North to the Future

Worst I ever experienced was a -50 windchill. Only my eyes were exposed, and they froze shut whenever I blinked. I look at this and think. "JUST NO"
A snorkel hood parka with a wolverine ruff is perfect for those times. Keeps your eyes back where it's warm. My polar parka only has a coyote ruff. It works, but not as good as wolverine. Visibility sucks, but you just have to be careful.

A FB friend flew back to ANC yesterday and was bitching about how much she hates Alaska. She and her hubby have lived here for over 30 years. They've had good jobs and now have a decent retirement stake and really good benefits. Enough so, to buy land in the 50th state and start building a home there. If the place was sooooo bad, why did they stay and raise a family here? I understand the mentality of wanting an easier living and many old people leave for that. Most don't bitch about where they gained their wealth from.

"This frigid situation is not unusual, according to Rick Thoman, a climate specialist for the Alaska Center for Climate Assessment and Policy. “This is not record cold,” he said after passing on a graphic he made showing impressive minuses all over Alaska during the past week."

I am happy not to have to have a machine that can drag out long beams, etc for the cabin.
