Reading Books For Pleasure

Thanks, hon :rose: I started to watch some of the tv show and it was a little...hokey in places, so I was put off reading the books.

I'll start the first one as soon as I'm done with Forbidden Magic.

The TV show was just okay for me as a TV show. Compared to the books it was a shallow thing.

:rose:

I'm still wading through all 30 of JD Robb's books.

I love the JD Robb series, but I can only work though about 2 at a time then I have to switch to something else. :) and I'm terrible for reading books out of sequence! I read the last one before the first one so to speak.

Don't you just love Roarke?

What's not to love? :p I've read a lot of her stuff, but also out of sequence. (Mostly in the order I could find them.) So now I'm trying to fill in the cracks. I've read about four in the last month, but read other books like in the bath and stuff. I rarely read ONE book at a time. I've got a book in each bathroom and one by my bed and one by the couch . . . :p

A woman after my own heart!!:rose:

I'm really tempted to start the first four Dexter books. I purchased them about 3 years ago and never read them.

I'll be curious to see how you feel about them. I'm not sure I'll be able to read them without nightmares occurring. I don't like looking at things from the sociopathic POV. That really creeps me out. I am enjoying the series now that it's on a "free" channel that I get! I can't watch the opening sequence though. It's icky!

I recently read Melusine by Sarah Monette. It was supposed to be about a man dominating a man but it was really disappointing. It really meant a man abusing a man. Great. I was really glad to have done with it.

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak was really interesting. In fact, I went and got another book by the same author. He has an unusual style and creative ideas but the second book's ending (I Am The Messenger) just sucked for me and ruined the book.

:rose:

The last book I read was Red by Erica Spindler...It was good but was more romance then the mystery that I like...I haven't picked up a book for a while but still have 3 more Spindlers to read along with some Koontz and Kellerman..

btw furry this it dwb I just changed my id due to not wanting the X to know me on here...

Sorry I have not posted in the thread for a while..Just have not been in the mood to read..

I totally understand.

*HUG*

BTW, which Kellerman? I like the husband and wife but now I see a son of theirs is writing as well!

I had that conversation with my friend recently, she watches the show but never read the books, and she finds it a little disturbing. Now, to cut a long story short (before I go into ramble mode!) I love the idea of books being written from a killer's perspective. My latest work in progress has an ambigious hero who kills for survival and money, but from reading the first Dexter novel I've come to realize there is a huge gulf between killing for necessity and killing for pleasure.

Essentially, Darkly Dreaming Dexter was in parts funny, in parts very well written and in parts down right freaky. The first chapter was pure perfection, and then we got to the parts that really made me cringe (and I don't cringe easily) - I felt uncomfortable reading about the excitement, almost sexual excitement of him admiring another serial killer.

I couldn't finish the book to be honest.

So now I'm reading XXX Marks the Spot by Kathleen Lawless. It's an advanced reading copy I'm reviewing. It's a good idea, but I hate it when you an erotic scene and then an author starts using words like "pleasure palace" and "moistening V-spot". If it's an erotica they should use erotica words. Or maybe I'm being picky:rolleyes:

On my to be read pile in the next few weeks -

Advanced copies of Through the Veil - Shiloh Walker, Don't Turn Around - HUnter Morgan, Let the Night Begin - Kathryn Smith.

Wild Jinx - Sandra Hill

and of course a personal recommendation by our very own Shyguy68 - The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. :D

I like Johnathan Kellerman better..I have tried to read Faye's work but just can't get into it.I did see their son was writing too but have not read anything by him yet!

If you couldn't finish the book and it's a POV you are sort of into I KNOW I couldn't read it. Thanks for letting me know that!

Looks like you've got tons of good reads!

Yay!

I lot of people say that. I'm not sure why. I prefer Faye's books because there is a stable love relationship and it takes me into a Jewish Orthodox world I know little about. It has great stories and action just like her husband's books.

However as much as I like his books, his relationships are always on shifting ground. He mental horror is tough for me to deal with, though he's dialed that back in the latest volumes. I used to have to read him only in the day and something else at bedtime because his stuff was so dark. It really hits me where I live or where the abused child in my head lives.

I also noticed that James Lee Burke, one of my all time fav authors, his daughter, Alafair, is now writing. I've not read any of hers yet.

I need more time!

I loved the Dresden series! I am only on number 4 and I try to fit it in with the rest of my lighter reading pile. I just read Good calories, bad calories by Taubes and it was enlighting and made me not trust the governmental agencies (which is no surprise really) but did give me some insight into some nutrition info - which I needed. Now I am happily pounding thru Kim Harrisons, A Fistfull of Charms because I need fast and frivilous. Which will be followed by the bdsm selections and any other light book I can add before the next round of heavy nutrition books arrive on my doorstep!

I haven't read Jonathan for a while..I know he does use a lot of mental horror in his books..Or he did when I read them...

I have not read Burke..Will have to check him out...

I wish I had more time to read too!

James Lee Burke is GREAT for men and women. His descriptive writing is practically poetry but his books are also VERY violent and occasionally have great sex scenes. My fav series location of his is in and/or near New Orleans. New Orleans literature is a particular interest of mine.

The Neon Rain is the first of those.

But my fav book of his is in another series, In the Moon of Red Ponies it's one of the few books, I would joyfully read again and again.

I LOVE that Kim Harrison series but again the first book wasn't as good as the rest.

I think I just finished around book seven or so in the Dresden files.

Tall Dark & Dead is very Wiccan which kind of concerns me because I don't know enough about the culture to know what is bull and what is realistic. However it's been a fun read. So I'm grooving with it. I'll probably finish it tonight or tomorrow.

I'm struggling through this months book. I think you really need to read them in order, their's a lot that isn't making sense.

Oh no!

You didn't read the first one? Oops! That was one of our picks one month I know. I just assumed you had. I'm so sorry.

Let me tell you, though, IMO, the author doesn't explain a LOT of things well enough period.

I found this one far easier to read than the first one but there are holes in the story where background informations should have been imparted.

I was about to go look and see if everyone else had read the first one. But, quite frankly, I'm confused.

Long story short, girl has been abused and people want her power.

The trod upon males are more powerful than you'd expect.

Witch is the first worthy queen to come along in a looooong time and is slowly restoring the world to where it should be.

Ignore all the crap about the misspelled too "cute" names.

Ignore all the confusing crap about who is dead, half dead, alive and all that.
It's just unimportant to the central theme.

I'm being talked to by my son so I may not be making any sense.

:rose:

Yep, I finished it and DVS's latest Raw Anal Lust installment. That was hawt!

Now I shall start The Dead Girl's Dance by Rachel Caine.

Or maybe NOT it's book 2!

*gasp*

*mutters*

*goes to put book 1 on hold and then pick another book*

Thank you so much for the heads up..I am going to find the books and give them a try..I am always open to trying out a new author!
