It has to do with the speed the round it leaving the chamber, again, think in regards to a shot gun. When you saw the barrel down on a shot gun, the blast becomes more powerful, as well as very illegal. The same pyhsics apply to the riffle. You would destroy the riffles abilty to be accurate, in fact it probaly couldnt hit a target over ten yards, but the power of that round leaving the chamber would be monterous as well as the recoil. Wish we had a weapons expert that could set us straight on this little debate, lol

What is it about a shorter barrel that makes a shotgun more powerful? The shot spreads out more.
Rifle barrels are... well... rifled. They have spirals that the edge of the bullet catches. As the bullet is launched down the barrel, those sprials spin the bullet. Thats where the power comes from. Now, saw off that barrel. You're going to have LESS spin, which would, like you said, make it much less accurate. But why would sawing it off make it more powerful? The fact that it could be used for room to room, like you said, is true. It'll still blow through a guy. But what about sawing off part of the barrel would make it more powerful than it already is. With losing rotation, wouldn't it give it less penetration?
And I think we'll all agree here guys... less penetration is BAD.

There are a number of reasons it becomes more powerful. First and foremost is friction. Friction with the high pressure air being created in front of the shots as well as the barrel. If you have a shorter barrel, the shot has less friction with it and the air is allowed to move out of the way of the shot more easily.

actually, i thought of ONE thing that MIGHT affect it. shorter imact time. physics says the shorter the imact, like the faster you pull your hand away from a punch or whatever, the more powerful. the might be the same for a rifle....

yeah, no problem they are both wounded, but they DO take quite a beating. as i recall to the game, something like 8 or 9 shots to the head with a pistol, or two or three with the shotgun. to the head that is.
