Reading Books For Pleasure

Matthew Reilly is always on my must buy list. I read Temple back when I was 17 and it still remains one of my favourite books.

Temple is good. I like the "regular man becoming the hero of the day" thing that Race had going on.

I'm also a big fan of the sarcastic humor of Schofield in the Scarecrow books.

To be honest, I struggled through the first couple of chapters of 7AW, but once I got into it. Wowsers. Some of the ideas are amazing. And the ending to 6SS? Godfuckingshitdamnit. Cliffhangers make me cry!

But the sequel to the sequel will be out at Christmas 09 *squees and starts my list now*

I've also read the Twilight series several times. At this point, I'll just grab one of the books, open it to a random page and jump in. I was so "in love" with Edward that I could hardly read through the first part of New Moon. I never hated Jacob, though.

I'm HORRIBLE at returning books to the library. And,I'm studying to teach High School English. I have several books at home right now that I need to return that are weeks over due. Hmm....this may be a good idea for a new years resolution.

Have you tried half.com for buying books? It's not the best place to buy new books as they aren't well discounted. But, I can usually find books I really want to read for less than $5 including shipping. Which is much better than some of the late fees I've amassed.

I didn't hate Jacob either. Can't blame a guy for chasing, but sometimes I did just want to smack him and say "give it up already".

I mean, there is no competition where Edward is involved. :D

I'm hopeless at returning hired movies, AND borrowed books, so I have cut myself off. It's just not worth the grief!

I will check out half.com though, thanks! :)

Oh god, I know!!! I couldn't believe the ending!! Fortunately, MR put that interview in the back of the book. I enjoyed 6SS more than 7AW to be honest.
Jack West is a Indiana Jones for the modern day. Gotta love a modern day Indie. :D

LOL There were times I wanted to smack Edward - the whole brooding vampire thing sometimes grates on my nerves. Gimme a smart ass sarcastic wolf anyday.

Mmmhmm and it will be called "5 Greatest Warriors"

From the website: :D :D :D

THE FIVE WARRIORS

Having left readers desperately hanging at the end of his action-packed adventure, THE SIX SACRED STONES, Matthew Reilly returns with his biggest and fastest adventure yet, THE FIVE GREATEST WARRIORS.

The action begins right where THE SIX SACRED STONES left off...with our hero, Jack West Jr, falling into a fathomless abyss and his astonishing escape from certain death.

Now, with the end of the world fast approaching, Jack must rebuild the final pieces of the fabled “Machine”. But he is out of clues, out of leads...until he is presented with an ancient text about five unnamed warriors, great historical figures who were all in some way connected to the mysterious Machine...

A NEW QUEST

And so Jack and his loyal team set out to discover the identities – and the secrets – of THE FIVE GREATEST WARRIORS.

It is a singularly impressive list: from Moses to Genghis Khan and Napoleon, and to one most unlikely warrior. And who is the unknown “Fifth Warrior” who it is said will be there “at the end of all things”?

In SEVEN ANCIENT WONDERS, Matthew Reilly explored the mysteries of the Great Pyramid.

In THE SIX SACRED STONES, the astonishing link between Stonehenge and the Great Pyramid was examined.

In THE FIVE GREATEST WARRIORS:

* the explosive secrets of history’s greatest commanders will be revealed;
* our heroes will stage an extraordinary mission into the lair of a powerful villain to rescue their friend, Stretch;
* Jack West will race tsunamis (!!);
* the Earth will come face-to-face with the apocalypse;
* and not for a single moment does the action let up.

In it the story begun in SEVEN ANCIENT WONDERS and THE SIX SACRED STONES will reach its literally Earth-shaking climax at one of the most mysterious places on our planet.

From the deserts of Israel to the storm-lashed coasts of Japan, to the wastes of Mongolia and to the most mysterious island on Earth — this is what we have come to expect from Matthew Reilly: stupendous action, white-knuckle suspense, heroes to cheer for, and an adventure beyond imagining.

This is...THE FIVE GREATEST WARRIORS.

On Twilight:

The person I wanted to smack was Bella. OMG! He's so cute! And he treats me like shit! I LOVE him!

Vrs

OMG! He's so cute. He treats me well. We can only be friends. WTF???

LOL Well I write kink and I'm kinky...so I would say yes, she is kinky! and oh, she's married to a policeman? See now that explains it! I just thought she had wild fantasies about men in uniform... ;)

Well, I've seen more than a few that try to write kink but it seems just wrong the way they go about and the motivations they assign the the characters.

Her way of doing it seems more real or more my kind of flavor. It's two really strong people being kinky together because that's what they enjoy. I really love it. Of course it also has a bit of a romance type of vibe. She keeps it pretty mainstream too, it never gets into master/slave, pony play or anything too far to be mainstream commercial either.

I am sure that I read that she lives in Alabama, with her husband who is a policeman or state trooper or something and her two dogs. I bet they use his handcuffs sometimes!

Started reading New Moon last night..oh wow...another one hard to put down!

Which one is that? The last one?

I just finished Eat, Pray, Love. It was rather strange. Has anyone else read it? Would anyone like to discuss it?

I have heard others say the same thing so I look forward to reading it when I get to it...

It's about a woman who goes through a terrible two year divorce. (Been there but I had a child so it never ended until he fucking died, after treating the child like shit for eight years.)

She becomes depressed. (Been there, done that, a few too many times myself.)

Takes on an affair that is on again and off again. (Happily, I've not been there.)

She also talks to herself (who doesn't?) and "feels" things that help her somewhat, along with counseling and drugs, which we don't really hear anything about until later in the book, unlike the supernatural kind of inner speaking and so on.

She is so depressed and all that she can think of that would make her the slightest bit happy is to learn Italian even though she has no practical use for it. She just LOVES the language. (I must say I endorse this idea when you are depressed. Do something, however small that will make you happy even if it makes no sense at all.)

Get this, she is a thin blond. Cry me a fucking river folks. Oh and she MAKES A REALLY GOOD LIVING AS A WRITER!!! Watch me turn green with envy!!!

This is not supposed to be fiction either. This is supposed to be her real life.

So, anyway, she gets PAID to go to Indonesia and do an article about guru vacations. (GREEN with envy again!)

Then later she decides to go live in Italy, India and Bali each for three months or so? I can't remember the exact timing. She gets an ADVANCE that makes that possible on the book she will write about all this! (So jealous!)

Now, in Italy (GREEN!!!) she eats, sight sees and doesn't have sex. I'm all about those first two on the last one, HUH???

In India she goes to an Ashram and "prays" really meditates. There all manner of what I would call supernatural things occur within her, or perhaps I would just say she is a bit nuts.

In Bali, she studies with a guru and, eventually, falls in love.

What I kept thinking all through the book is, why couldn't she just live her life and figure things out? Why did she have to run around everywhere and meditate so much to see things that I feel are clear already but then I chose a very different path and that path included kids.

So I'm wondering. Am I just a bitch to see all this inner stuff as crazy? What do other people think about this? Yes, I know I'm a bitch to be so jealous. Traveling is just something I want to do more of, NOT the inner search thing tho. I like to meditate and want to do it more but I don't want to get all woo woo about it.

For the record, I think she is probably a very nice lady. You'd have a great time hanging with her and talking.

Now I also want to know did she ever have the child that the wise man saw in her future? Is she still with her last love from Bali?

It's an interesting book. She writes amusing thought provoking stuff.

So, I did not love this book... I really enjoyed True Blood and was sure I'd love the book. Like most readers, I generally prefer books over their film/television adaptations. This time was different.

Since you loved the series, FF, can I ask how you felt after the first book? I was underwhelmed and trying to decide if I should keep reading the series. The writing was less than spectactular and their were storylines/characters in the tv series completely absent from the book. I wonder if these are from the subsequent books or not present in the books at all.

I guess I'm just rambling. It's rare that I don't like a book, especially one including vampires. I was going to buy the series but now I'm not sure. Did you think the books got better as the series progressed? Or, did you know you liked it from the first read?

Oh well, time to start reading Heartsick anyway, huh?

Yep, I'm picking up my copy later this week.

I'm sorry you did not like the first book. I read the books before this white trash version of a tv show came out. So I like the books better, as I almost always do. If it had been the other way around, who knows? I really think you should consider the books and the TV show as two entirely different things.

I am liking the show somewhat. It's like a nasty car wreck I can't NOT watch but it also insults me. I live in the South. I have my whole life. I have relatives in that area and never once, while reading the books, did I picture all the characters as trashy freaks. Well, except the brother.

The accents are terrible fakes for the most part. The dig at home schoolers really pissed me off too.

That being said, in the show I liked Tara, Lafeyette, Jason's last nutty gf, and Rene. I didn't find them so appealing in the books. For the most part, I'm very turned off by the casting. I do like the lead actress though.

The trailer trash look to most of the male characters which is apparently in vogue right now, I see it on Dexter and many other shows these days isn't my flavor. Eric looks like he is a model from the cover of a romance novel and NOT like a former viking for real. *grr* Pam isn't what I had pictured either.

I liked the first book in the series. I just thought it was a little short. I wanted more.

SPOILER ALERT STOP READING HERE IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW:

I'll be glad when we get past the whole Bill thing and move into more interesting men for the lead. I never liked Bill. I don't like the casting either.

A lot of people love the book. I may see the movie. It may be one of those things where I enjoy the movie more. Yes, man certainly wans.

Yes, I've read it. I was intrigued by the time travel premise. The author certainly came up with a new take on it. I was ultimately disappointed in the book and the love story.

I felt the wife should have grieved, gone on with her life and loved someone else.

I hated the crap about him having to be nude and run all the time. The whole, I can't drive I car because I might time travel with little to no warning thing BUT, holding a baby? That's not a problem. KWIM? It just didn't jibe for me. I'd rather you wreck a car and possibly kill yourself than hurt or kill our baby, thank you very much.

It was a dark book. I didn't care for how dark.

The main thing I did like was that he got to know his daughter and vice versa even though he had died. At least she got closure even though I felt the wife never did.

I finished Eclipse last night..I sorta got to the point that I was not liking Bella that much....

I felt that way about her pretty quickly. I don't really like anyone except Jacob.

I felt that way about Bella towards the end of Eclipse. Fortunately, she redeemed herself a little in Breaking Dawn.

I'm reading Plum Lovin' by Janet Evanovich. Almost done. The scene with the porn movie is just freaking hilarious! :D

I LOVE those Evanovich books. Just the Plum books. Fantastic! The short ones are just perfect for a sexy night out with the husband at a hotel. After he has passed out from exhaustion. LOL!
