Planetside - OOC

My bad on that part, Jedi. For some reason the race descriptions didn't copy and paste like that should have. Pilot error, no doubt.

Read up in my reply to Ren about the Trellosians. They are essentially bipedal lizards without tails, and retain saurian specifics like color changing skin and ability to see into the infra-red spectrum. Males are taller than females and have a crest on their heads. Normal skin tones range from blues, reds, to greens, with varying colors in between. Their color changing is pretty much like a chameleon, in that they can pretty well match whatever their surroundings are. I wouldn't think they would be able to duplicate plaids or anything like that lol, but they can readily color-match to the surrounding environment's predominant color AND texture.

In other words, if they were standing against a tree, they could become brown with a patterned skin like tree bark. Next to a stone wall, they would become gray with a stonelike texture pattern.

Of course, wearing clothing and combat suits limits this effectiveness, with the exception of the SMF adaptive camo suit.

Yeah, all SMF teams are standard issued a tactical nuclear device. Never know when you might have to bring down a city or something. There will be much more details on issued weapons and stuff when we get all the characters lined up.

I didn't post as much descriptions about the races now that I remember because I thought you guys would enjoy making them your own. I just named them and gave them basic qualities. But I did go back in the first post and flesh them out a bit more. Add to them, or create your own. This ORP is yours to have fun with, and I've got some good stuff lined up for the characters when we start.

So Trellosians are essentially mid-level color changing/camoflauge creatures. Chameleons are too, but they are easily trumped by the octopus' ability to camoflauge itself.

And about those suppessors, and the sniper weapon. How load is the sniper weapon?

Yeah, octopi rule when it comes to camo.

I just updated the character bios on the main post. And there are some more tidbits scattered throughout.

I'm kinda thinking about a Trellosian's bite being poisonous, or maybe their saliva has healing properties. Any thoughts, there?

Well, there are two creatures that I know of that have toxic bites that are not due to venom glands like in snakes. The Gila Monster and the Komodo Dragon. The Gila Monster has venomous saliva, while the Komodo's saliva is laced with bacteria.

But to have a poisonous bite and healing saliva would be a bit oxymoronic. Why not vary it by individual? Some will have a poisonous bite, others will have the healing saliva.

Yep, I'm familiar with both of those.

Perhaps a venomous saliva....but I'll let whomever plays one decide on that issue. Too much to think about right now. Think I'll go to bed instead.

So, you're going to bed then? Oh well.

Hey, wait a minute. You haven't answered my last question. How loud is the sniper weapon? Would it need a silencer?

I have thought up a bio. Hope it is alright.

Oh, he's going to be blast to work with. :D

Hold on, 5' 8" and 145 lbs? He's shorter than I am and about just as heavy. How...strange and/or ironic.

name: Cormac Sworddancer.
age: 33
race: Riada
rank: Sergeant Major (second in command)
height: 6'6"
weight: 350
eyes: Grey
hair: Black
distinguishing marks: woad stained honour scars coming down from below the eye to the jaw.

other descriptives: One horn is broken roughly in half, wears a long beard and moustache, carefully groomed and braided. hair is kept in a wild mane between his horns. wears a torc of twisted gold around his neck at all times. Always keeps a full carton of smokes in his field pack.

Kit: Riada pattern carbine. being as the Riada are a good deal stronger then humans, they are often issued a 15 mm 75 round weapon giving them an extra punch in a firefight. Cormac's has a wolf's tail hanging from the butt, and two bear claws hanging from the barrel. Wears infantry heavy armor. Has quick deploying claws coming from his left gauntlet. On his left hip he wears the traditional Riada claoimh dragan 2 and a half feet long. carries a heavy pistol in a shoulder holster on his right side. Also wears a long SMF issue combat and field knife on the back of his belt. and finally a set of throwing knives wrap around his right thigh.

Good-natured and friendly, but knows when to take command and act his part. is well known for his tendency to get into melee as much and as quick as possible. Pretty much your typical riada warrior, great friend and terrible enemy. Fond of a good brawl and a good drink, is also known as the source for cigarettes among his squad.

Hows that?

Awesome characters guys!

Jedi, the rail gun is not silenced because it is very, very quiet. A rail gun has no moving parts or concussive blast to propel a projectile. The rail gun uses superconducting principles to propel its round at ultra-high velocities. I would think that if they really existed (yet!), you probably wouldn't hear the gun actually shoot, but would more than likely hear the 'zip' of the round, or possibly a very small sonic boom at the muzzle, but it would be more closely to sharp 'crack' sound than a 'boom'.

One way to get around the sonic boom is a muzzle brake that can dissipate the shock waves from the muzzle. Unlike a firearm, though, the rail gun projectile is at max velocity while it is still inside the gun's barrel. The only thing the barrel is really for is to "focus" the projectile. So I'm not really sure if there would even be a sonic boom or 'crack'. Use your discretion on this one.

Or just purely coincidental....

I like all of your ideas but i am not sure how i would do as far as weponry and war far goes, or the tactical side of things.

However i would like to join and suggest perhaps making another race who is dependent on one or another of the species for protection who are healers, with a few defencive spells such as the ability to put up a barrier around themselves and one or two other people.. nothing mayjor just simple abilitys, i am getting most of my idea for this race from winged elves i've read about and thought perhaps they might fit in here with some changes adapt them for this sanareo.. here is some information about them and please let me know if its alright or not.
...............................................................

Avariel are graceful and striking, standing as tall as most humans, though they appear even more fine-boned. Their features are more chiseled, more angular, their eyes larger, and golden, azure, emerald, or rich hazel.

The hollow bones that enable them to fly make them frail, though their chests and shoulders are strong, powering their magnificent eagles' wings. Their plumage is usually the purest of whites, though blacks and greys are known, and their hair is white, black, or more rarely, gold or silver.

they have no facial or body hair. They prefer simple, loose clothing that does not impede their wings, usually in pale white, grey, or silver. Avariel have shorter lifespans than those of other races, reaching majority at 50, and seldom living beyond the age of 300.

The avariel do not sleep, instead entering meditative trance for 4 hours per day, They also are just as appreciative of beauty, creativity, and the natural world, but their greatest joy by far, is that of flight.

Even when not soaring through the heavens, they can be seen with a far-off look in their eyes. Their love of the unbounded sky is matched only by their discomfort of enclosed spaces, and the avariel suffer from crippling claustrophobia, tho some have overcome there fear of inclosed spaces enough to travle for short periods of time abord starships to better enable them to help heal those who protect them.

AmenRa more can be added or changed to fit how ever you wish it too this was simply another idea to add to many, if accepted here is my char if not i'll pick on of the races already mentioned *smiles* ..

Rishka, Avariel
age, 50
occupation, healer
hight, 4ft
weght, 65 lbs

Riska has long black hair an golden eyes with beautiful white eagles wings, she is one of few who have mastered the fear of inclosed spaces, and is able to travle abord a ship for at least a month or two before her closterphobia starts becoming an issue for her, but she has found that if she can keep herself busy and her mind on something aside from where she is at then she can last longer if necessary. Tho she prefers the skys of her planet she cannot deny the need to heal when it is necessary nor that her peopel owe there lives to the ones who protect them from harm.

Interesting character Sprite. Should prove an interesting contrast to the other characters, if she is allowed.

I have another question about the weapons, Ra. 10MM rounds. What is their stopping power compared to what we have today? Are they more powerful than 9mm and not as powerful as .45 cals, or are they more powerful than .45 cals?

Sprite: your character is fine, and I think she would make a fine addition as one of the team of scientists that were rescued from the facility on Phylos. A note about them: they were genetic/bio engineers, so a healer/physician would definitely have a place among them. However, should you decide to make her part of the SMF team (we still don't have a medic), then she needs to be fluent in all species medicine and emergency medical care. Do what you see fit there.

One other thing: no magic, no spells. Mental telepathy or specialized healing abilities through mental/physical touch is allowed, but the whole magic thing just won't work here.

Jedi: These 10mm we're using aren't the ones designed in the mid-80's. These are completely new. They are the caseless rounds upon which all other combustion projectiles are measured. Now, this isn't to say a rail gun sniper weapon wouldn't use some other size or shape projectile. I actually thought about a flattened and rounded wedge-shaped projectile made of a polymerized allow. Its designed as a penetrator round, made to go through stuff very, very fast, thereby creating a hyper-expansive wound cavity. (Think about shooting a watermelon with a .308. The watermelon explodes not because of the size of the bullet, but because of the kinetic energy the bullet imparts to the watermelon while it is traveling through it at 2,200 fps). Anyway, the 10mm round was designed to be used in both rifle or handgun, and imparts a considerable amount of energy to its target upon impact. It's impact energy at 100 meters (from a carbine-length barrel) is about that of a .44 magnum at 25 meters. However, because the 10mm round is traveling (again from the carbine, handgun velocity is less) at around 1,900 fps, the wound channel it creates is enormous. A well placed shot center-mass on an average human would punch a fist size hole, as well as knock the target completely down. Hope that clarifies some stuff for you. I completely made up all that data. Modify it as you like, but I think it is reasonably sufficient for our purposes.

I know you guys are eager to get started, but I wanted to give another day or two to see if anyone else wants to join up.

Cool?

sounds good to me. i think ill have Cormacs pistol use the same ammunition as his rifle, so he can simply carry alot of one kind of ammunition. and i hope the addition of armor was alright, i kind of picture it as being similar in bulk to the katarn-class armor delta squad used in Republic Commando. i figured being such valuable and finely tuned instruments of war, the powers that be would see their way clear to giving them a bit o' hard to cover their flesh lol.

My character

Name: Atal “Pot Shot” Azal
Race: Trellosian
Age: 28
Height: 6’0”
Weight: 180
Skin tone: Green
Eyes: Brown, lizard like
Rank: Specialist (one rank below Sergeant)
Sniper
Weapons and Equipment:
  • Modified medium rail gun - range 1800 meters before round starts losing accuracy and stopping power. At 2000 meters, round has no stopping power. 10 round magazine, three extra magazines available. Covered in adaptive camo skin. When fired, sounds like a twig snapping. Uses a case-less version of the .50 cal of antiquity (i.e. current modern day).
  • Personal handgun – 8 round magazine, three extra magazines available; uses 10mm rounds. Holster is covered in adaptive camo
  • 12” combat knife
  • Combat pack capable of carrying 30 lbs of equipment; covered in adaptive camo
  • 9 grenades – 3 frag, 3 flash, 3 concussion (kept in easily accessible pockets on combat pack)
  • Personal survival kit – includes first aid kit, matches, lighter, canteen, water-purification tabs, infra-red beacon, and Swiss Army knife equivalent. Inside combat pack.
  • Adaptive camo suit

Bio: Atal didn’t get his nickname “Pot Shot” for his shooting abilities, which are considerable, but for his often sarcastic “pot shots” at those he interacts with. Unless specifically told to do something and how to do it, Atal will do things his way, which typically does not go over very well with higher ranks. As a sniper, Atal is a firm believer in the one shot, one kill philosophy, and if he can get more than one kill with only one shot—which has only happened twice during his 7 year career—he’d be quite happy. Typically stealthy, he does not like making much noise, as noise is a sniper’s bane (that is, when the sniper makes the noise, anything else helps him escape notice).

Armor is fine, Ren. One thing about SpecOps guys, and this is true for the ones I've worked with, even though they are a precision military unit, there are usually lots of customization allowed because of the nature of their work. All SMF operators are issued some type of body armor, but modifications and personal equipment is okay because some species (like Riada) have their own stuff.

Jedi, your character is really cool. I like the nickname. You obviously sat down and thought about this one for a minute.

Here are some more details and specs:

Alliance Defense Command rank - very similar to US Army/Marines/RAF (SAS)
E1 - Private
E2 - Private First Class
E3 - Lance Corporal
E4 - Corporal (or Specialist I if soldier has combat specialization training)
E5 - Sergeant (Specialist II)
E6 - Staff Sergeant
E7 - Gunnery Sergeant
E8 - Master Sergeant
E9 (A) - Chief Master Sergeant (staff position for command)
E9 (B) - Sergeant Major (combat unit command position - platoon assignment)

Officer rank is pretty much the same - Lt, Capt, Major, Lt. Col, Col, General.

There are lots of standard equipment such as water carriers, ammo, electronics kits, personal data/comm units, blah blah blah that I will post for each character when we kick this thing off.

should all of us have nicknames? such as a call sign like in Top Gun? if so mine will be Blade or Smokey

Although I'm not running things here, Ren, I would say a nickname is entirely up to you. Although, in a tight-nit military team, nicknames are not uncommon.

Yeah, Cormac is still a SGTMAJ. It's reversed from our military, wherein a SGTMAJ is a staff command position ("desk job") and a M/SGT is usually a field command position. I like the idea of a SGTMAJ in the field.

As far a nicknames, that's up to you. If you want, they can be your team call signs for radio comm purposes. Usually, the team is given a call sign, and then each operator has his own. Like the team may be called "Cobra Team", with the members being "Cobra One", "Cobra Two", and so forth. For some reason, the military likes for the team leader to be called "6", i.e. "Cobra Six", but that's all up to you guys.

The Alliance Defense Command has nine Special Mission Force teams. Teams One through Four are based at SMF Command HQ on Mars, Team Five is a mobile team, and Teams Six through Nine are based on Station Delta, an orbiting space station near Trellos.

You can be whatever team you like, and give the team a name if you like.
