Pure Moonlight (closed)

"Well...Kreston and I are here to maybe adopt a cub." Selena said, her nerves showing through as her hand trembled on her cane. "We've decided that we want another child in our lives and he said that you might have one that needs a good home."

"I have plenty more than one. But I can think of a few who might fit with you," Hara offered. "Wait right here."

Taking Gavros with her, Hara fetched two young cubs and one human toddler. The human boy was fairly active and seemed happy as anything to be in Gavros' arms. Meanwhile the cubs Hara held were two very different stories. The girl was about three years old with mahogany-colored fur and blue eyes, and the boy was only a year old with dark chocolate-colored fur and amber-flecked blue eyes. Both human and Wolf toddlers seemed content with Hara and Gavros, but the youngest seemed far more interested in Selena and Kreston.

Selena had taken a seat in one of the wooden chairs by the fire. She gave a smile to the toddlers as they played and explored. The smallest seemed absolutely taken with Kreston, playing with him and toddling after him with a sunny smile. The little boy was absolutely charming.

"Hello, little one." Selena said as she played with the little boy while the human and the other cub seemed content to stay near Hara. "What's your name?"

The little cub sat down in front of Selena, his strange eyes studying her for a moment before he murmured, "Mey... Ko."

"I don't think I've ever heard Mako say his own name before," Gavros murmured while the other cub happily nuzzled under his chin.

"Mako. My name is Selena." She said softly as she reached out and touched his soft, dark fur. "You're a very brave little boy and very handsome."

She glanced towards Kreston, struggling to gauge his reaction to the entire situation.

Kreston was smiling at the little boy just like he often had at Luna when she was small. The other two seemed perfectly happy to call Hara and Gavros their parents. But Mako was quite charmed with Selena and Kreston. He was bold, unlike the shy children Selena had had before they grew up. In fact, he was like a Ghis, similar to how Durban and Boar had been before their father weighed on their spirit.

Selena played with the cub a while longer before she looked at Hara. "Could we take him home for a trial run? I want to make sure that he'll fit in."

"Of course you can. If he's not comfortable, there's a few babies here who would fit with you. But I've been trying to find Mako a home since he was just a newborn. He's just never been comfortable elsewhere."

"I'm sure he'll fit in beautifully." Selena said softly as she looked back towards Mako with a smile. "Would you like to come home with us, little one? We have a nice little room that will be all for you. Toys. Good food. A brother and sister."

Selena painted a rosy picture of life at home. The truth was, she desperately wanted this entire situation to work. It would hurt her if it didn't. She knew that between herself and Kreston they were going to give that little boy the fighting chance that no one else ever had before.

Mako only seemed to understand half of what she said, but he was happy for the attention anyway, murmuring between Lunar, English, and baby talk. He climbed unsteadily to his feet and Kreston scooped him up. "Then let's take him home, love." He offered her his free hand to help her stand while Gavros fetched Mako's few belongings. They consisted of a blue baby blanket with a white diamond pattern in the center, a wooden toy figure of a dog, and a small sealed box.

"His father left this," Hara murmured as Gavros gave her the box. "He laid Mako in Gavros' arms and handed this to me, and told us to give it to whoever gave Mako a home. It's been returned with him every time. His father said he couldn't raise Mako after his mate died. But whatever is in here is for Mako when he turns fifteen and comes of age."

Selena took the sealed box with a nod. She would keep it safe for the cub until he was old enough to read what was inside and understand the words of a heart broken father. Glancing towards Kreston, she noticed that he seemed incredibly at ease holding the cub in his arms as Mako cuddled his blanket and carried his wooden dog.

"I promise you that we will try and make this work. Mako won't have to come back here." Selena said softly.

"Mako's a good boy. Just a little too energetic for his own good. I'm sure he'll love you two. That is, if you can keep up." Hara pressed a kiss to Mako's forehead before she sent them all on their way.

Selena smiled as the three of them started back to their home. She felt at ease with the busy cub, wanting to show him the world if she could. She laughed at him as he showed Kreston his wooden dog, playing with the little figure.

"We'll have to get you some more, little cub." Selena commented with a smile. "Your brother has always enjoyed carving."

Mako might not have understood, but he squeaked happily at the attention alone, trying to talk between baby sounds and a couple Lunar words that weren't quite understandable. By the time they'd reached home, he was beginning to get drowsy and Kreston put him to bed for a nap with his wooden dog and blanket. Kreston was already quite taken with the boy, that much was certain.

Once Mako was tucked into bed, Selena joined Kreston in the kitchen. She had a wide smile on her face, feeling stronger than she had in ages.

"This feels good." She murmured, kissing Kreston before she hugged him tightly. "I feel like he'll be a good match."

"If he's anything like the ball of energy Ruben became after we got here... I'm sure we can keep up," Kreston said with a nod while his arms wrapped around her waist. "And you've been practically glowing since we left Hara and Gavros."

"You have no idea how happy I am, Kres. The house doesn't feel so...empty anymore." She said with a wide grin on her face.

"I know exactly what you mean, love," he murmured and held her tight once more. It was an hour later than Ruben and Telma came by, followed shortly by Luna and Jan. Ghell would come the next day to meet Mako.

Mako was playing with his dog in the front room, glancing towards the door every time it opened and someone new entered. Selena grinned as Ruben and Luna got a good look at their new brother.

"Hello, little cub." Luna murmured as she sat down beside him, a wrapped gift in her hand. "I'm Luna. What's your name?"

"Mako!" The boy answered cheerily, immediately showing Luna the little dog. Ruben leaned on the wall beside his mother with a light smile, watching Jan and Telma join Luna. Mako loved the attention, but it seemed all he really knew how to say thus far was his own name.

"Mako. Nice to meet you!" Luna murmured as she helped him to unwrap the wooden horse figure that she had brought for him. "I figured your dog might be a like a little company. He seems a little lonely."

She laughed as his eyes lit up. He immediately took the horse and showed it off, his unusual eyes bright with excitement and mirth.

Mako was absolutely overjoyed by his new horse figure, and it had clearly won Luna a place in his heart immediately. But eventually his curiosity turned to Telma and Jan whom he also decided he liked, and then to Ruben whom Mako seemed curious but a tad wary of. He looked like Kreston, that much Mako knew, but Ruben was broader, a little taller, having inherited the giant form of a Ghis man despite starting small. Mako wandered up to him, but looked to Selena for help. He was brave and curious, but not quite enough to meet Ruben alone.

Selena smiled as Mako was suddenly stopped short at the thought of meeting Ruben. She bent down and picked up the excited cub, looking first at him and then at Ruben. She took a step closer to make sure that the two of them met properly.

"Little cub, this is Ruben." Selena murmured, pressing a kiss to Mako's cheek. "He's your brother. He is a lot of fun if you make him your friend."

"Ru..." Mako murmured, making Ruben chuckle.

"That's right," Ruben encouraged softly. "Telma and I brought you something too." Reaching into the satchel he'd brought, he pulled out a stuffed bear that Telma had woven and Ruben had stuffed with soft cotton and feathers. Once he was sure it was for him, Mako clutched it close with his new horse and his odd eyes seemed to sparkle with joy. He'd never received such things in his young life and he adored them and they formed the first foundation with his new siblings.

And while Mako was busy playing with the two new toys, Ruben smiled to his mother. "You look ecstatic, Ma."

Selena smiled at her son as he commented on how good she looked. She reached out and placed her hand on his forearm, patting it lightly as the sounds of rattling pots in the kitchen signified that the rest of the family had started on a feast.

"I told you not to worry about your Ma." Selena said with a smile, glancing towards Mako. "He completes something in my soul, Ruben. I was meant to be a mother. I know that I'll always be your mother, no matter what, but raising a cub is in my blood."
