[OVER 18's ONLY] Do you remember your first vinyl?

Fun to say I am the embarrassed owner of a Samantha Fox album. :D I think it's the only one that survived the musty cellar. Surely, I cannot be the only one!

That explains a lot.

Oh, my god! Nostalgia! I found my box of old singles, stuck up on a high shelf actually in my little office.

I actually have 'Yakety Sax' in the box. Trouble is, I have nothing to play it or the others on . .

I still can't remember what my first single or album were, but the oldest single in the box is 'Swing Low, Sweet Chariot' by the Four Preps, 1961, of all things! Guess it says something about the earlier me, as does 'House of the Rising Sun' (The Animals), 'Go' (and 'Stop' on the flip - Sounds Incorporated) and others. I put the box back and can't be bothered to get it down again.

I have the UB40 version, on CD. :D

I've got one of those boxes somewhere. I daren't go find it, all kinds of embarrassments hidden within.

And round here you all have it, even if it is vicariously by proxy, so to speak . . .

Oooh, you lot are making me in such a kissy mood today.

Vinyl? I had shellac.

My first records were 10 inch 78rpm records for the gramophone.

I was given The Teddy Bears' Picnic for a birthday.

When I actually bought my own 78s I think the first one was 'How much is that doggie in the window'.

I still have about 500 78rpm records. Apart from pre First World War single-sided 12 inch 78s of opera singers such as Chaliapin, Dame Nellie Melba, Terrazini and pianists I have many 1950s skiffle records - Nancy Whiskey, The Vipers, Lonnie Donegan.

At least I now have an electric gramophone.

Your comment brings back memories. I grew up [or whatever it is that I did] in a very rough inner city area. If you were a gang leader or the whi' boy, you had your own song. If you wandered into a dance or whatever, they would play your theme song [or else you would beat the crap out of them]. Whi' boy's theme song was a little number by Bullmoose Jackson backed by Tiny Bradshaw and his orchestra. The title was "The Big Ten Inch Record." I never owned the record and it rarely achieved air play. The opening line was:

"I got a gal and she's no cinch, but I really get her going when I pull out my big ten inch!" [I won't cite the rest of the lyrics as they get dirty after that.]

There were 10 inch LPs (33rpm) in the 1950s. They were longer than 45 singles and were replaced by 45 EPs (extended play) records which could have 2 songs a side. I still have a couple of 10 inch LPs. I think they were all before stereo.

first off...
fuck you for making me remember
it was shaun cassidy ...da do run run
damn you to hell monkey boy

As a younger kid, we had albums for kids. Disney soundtracks, sesame street and stuff like that.

The first Album I chose and got for myself was Kiss Alive.

On a side note: I have a box of 8 track tapes stashed at my moms house. I don't remember what all is in there, except for Hotel California. I wonder if old 8 tracks are worth any money. Does anyone know?

Isn't the qualifier a bit redundant? Under 18's aren't supposed to be on Lit to discourge. :p

I don't remember my first vinyl -- Many records were still made of Carnuba Wax when I was of an age to start collecting records. (You could still buy first run 78's as well as 33.333 LPs made of wax.)

It's also difficult to isolate which records were "mine" and which were just "my favorites."

The first single I remember listening to was "How Much is That Doggy in the Window" by Homer and Jethro.

OMG...Ihad that Lee Marvin single...came off the movie...western...Gentlemen Paint your wagons I think. It was funny. God...whoever told him he could sing anyway? Well...actually, his voice kind of grew on ya though.

Just "Paint your wagons." Clint Eastwood was singing in it. THat's a scar that'll never heal.

My first vinyl was "Birds, Bees, Beasts and Little Fishes" by Mr. Pete Seeger. It had a great rendition of "There was an old lady who swallowed a fly."

I was 3, so it was 1977.

My first album was a Micky Mouse Disco, I think. The first one I remember listening to was the Grease soundtrack. I think I still know all the words to every song.

Guess I shouldn't have confessed that?

SJ

First single - Deep Purple, Black Night
First album - Rick Wakeman, 6 Wives of Henry VIII

I'm still buying vinyl too (some of it even new!)

oh, we've gotta pm later!

I think the first vinyl I remember was one of a bunch of 45 rpm records that my aunt used to bring me whenever she visited Florida in the summer. It was 'Town Without Pity' by Gene Pitney, if I remember correctly. God, the angst in that song!

I was lucky...my uncle owned a juke box business in upstate New York, and I got a big box of records every summer, even into the mid-60's

Now, surprisingly, I'm into shellac, and very early vinyl, with a special interest in Benny Goodman recordings (I have over 220 of them, all in very good condition.)

Ogbashan, we'll have to talk later. You seem to have the knowledge that comes from being there (just how old ARE you, anyway?) <LOL> :D

They're not worth anything, but keep them in case you happen to buy a 1978 Oldsmobile with only an 8 track player like I did. We cruised all summer listening to Morrison Hotel and Cat Stevens' Greatest Hits. :)

I inherited a bunch of 45s as a kid and by the time I started buying music myself I was buying cassettes so, nope can't remember the first vinyl. I can only remember a couple of what was handed down to me either, though I recall the stack of records seemed HUGE to my little kid self. I know "Tie Me Kangaroo Down" was one & I think "Spirit in the Sky" was another. :D

It was either Huckleberry Hound (with El Kabong on the flipside) or Alvin and the Chipmunks.

The first albums I took seriously were the ones I was listening to when I got high for the first time: Dark Side of the Moon (Pink Floyd) and Four Way Street (Crosby Stills Nash and Young). I can still smell pot smoke, suntan oil and the ocean when I hear Otis Redding's "Dock On the Bay" or anything at all by Marvin Gaye.

Vinyl, weed and Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. The only thing missing was fabulous sex. Thank God there was something to look forward to. Back then, I'd have sworn on a stack of bibles that life could offer nothing more perfect than getting stoned on the screened porch of a rented beach shack with my roommates while listening to Marvin singing, "Mercy, mercy me...Things ain't what they used to be.."

Oh gawd.....

I can't even remember. I was raiding my parents Beatles and Stones and Doors very early in life. I remember buying new Kiss albums in the seventies, and also Aerosmith, Ted Nugent and even Elvis.

I have many still, including every piece of vinyl I could get my hands on from Adam & the Ants (later just Adam) and the Stray Cats. The Clash, The Ramones. Roman Holiday. U2. The Pistols. Dead Kennedys. Oingo Boingo. Never stopped loving the Doors.
