Ok. This wasn't going to be as easy as he hoped. He was definitely going to have to take the lead. He was okay with that. In fact, he should have just done it from the get go. She was hesitant and he had to draw her out of her shell.
"That is not a problem. Why don't we start with a couple of easy ones. What was the best sex you ever had and what is your favorite position?" He let the question linger for just one second and began to laugh. " I am just kidding. Before you hit the road and started to run what kind of work did you do?
He saw her tense and wondered if he went too far with the joke. When she relaxed he decided it would be a good idea to take it easy on her.
"S, you were in the hospitality industry. I imagine that you did very well; considering the beautiful smile that you have. That combined with your eyes would have made the customers feel comfortable."
"Well, I worked in a meat packing plant. Did whatever they needed me to do. The guy I worked for is the wealthiest guy in the county....the mayor of the town, and also the head of the local mob. He had it all. So, I did whatever he wanted me to do. Then, one day I saw him beating the hell out of a guy.... a guy that owed him money. I wasn't supposed to see it, so, I hit the road and haven't looked back. There is no doubt that there is a hit out on me, so, that is why I am always looking around before I go anywhere or do anything. We are a hell of a pair, aren't we?"
When he and I first got together. Before all the alcohol and his parents passing and him blowing through all he money they left him inside of a year.
She sighed.
Finding his darker side and the fact that some people liked that darker side so clearly since some women liked that darker side all of us clearly had to which only made him worse.
"I am sorry to hear that things changed so drastically for you, and I guess, indirectly, for him. It seems like you two were happy for a while. What was it about the early times that made you so happy?"
He leaned forward in his chair trying to show her that he really cared about what she had to say.
"Well, my happiest times were with my mom. I didn't get to spend much time with her growing up. She had to work two jobs just to put food on the table. When she had some time off, she would take me places.... We would do something special. That always makes me smile."
He sat back as he thought of his mom. "She had a tough life. She sacrificed a. It for me. She died way too young."
"We didn't have two nickels to rub together, but we were happy....at least I was. When. Look back on it I realize what my mom sacrificed, and it probably is the reason she died so young."
He looked over at her and smiled. "Mom made sure that I was happy. She was my hero. It makes me want to help others when I have the opportunity...sort of paying it forward."
"We need to find a place for you to hide. In these old houses there are crawl spaces and attics and secret hiding places. We will find a safe place for you to go. You should go there if you see someone coming up the driveway. Stay there until I come get you or you are 100% sure it is safe."
"That sounds like a good idea. I don't think anyone is going to be here tonight. I think the two of us are safe with each other tonight."
He watched her to make sure she was relaxed. The fact that she wanted to have a plan told him how afraid she was. He didn't plan on letting her out of his sight for a while. He would keep her close.
Several days went by and there was a hiding place with a couple of ways for her to get into it well hidden from sight and the old woman was having them help out from time to time at the diner as well to make a little money. Random shifts so that they can always have one of them home to work on the house and tend to stuff around the old home place.
She had gotten comfortable and found it easy to forget anything other than this now relaxed and happy life even feeling a little something for him as well.
They started to get into a routine. He still checked the surroundings before either of them left the house. He never saw anything out of the ordinary, but that did not stop him from checking every single time.
He was not comfortable with her working the night shift. He agreed to work any night shifts that came up. Tonight's shift was pretty slow. When the last customer left, he cleaned up, locked up, and headed home. He walked into the house and collapsed on the couch.
She kept looking out the window towards the main road. Wandering around fixing up and arranging things or watching tv but she always went back to the window.
