunted S.O.P. for so long he didn't even hesitate before plunging into the darkness of the alley ahead of him. His gun was out the instant he saw the young girl on the ground, an obviously inebriated man holding her down, his dick hanging out of his pants as he tried to get the woman's undergarments off.
"SIR! STEP AWAY FROM THE WOMAN AND PUT YOUR HANDS WHERE I CAN SEE THEM!" He shouted, the gun in his hand steady as a rock.
The man didn't seem to hear him, or if he had he was too gone to understand what he was telling him. James couldn't just shoot the man, so it was plan B..
"HANDS WHERE I CAN SEE THEM!" He yelled again as he grabbed the man from behind, forcibly pulling him off the lady, getting ready to pound this scumbag into the ground.
