Reading Books For Pleasure

no. i used to YEARS ago. when i read books as if it was crack. then one day i realized almost all the stories are the same, just a slightly different scenario. i don't think there is a truely original idea out there. it all started to blend.
i mostly stick to autobiographies, biographies, history, and information now. that is , when i do actually read a book.

Wow. That is really sad to me. Novels are one of my prime joys in life but if you are happy with what your read that's cool too.

Excerpts that touched me deeply from, The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein:

"Drivers are afraid of the rain," Denny told us. "Rain amplifies your mistakes, and water on the track can make your car handle unpredictable. When something unpredictable happens you have to react to it; if you're reacting at speed, you're reacting too late. And so you should be afraid."

"I'm afraid just watching it it," Eve said.

"If I intentionally make the car do something, then I can predict what it's going to do. In other words, it's only unpredictable if I'm not . . . possessing . . .it."

"So you spin the care before the car spins itself," she asked.

"That's it! If I initiate the action -- if I get the care a little loose--then I know it's going to happen before it happens. Then I can react to it before even the care knows it's happening."

I had always wanted to love Eve as Denny loved her, but I never had because I was afraid. She was my rain. She was my unpredictable element. She was my fear. But a racer should not be afraid of rain; a racer should embrace the rain. I, alone, could manifest a change in that which was around me. By changing my mood, my energy, I allowed Eve to regard me different. And I can say that I have experiences a glimpse of mastery and I know what I have to work toward.

To live every day as if it had been stolen from death, that is how I would like to live. To feel the joy of life, as Eve felt the joy of life. To separate oneself from the burden, the angst, the anguish that we all encounter every day. To say I am alive, I am wonderful, I am. I am. That is something to aspire to. When I am a person, that is how I will live my life.

If I ever find myself before I firing squad, I will face my executioners without a blindfold, and I will think of Eve. Of what she said. It is not the end.

She died that night. Her last breath took her soul, I saw it in my dream. I saw her soul leave her body as she exhaled, and then she had no more needs, no more reason; she continued her journey elsewhere, high in the firmament where soul material gathers and plays out all the dreams and joys of which we temporal beings can barely conceive, all the things that are beyond our comprehension, but even so, are not beyond our attainment if we choose to attain them, and believe that we truly can.

Hmm

I can't imagine giving up on my Books(Crack).
If you look at life a certain way it's all the same plot line, we are born, we live, then we die, it's more the things along the way that make each of us unique.
I think that's the way it is with fiction as well. But then I read for mild escapism it's much better to me than TV.
It's true though it's mental crack, better that than other addictions I could have, I just wish I had more time for my books.

Some people yes, but probably not most people. I've found the people here to be very open about their info.

I'm in does anyone want to trade books in Ohio? or we could ship via media mail it takes awhile to get there but it's cheap.

And FurryFury I loved the Excerpts from The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein.
I'm going to get that book now of course fast cars and racing are two of my favorite things.

Cool!

I've been trying to read a couple of books but they are just NOT doing it for me. I'm about ready to quit them and try something else.

Don't you just hate it when you just can not get into a book? I hope you can find something good to hold your attention soon!

Alright. I've finished two books today because I was so tied up waiting for the kids. Now I've found a third book I can enjoy.

:rose:

Have been looking for ages for something similar to Eat, Pray Love which I thoroughly enjoyed. I want something inspirational that makes me consider things in a similar way that that and ''Yes Man'' did. (I know its a movie now with he who I can't stand as the main character, but the book was wonderful and the message behind it stuck with me).

I did try Paulo Coehlo butI kinda lost interest

Anyway, have had a break from my usual Dean koontz type reads and just finished 'Broken'' by Ilsa Evans. When I started reading it I hadn't completely appreciated what it was about but because it brought backsome very personal memories for me and not good one, it gripped me. Although harrowing at times I enjoyed it.

Yesterday I started The History of Love by Nicole Krauss which is just beautiful.

Afterwards....either The Language of Others by Clare Morrall or A Town Like Paris by Bryce Corbett. At which point I may take a short return to the dark side with some koontz.

:)

Sounds good!

I couldn't get into Yes Man at all and I tried.

I posted a lengthy thing on what I thought about Eat, Pray, Love on here. It was, interesting but irritating to me.

I am a book slut, and I'm ok with it. There are few things more pleasurable than an intensely good read. Finishing that book, no matter how long or short is always painful for me. I do comfort myself by reading my favorites over and over. It is nice to know that I am not alone in this.

thanks!

Yes, it's great to know we are not alone and to share what you've loved and what you haven't!

OMG Furry I am shocked!:D

Its funny how one mans book is another mans poison eh

I just loved Yes Man and laughed aloud in appropriate places. I also blame that book for leading me to saying yes more and ultimately ending up here in Australia!

My mum loved it too and offers it to anyone she knows who is feeling low *laugh*

And i just adored Eat,Pray, Love. I savoured every page. Putting off reaching the end for as long as I could.

Am gonna go look at your review. I know a few people it irritated!

It is, so far anyway. The title is The Night Villa by Carol Goodman.

:rose:

That is good...let me know if it is worth a read.

I still have not picked up the book I have laying here to read...Need to get back into reading. :rose:

I love sharing thoughts about books and so one even if one doesn't agree with my thoughts it's fun to find out what others think. We can't all be the same. Seeing it from another POV is interesting.

I'm about half way through. I'll probably finish it today. It's very interesting to me. It's set in Pompeii. They are trying to use new technology to read burnt and buried scrolls. There is a lot of interpersonal stuff going on. The time periods are mirroring each other somewhat too.

:rose:

I'm reading Kiss of a Demon King by Kresley Cole.

OMG, it's very BDSM themed:cattail: It's giving me ideas! lol
