Old School Musicianship… Rock and Roll.. Jazz… Blues… Big Band even…

OMG! This 13 year old just melted my brain… she’s playing a cover of Highway Star from Deep Purple, and she gets every nuance of the solo… perfect. Amazing.

Billy Joel - Scenes from an Italian Restaurant

I was reading online that Billy Joel will be releasing his first pop single in many years, a song titled “Turn the Lights Back On", and it said it "will be available in Italian Restaurants everywhere on February 1." So I just had to give this a listen!

Neil Diamond - Sweet Caroline

Birthday wishes to Neil Diamond, born January 24, 1941. He's had a lot of great songs through his career, this being one of them.

Excellent choice! And I just watched a video last night from the “Professor Of Rock” about one of Neil’s songs.

That was a great video! I'd read in the past that I Am... I Said was auto-biographical but I didn't know about Dave Barry savaging the song in one of his books (and his apology didn't sound very sincere IMHO). My brother had the 45 of I Am... I Said and I think I played it more than he did. So I guess I've to play it

That is such a great song! And I used to read Dave Barry a lot, and I doubt he was sincere in his apology, or even trying to be sincere - that doesn’t sound to me like something Dave would do. Although I haven’t read any of his stuff in years.

One other birthday I just picked up on: the Late Warren Zevon, born January 24, 1947. Hard to believe he's been gone over 20 years. Though most people only know him for one song, his entire music catalog is worth checking out. And that one song is, of course...

Warren Zevon - Werewolves of London

Hard to believe, but it was 55 years ago today (January 30, 1969) that The Beatles played their famous "rooftop concert." Sadly, it would be the last time they played live together.

The Beatles - Get Back (live)

EDIT: I see the original video got taken down (apparently Apple Music didn't like it being on Youtube). This one is still up, though it's the third take of "Get Back."

Cab Calloway - Minnie the Moocher

I have to admit I didn't discover Cab Calloway until I saw him in The Blues Brothers movie. I think that's about the time I started exploring big band music, so I have Mr. Calloway to thank for that.
