Danny Raine took a deep breath of free air. He hadn't smelled it in five years, ever since he'd been locked up at the age of seventeen for selling marijuana and cocaine at his high school. But now his time was served, he was a free man again, and he had his whole life ahead of him.
The clothes he had worn into prison barely fit him. The pants were tight around his waist, the buttons on his shirt stretched out. He'd been a skinny kid when he'd gotten to prison; he was now a well-built man.
He smiled as he spotted his mother in the same old station wagon. He headed towards her. She got out and ran to him, hugged him, kissed him. Her son was coming home at last.
"Where's Autumn?" Danny asked.
"Danny, it's noon on a tuesday, your sister's in school."
"Oh... God, of course she is," Danny replied. "She just had a birthday, huh?"
"She turned eighteen a month ago."
They pulled onto the freeway. It was about an hour drive from the federal penitentiary to the Raine family home. When they arrived, Danny went up to his old room. Nothing had changed, but he hardly recognized it. Maybe he hardly recognized himself. He sat down on the old bed. Maybe it was because the room was clean for once. He looked around, uncomfortable.
His mom took him shopping for new clothes; he was too big now for the clothes he wore in high school. When they came home, he saw a new car in the driveway.
"Is that Autumn's ride?"
"That was her present for getting a full ride to UC-Berkeley."
"Wow, good for her," Danny replied, and then his face lit up as the front door opened and he saw his little sister for the first time in five long years.
