Sad songs

Oh Daddy by Fleetwood Mac. This song tugs at my heart. It’s bittersweet for me because of a strained relationship.

Something I Can Never Have by Nine Inch Nails - When I’m feeling “teen-angsty”

Moonshadow by Cat Stevens - because memories 💔

Ohfuck! You kinda nailed it with these three. Never listened to that Fleetwood Mac close but it does get me dusty. They have so many sad ones. I am a big Silver Springs fan and it is a pretty sad end of relationship song.

Anyone who knows me knows what a big Mark Kozelek, Sun Kil Moon, Red House Painters fan I am. And yes I know he can be a pretty awful person but he has 100s of songs that can make grown men cry. This is a cover of the Modest Mouse song Ocean Breathes Salty. You will be crying during first verse.

Your body may be gone, I'm gonna carry you in
In my head, in my heart, in my soul
And maybe we'll get lucky and we'll both live again
Well I don't know
I don't know I don't think so

IDCWYS—this 70s song has staying power.

Baby Come Back - Player

Baby come back, yeah, any kind of fool could see
There was something in everything about you
Baby come back, you can blame it all on me
I was wrong, and I just can't live without you, no

I mean I just have always fucking loved this song. Does not get me choked up or anything but yeah I get it.

If these lyrics can't depress you, what will:

"Ten, nine, eight, six, five, four, three, two, one, zero"
I'm hiding in the corner
Of an overgrown garden
Covering my body in leaves
And trying not to breath
All my childhood dreams
Are bursting at the seams
And dangling around my knees
I've been deformed by emotional scars
And the cancer of love has eaten out my heart
I've been stripped bare and nobody cares
And all the people I looked up to are no longer there
All desires have been denied to put me in this state of mind
Another year older and what have I done
My aspirations have shriveled in the sun
I'm crippled by guilt
Blinded by science
I've been waiting for tomorrow all of my life
"....working, keep talking."
"....working, keep talking."
"....working, keep talking."
"....working, keep talking."
All desires have been denied to put me in this state of mind
Another year older and what have I done
My aspirations have shriveled in the sun
I'm crippled by guilt
Blinded by science
I've been waiting for tomorrow all of my life
I've been filled with useless information
Spewed out by papers and radio stations
I've been hounded by fairweather friends
Sowing the seeds for my discontent
Life is like a sewer
And I'm trying to wade thru her
I threw in my money and made my wish
But sleeping boys catch no fish
All desires have been denied to put me in this state of mind
Another year older and what have I done
My aspirations have shriveled in the sun
I'm crippled by guilt
Blinded by science
I've been waiting for tomorrow all of my life
"....working, keep talking."
"....working, keep talking."
"....working, keep talking."
"....working, keep talking."
(repeating)
All my childhood dreams
Are ?sinking? round my knees
My mind has been polluted
And my energy diluted
My mind has been polluted
And my energy diluted
My mind has been polluted
And my energy diluted
My mind has been polluted
And my energy diluted
My mind has been polluted
And my energy diluted
My mind has been polluted
And my energy diluted

These Days by Jackson Brown will bring me to tears every goddamn time I hear it. The Nico version is good too and have heard lots of versions. Paul Westerbergs is great too. But I think this is the best. Maybe cause he wrote it. I believe when he was like 17 or something ridiculous.

Dont confront me with my failures
I have not forgotten them

I had an unrequited love for over a decade. Mutual friends still say he loved me but just couldn’t admit it. In my mid-twenties I had Les Mis on loop: https://youtu.be/VjfmP7h3gBw on loop.

Then when Wicked came out, this song made me sob every time: https://youtu.be/KvoEqPHsDIw

Eventually I started to let go with Adele: https://youtu.be/hLQl3WQQoQ0
And I did…

Nice. Good choices.

I love Adele. She is a once in a lifetime singer. She can typically make me happy and sad at the same time. Happy tears? I dont know but this song is a good example. Thank you.

Patsy Cline - 12 Greatest Hits

"Walkin' After Midnight"
"Sweet Dreams (Of You)"
"Crazy"
"I Fall to Pieces"
"So Wrong"
"Strange"
"Back in Baby's Arms"
"She's Got You"
"Faded Love"
"Why Can't He Be You"
"You're Stronger Than Me"
"Leavin' on Your Mind"

I get it. I am like that with a lot of the singers I post but try to limit to one or so. Patsy deserves to be an exception. I like Fall To Pieces the most. Crazy is hard to fucking beat.

Really fucking tough picking a sad Drag The River song because they are all sad. This is near the top. Maybe one of their few songs to not mention booze.

Beautiful and Damned - Drag The River

Sometime this house feels so lonely
Then when you're right next to me
I overheard someone leavin'
You're a sad little girl

Tommy Bolin - Dreamer

Tommy died at 25 in 1976. This is from his first solo album. Glenn Hughes sings the last verse, uncredited, and it is the chilling part as Tommy would be gone soon after.

Dreamer Lyrics
Halfway gone, and halfway back
You're always dreaming' 'bout what you lack
You're takin' your time from your busy day
To sit by the track and watch the train roll away

(Chours)
Dreamer I know what you're thinkin'
I can see it in your face
Maybe before you were happy
But now your thoughts aren't of this place

(Chorus)

You've begun to change now baby, I don't see
Oh but I know you well and it's clear to me
You think chains hold you here now baby, but they don't exist
You don't have to stay mama, I won't insist

(Chorus)

So take the train today, and don't look back again
Live the dreams you have, don't dwell on what has been
Your future's brighter now, there's brighter days ahead
Any sad farewell words, better left unsaid

(Chorus)

Glenn(partial chorus)

Maybe before you were happy, but now your thoughts aren't of this place
I only wish you were with me, someone like you can't be replaced.

Is there anything sadder than Scott Hutchinson and Frightened Rabbit? No. His death and they way he spelled it out in song is something I cant unhear.

I Wish I Was Sober

My love you should know
The best of me left hours ago so
Shove it right into my mouth and let me smolder
Fallout and the damage done
I can't un-sing the things I've sung
Still not giving up though
I wish that i was sober

I may take a second pass through this thread after I buy new speakers. Some videos are very staticky. Meanwhile, I have some:

Townes van Zandt: Marie

Chieftains and Gillian Welch, or anyone who covers this folk song: Katie Dear/Silver Dagger

Gillian Welch, another old folk song: Wind and Rain/Two Sisters

10,000 Maniacs: Dust Bowl

Rebekah del Rio: Llorando (Roy Orbison's Crying)

Nick Cave and Kylie Minogue: Where The Wild Roses Grow

Nicole Blackman with Golden Palominos: Victim (spoken story)

Anything by Portishead. They don't do happy music. Somewhat randomly, here's SOS

The Linda Thompson song I want to link but can't find is Many Dreams Must Fly Away, with Betsy Cook. From the liner notes I saw many years ago, they sang it once late night in a bar. It's my favorite a capella performance. Sisters is about two wives of a Muslim man who dumps both for a younger woman.

Simon & Garfunkel, the Everly Brothers and Stephen Merritt's bands Magnetic Fields and Gothic Archies also have some sad songs.

somehow an angry smiley is above the post. I can't delete it. Here's another for balance. :)
