Obama for change?

One source of revenue that would be better than an income tax hike is to impose an excise on plastic bags of one cent each.

This would end of good for the environment, because it would further an already-existing trend to cut down on the use of plastic bags, but it wouldn't create new income anywhere, just move costs to the same folks that would have to pay for any tax scheme proposed by the rich--to the basic-commodity consumer, and, much more, to the businesses that would have to collect, account for, and deliver the collection of pennies (over and above throwing the plastic bag companies out of business).

Anything that isn't a luxury tax is going to hit the same middle class and poor people no matter how you decide to take it.

The choice to leave Gates as SecDef is a great admission that there isn't a Democrat capable of running that Department during a war.

No, it's not. It's recognition that Gates has been running the middle road and doing fine under the circumstances and that this isn't a good time either to bring any confusion into the function of the Defense Department or to give those we're fighting heart that there will be radical changes (or exploitable confusion) at the helm. Above that, Gates isn't exactly a politicized Republican at all. He's a government bureacrat--rising to the top of government (director of central intelligence) within the context of not being permitted to voice a political affiliation at all--who has served a whole string of administrations equally regardless of what party controlled the administration.

Gawd, you rightist ideologues are a trip. If Obama didn't put at least a smattering of nominal Republicans (which is what Gates is) in his administration you'd knock him for that; when he does, you knock him anyway.

what irkes me about Obama is that he is all for change...he said one thing when he was trying to beat hillary....then he changed his story....then when he was running for prez he said that he was for change...and said that he would do this and that ...and now that he was elected he has brought only Dems into his Cabinet....he's has become Bill Clinton part 2, lie till you get what you want...granted that is everyone in DC. what also irks me is that these fools in DC have no idea on what real life is, on having a real job or the stress of working in a small company. they talk crap and offer more crap...and wait to see what sticks on the wall

And I take it that those who are living in Podunk, Iowa, have this vast knowledge on how to manage a country? :D

A. He said his government would be diverse. That doesn't mean appointing 50% Republicans. (And why in the hell should he anyway? You can bet the Republicans wouldn't do anything like that.)

B. He hasn't finished nominating his cabinet--only about 50% done (and what a surprise that the rightist ideologues are already howling about who isn't in it).

C. He wouldn't have to even start doing any of that for over a month. I believe he's setting up an administration more than a bit faster than the norm. (Again, what a surprise that the rightist ideologues are already howling about how someone is being president more than a month before he's been inaugurated.)

D. The only promises of a presidential candidate to take a real good look at in detail in any event is one running for a second term--having been in the job long enough to have a feel for what both the issues/problems and and best approaches are. (Index here the Bush administration that asked for $700,000 to follow one set of "solutions" to the economic problems and now is saying, "Opps sorry, we've decided we need to do these other things instead.")

No one not already in the office can be to specific on what they will/can do about large chunks of government policy until they get into office and look around for a bit at what the problem is and what the possible solution is, not to mention how they are going to get it approved--and while they are looking, both the problem and the possible solutions are changing.

But I guess someone from Podunk, Iowa, just doesn't understand this, heh?

I suspect you decided to be irked first and then went looking for something to be irked about.

No I think it is to maintaine the direction of the Wars and sooth the military that is anxious about how he is going to handel thier budgets. Since Bush bankrupted the Government, Obama is going to have to cut Defense Spending to fund his social adgenda.

Leaving Gates at the helm in the puzzle palace will calm the zelots and give Obama a chance at launching his domestic adgenda w/o Repugnicans objecting to the effects, particularly if Obama gives Gates a challenget o cut Defense 40%.

I say we ought to let Obama have a lot of rope for six months and see if Hillary and the rest of the Cabinet start acting like Managers.

I am not optimistic but there is a faint hope that the Change he brings may be for the best.

What I think is alternately funny and scary about the right wing reaction is that if we Democrats acted like this, immediately questioning the decisions of the authority they had elected... we all know what their first response would be....

"Why do you hate freedom?"

I mean, c'mon! When YOUR guy was in charge and WE questioned HIS actions... you all accused us of being "anti-American." And Palin was STILL doing that as recently as Nov. 1st.

Remember what your response was when we complained about the actions of W, elected with a FAR smaller mandate?

"If you don't like it, don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out. He was elected, fair and square
<<<something you even said during the silly circus in Florida>>> so now you have to deal with it. This is what the majority wants and that's the way America works."

Well, guess what? Mirror time, baby.

Besides, the man still won't take office for seven weeks yet. Don't ya think you ought to withhold judgment until there is something to judge?

There is no city in Iowa named Podunk.

Hmmm. I hadn't really taken stupidity into account. All this time I was thinking just of a run-of-the mill rightist ideologue.

You have frequently, in effect, accused me of making things up and posting them here. Now, it appears you have made up a whole municipality.

so you hold him to a different standard than the others? Obama says one thing...then does another? he sells people on x to meet goal a, then sells people on y to meet goal b....

geeze, to me he seems to be the next bush.

are you that freaking blind?

Some continue to wear the blinders they've worn for the past eight years.

How about waiting another 44 days until he's actually president?

He is. He's worse than Bush. In fact, let's get rid of him now and give Bush another term. That's what I say.

why toss in the McCain/Palin issue...think outside of the box.... we need someone to pull the country together and not play spin control in DC.

I'm not happy with Rep, or Dem and maybe I'm jealous....that I wish that I have the passion like so many here to follow one party but I just don't. to me following one party is like being in a line..not sure where the line is going but when you finally get to the front of the line you watch the person ahead of you jump off a bridge...and you jump cuz the person ahead of you jumped.

its like when John Edwards said, "isn't it enough that I'm 95% honest" after talking about his affair? jeeze his wife was going to treatment for her cancer so he thinks its okay to have an affair?

and I'm just as happy to rip apart the Rep side, but there seems to be so many people that just can't see the truth about Dems here...

I agree.

I keep seeing this same phenomenon among many McCain/Palin supporters.

ah, no. who would have ever thought that saying "bush" would be a bad thing....bad joke however, we had the wrong bush in office.

my point is this, how blind some people are. Obama says that he will do x...then later he does z....he is becoming a great salesperson. say this to people in New York...say this to people in L.A....he is as str8 as ice and that is why I do not trust him.

He is. He's worse than Bush. In fact, let's get rid of him now and give Bush another term. That's what I say.

And what will change in 44 days? just another typical politician that will tell you anything to get your vote.

Some continue to wear the blinders they've worn for the past eight years.

How about waiting another 44 days until he's actually president?

Sweetie, you displayed your absolute cluelessness during the past few months.

Your opinion is just that.
