Reading Books For Pleasure

& I have read on Robert jordans blog that his last book in his Wheel of Time series will be out this year sometime.

Quoted from the Wikki page for the book:

A Memory of Light is the title for the twelfth and final book of the popular The Wheel of Time fantasy series written by American author Robert Jordan. The novel was incomplete as of the time of Jordan's death. On December 7, 2007, Tor Books announced that Brandon Sanderson has been chosen to finish writing the book.[1]

Scheduled for publication by Tor Books in Autumn 2009,[2] it is intended to conclude the series, which began in 1990 with The Eye of the World. On September 16, 2007, Robert Jordan died from amyloidosis.[3] Before his death, Jordan stated "I'm getting out notes, so if the worst actually happens, someone could finish A Memory of Light and have it end the way I want it to end." The decision to complete the book posthumously was made by his wife Harriet and Tor Books president Tom Doherty.[2] On September 27, 2007, the following was posted on Robert Jordan's official blog in regard to the future plans for the book:

[Robert Jordan] left some pretty detailed notes on what would happen. He, Harriet, and [others], all know the endings and secrets. There are both written notes and audio recordings of Jim [Robert Jordan] saying what happened. [4]

Robert Jordan repeatedly said that the main sequence would conclude with this book. He stated at a 2005 book-signing event that it was not possible for him to write two more coherent books in The Wheel of Time series, and that the twelfth book would therefore conclude the series.[5]

Brandon Sanderson has said in a December 19, 2007 interview that some parts of the book were nearly finished by Jordan, while others have only a couple of paragraphs to describe a twenty page scene. He confirmed that he has examined Jordan's outline but also commented that he has not yet had time to sift through all of Jordan's notes.[6] Through February 2008 Sanderson reread the entire series, posting his impressions of each book on his blog.[7]

It was confirmed at a panel at the 2008 World Science Fiction Convention that Jordan had completed 50,000 words of the book before he died, with the largest chunk of complete text being the prologue and the end. Whilst Sanderson is working to a target of 400,000 words by the end of December 2008[8] for the final book, Tor's editor Tom Doherty indicated the book could be closer to 600,000 words, which would necessitate the book being split into two smaller volumes. If this does happen, the volumes will be published as close together as possible. It is likely that Jordan's widow and editor, Harriet, will contribute some kind of foreword to the final volume.[9]

I'm not really much of a Wheel of Time fan (got stuck in the middle of book 3 and never finished it), but I love Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn trilogy, so I'd expect the final WoT book to be everything the fans are hoping for.

I am currentlt re-reading my Dresden Files books by Jim Butcher. Another good author in that genre is Kelly Armstrong (she writes about the same material as Kim Harrison and Laurel K. Hamilton , without Hamiltons usual 50 pages of plot, 250 pages of vampire porn, and 25 pages of plot wrapup)

Not the same ad Industrial fantasy, but World War Z by Max Brooks was also a excellent read. Both me and my brother loved that book

I have to second that. I love her books, they are always on my auto buy list. She's very good at creating a world, characters and a plot without layering it with tons of sex.

Reading for pleasure... what the hell is that?

Ohh I'll have to make a note of Kelly Armstrong. Coincedentally I just finished reading 'Princep's Fury', Jim's latest in the Codex Alera - I do love the Dresden Files too though, but am currently gutted that I'm going to have to wait another year for the last Alera book when I've got so many questions going round ym head about how it will all end!

Rocert Jordan bored me after the fifth or so book.

Generally I prefer to read series, there's just so much more in it for me as I can read pretty fast. I only hate when I catch up to a series and have to wait for the next book to be published, patience isn't a strong point of mine

I've read all the BAD books, mainly because SK is one of my heroines in the literary world. I like them - a lot. However, they are not as dark or as intense as her Dark Hunter books. In her full length BAD books there is not much sex - so if you are looking for hot, steamy sex you my be disappointed. But they have some great plots and are more action/adventure types.

Now, if you are looking for something steamy, I'd go with Jaid Black. Both are good but I'd go with Strictly Taboo.

Hope that helps some!

I enjoyed the BAD books too, but yeah, prefer the Dark Hunter books, Sherrilyn is a heroine of mine as well so it's nice to see someone else worship her hehe.

Another good series I've enjoyed so far is Lara Adrian's Midnight Breed. More vamps, yummy!

Me, too! But I can't get anybody else to read them...the romance fans don't like the BDSM angle, the fantasy fans are embarrassed by the covers (much less the actual content!), and the Laurell K. Hamilton and Anne Rice fans want their vampires... *sigh*

I love the Dresden Files (Jim Butcher's Codex Alera series is really good, too, but they're more high fantasy than urban - I heard him call them Roman Legion meets Pokemon in an interview once :) ) and the Hollows series, too. In fact, I've pretty much been squeeing over this entire thread! :D

Yep thats me too I read what makes me happy and sometimes it just doesn't fit into a real category. And Thank You FuryFury for starting this thread.
The hollows series is good I just had to get past the 2nd book to stop wanting to kick Rachel in the butt to pull her head out of her ass (all of her helpless woe is me crap was making me a little nuts) now they are getting good.
Barb and J.C Hendee have a pretty good sries out it starts with Dampir it's more fantasy than urban though. If you like fantasy try David Eddings work.
There is nothing better than a good read, hopefully with chocolate. ok maby realy good sex.
Reg

I have the plot outline sketch done and I've drafted some character treatments. The first chapter is completed, but I'm pretty sure it sucks. Not positive, but pretty sure.

Now you sound like my Daughter she thinks her stuff is bad and no one can convince her otherwise She's wrong and I bet you are as well. I hear its like anything else the more you write the better it gets, as I can't write I'm just pulling an opinion out of thin air and nether body parts here.

Aww! Thanks! It's been my pleasure!

I've enjoyed Eddings in the past!

I agree, good book, good sex, chocolate or red hots, purring cat and good really sex!

I know!!! He's pulled so many surprises in that series already, I just can't wait to see how he wraps it all up. And that last little scene at the end of Princeps with Alera??? Yikes, what a cliffhanger! (Although maybe not quite as bad as the last one; waiting for Princeps was torture...and I really hope I'm not giving somebody any ideas with that statement, because that would just be mean.)

That's exactly why I love that series; I started reading them right around the time Laurell K. lost her mind and turned Anita Blake from a badass, sexy chick into a totally emo, whiny bimbo who can't even own up to her own sexuality (or, apparently, fire a gun), so it was refreshing to have a main character who actually showed a little growth as a person. :D

Love him, especially the Elenium series (The Diamond Throne/The Ruby Knight/The Sapphire Rose), but I don't usually like it when he writes a second series set in the same world. The whole time I was reading the Malloreon, I just kept asking myself, "Haven't I read this somewhere before?" And then I'd go back and re-read the Belgariad, and realize that he might have changed the setting and a character or two, but the plot was almost identical...and then the same thing happened with the Elenium and the Tamuli. But maybe that's just me; at any rate, I like the original series a lot!

I know he tends to repeat, I think it was even part of the plot in The Malloreon. A bit of, 'well we didn't fix it right so we have to repeat all of the turning points'. But his sense of humor in the books is great. I loved
The Redemption of Althalus, but hated the last book of the Dreamers.
I am saving Princeps Fury but I'd better get to reading it so I can have a decent conversation about it. I'm happy to have found this thread since my 29 and 21 year old sons moved out I am the only one in the house who reads this genre of books. Of course I'll read packing slips if I go too long without a good book.

Wow....people like me...don't feel so bad now...

I've really been into the paranormal romances lately (gasp)! But I have to say, I def prefer my heroines to be strong independent women, humor isn't bad either, rather than weeping lilies waiting for the big strong man to save her....ugh. hehe Not that I have anything against strong men. One of my favorite series is JD Robbs "in death" series (aka Nora Roberts) Eve is a kick ass bitch cop...solving homicides in New York based 50 years in the future. I also like MaryJanice Davidson...she does the "undead" series...and I have to say, she's an author that makes me laugh out loud when I'm reading her books. Haha Betsy the Vampire Queen....pretty much says it all. She also started a series about a mermaid named Fred. I like Katie MacAlisters dragon sept series a little more than her vampire series....hmmm something about sexy shapeshifting dragons.....

Those are some of my older sister's favorite books, especially the JD Robb ones. Have you tried the one she "co-authored" with Nora Roberts? I forget the title, but supposedly it was pretty good, too. And the Betsy books are in my "to read" pile, but I haven't gotten there yet...

It's called Remember When. JD Robb and Nora Roberts are the same person, she just writes urban fantasy under Robb and her romances under Nora Roberts. :rose: It is a good book, well worth a read and surreal to read a book by two authors written by the same person. :d

I have to say I'm a big fan of Eve Dallas. :D

She also started a series about a mermaid named Fred.

I read one of the books in the mermaid series recently and laughed my socks off!

I'm still ploughing through Anya Bast's Witch Fire but got sidetracked by a security studies book.

I'm now reading, The Way Nature Made Him, the story of the boy who was raised as a girl. It's not fiction.

:rose:

I like Eve Dallas too.....but I LOVE Roarke.....I want one for my birthdat, irish brogue and all

I finally got Breaking Dawn finished today..It was a good book..Admittedly though I was ready for it to be over a while before it was..

I still am an Edward Fan..Even though Jacob really looks out for Bella I still like Edward.LOL

Has anyone here read Doris Lessing? I've now read two of her short stories for school and loved them. "To Room Nineteen" is profound. It's a rare treat when required reading is so enjoyable.

Never heard of these books. What genre is it? What's the story about?

Ha!

I know that feeling... I tend to read mine on the bus sometimes, or my studyguides. I like to watch people who try and take a peek at what I'm reading, then get all confused.

Lehringer's Principles of Bio-whatnow?

muahahahahahahaha
