goto user cp and then down the left hand side there should be Edit Avatar, click on it and then it's straight forward from there

I do appreciate your specific directions! Unfortunately, it's a little more complicated than that. Just as when I first signed up....in the Edit Avatar area, there's only ONE radio button to choose from, which is seemingly permanently selected. "No avatar selected" or some such. There's no other option to choose, no way to deselect that damn button.

How do you get ahold of a moderator or IT guru around here?

Drug use and abuse is always an interesting, if not contentious, topic. There was recently a rather compelling report on NPR about an ex-under-cover narcotics cop who, after something like 15 years, was so disgusted with the duplicity and failure, that he quit his gig. He was saying that the war on drugs is a complete and utter failure. Despite all the effort spent on 'catching the bad guys,' (the dealers, distributors, and manufactures) no serious effort has been made to reduce demand.

I live in California, and Mexican pot is available just as it always has been. Homeland security has, in no way shape or form stemmed the tide. I don't see crack heads and coke snorters taking to the streets in search of supplies. Interdiction has always failed and will continue to fail as long as people want the drugs.

So, if interdiction fails, then what? Education? Sure, we can start at a very early age, teaching kids about the perils of drugs. I know that it prevented me from using them for a good long time. Until High School, at least. Are scare tactics what we want to equip our children with? Are those the most effective tools for them to use? I don't think so. I think that kids need a more profound education, one that helps them to understand both the limitations and capabilities of their minds and bodies. I believe that deep relaxation techniques, self-hypnosis, positive aphorisms, etc could be taught to really young kids. (I learned self-hypnosis when I was 6 or 7, from my dad) When kids understand the real power of their minds, they can release it for fun and/or prophet without the use of drugs.

Education does not simply replace interdiction. Full legalization, to me, seems like the only civilized path. Some people risk their lives, and the lives of their loved ones, for a fix. For want of a clean needle, people become infected and die every day. A huge majority of crime in the US is drug related. If we removed all the financial incentives for criminals, they'd all have to get jobs sweeping up.

I'm not the first to expound on these ideas. They've been around for years. My question is: Why, then, if these ideas clearly make sense (and they do) have they not been implemented?

hmmmmmmmmm there is no radio button that says use custom avatar???

usually at the top of a board like the am pic board it tells you who the modirators are and you can click on them and pm them just like you would pm me

Right you are! ...and that tends to be the way we address nearly every issue in western civilization...also leading to that mentality that "drugs make people do horrible things."

NO, horrible people do horrible things...no matter if they've ever been near drugs or anything else at all.

Australia....well, depending on what timezone you're in, you're probably about 16 hours AHEAD of my day.

How about an avatar showing your favorite rude gesture? Or one large eyeball? That'll get everyone laughing and recognizing your posts right away.

You know, I'd love to agree that we should all have as much privacy as possible, yet it's also our govt's responsibility to protect us and how else can they if not permitted to look right in the bag? Is there another way to ensure certain items aren't carried where they can do harm to masses of people? Longer lines to get on the train...everyone can adjust to that just like rush hour traffic in your cars. And as far as carrying around your other illegal items you DON'T intend to hurt others with, you'll just have to get more creative. I guess my opinion is that public safety should come before one of the facets of our privacy, but I'll be all ears if someone has another solution for ensuring what happened in London can't happen again. As it is, I've gotten over my sense of privacy and shyness when it comes to airports, knowing the weird looking dude checking bags is ALWAYS going to select me, empty the contents of everything I'm carrying for all to see, and make me practically do a little dance before him to check my self. Whatever gets his rocks off; can't let it bug me.

Hmm, 16 hours (somewhere in the US), can't be more exact than that!

I do have an average pic of my eye on the computer somewhere, might see about adding it as my AV and change it when I get the chance (ie when I've taken a better photo).

I respect your view on privacy vs safety, and I can agree with it in some respects. I personally have no issue with showing my belongings to a bag inspector because I have nothing to hide and delays don't really impact on me all that much (just less time to enjoy some of the finer things in life!). However, being a bit of a pro-choice lobbier, I believe people should not be forced to reveal their private belongings to some trumped-up train driver who thinks they look a little suspicious. Also, let's face it, if there is something I really don't want you to find, you aren't going to find it. And if someone is carrying a bomb or something similarly harmful to mass life, then they REALLY aren't going to want a bag inspector to find it.

I'm not sure about you, but the bag inspectors themselves are usually gung-ho for about a month and then the comfort zone kicks in and the integrity of the process is lost anyway. So why invade people's civil liberties for something that will, in my opinion, reap very little if any reward. Don't get me wrong, if an initiative like this saves one life then it will have accomplished something, but I have my doubts that this is the area in which we need to be investing time and resources to fix the problem. The problem seems to me to be in the intelligence resources in preventing people from accessing the ingredients and support structures to create weapons and plans to take mass innocent lives. I don't have the answers, but searching bags on trains, buses is NOT the answer. UNLESS, they want to make it like travelling on planes, which does seem to be effective. (Have I just undone all of my argument with this last sentence).

Apart from that, your thread is really taking off. Congrats and keep the pics coming, I love them and might have to return the favour one day!
