Sarah Palin

Among the reasons listed by the press that Palin is not qualified for high office and McCain showed bad judgement in nominating her:

She's admitted to having smoked marijauna.

Excuse me?
Listed by the press (who are in a feeding frenzy and will latch on to anything), not listed by the average AH zeitgeist.

Anybody seen my bong?

I've never tried marijuana. I'm one of very few people of my generation (born in 1958) who can say this. It's not a moral stance; I'm just too big of a control freak to be able to give myself over to a substance. (Obligatory sexual reference: I think I could probably give myself over to a person, but people can think and talk and respond to safewords, so that's not as scary. :) )

Fine, whatever.

I'm not sure it this is what drove you off but I want to say I wasn't implying that you are a troll with the 'poo' thing. I was just trying to maintain some levity. Perhaps I missed the mark on that.

I liked it.

The music was so good - I could see the notes with my eyes closed.

I haven't since college but I'd do it again just for that.

*smiles dreamily*
I tried smoking, and it didn't do anything for me, but brownies, for me, have the effect that others apparently get from smoking. I had a couple of experiences somewhat like yours from brownies. Very dreamy and pleasant and floaty.

Though once, I mixed that with alcohol, and the result was very, very scary. I hallucinated and had a drawn-out anxiety attack. Obviously I'm not going to try that ever again.

If nothing else, McCain sure has injected some DRAMA and motivated millions to comment on this selection

He has the Newspapers, TV Commentators, Online Forums buzzing about Palin like no other choice could have (well Ron Paul would have generated excitement)

He even has propelled an unheard of book into the Immediate Best Sellers List --yeah, the Biography of Palin

No, it was accusing me of using a 'strawman' argument. Something I try to avoid assiduously.

Tell me then, if The Founders put together such a perfect system, why is your country in such a mess?

My answer is the people that use that system, that tool. There are too many short sighted, selfish and greedy people in positions of responsibility. They are using the tool without care or ethics.

Something that will happen with any system or tool as long as humans remain human.

Another thing to keep in mind, sad as it is, is that there's a real possibility that she could become the de facto president without McCain dying. I've seen it too many times that men his age starts losing their marbles to senility. It can happen pretty fast, often after an unrelated illness, heart attack or surgery. And noone but those closest around them will notice at first. Who runs the country then if something like that happens mid-term?

In this case, shouldn't we be tearing apart Cindy McCain? Think Nancy Reagan and Eleanor Roosevelt...

ETA - I tried it (and inhaled) and I liked it, and if I were not subject to drug tests today - not to mention an arrest would not be good...nearly 50 and I am still hoping for legalization.

But I get so relaxed that if you tossed a live hand grenade in my lap my only reaction would be "Oh wow!" and a giggle.

This is exactly why "marijuana initiative" is a contradiction in terms. :D

Just when I thought some of this shit was getting too absurd to be topped, the Heath family (Sarah's parents) released this photo...

I may be broke but I'm not flat-busted

What's next? Hilary in this shirt from T-Shirt Hell?

Barack wearing a shirt that says "Once you go black you'll never go back."????

John McCain doing ads for Viagra and Cialis?

This is too much.

And, BTW... why the FUCK did mom and dad think releasing that picture was a good idea?

OMG did they really do it... on purpose???

That is the story according to where I saw the pic... I must admit a little question about that. As Imp said, a cousin or a old classmate looking for their fifteen minutes? OK. Mean, but I see it. But Mom and Dad??????

Suggested shirts for John McCain?

She has admitted it but said that she "didn't like it."

Personally, I think this is a non-issue except for two things:

1) She is running with the party that likes to scream bloody murder about this kind of thing and they are currently betraying all of their past positions by ignoring her use. I would like to think it takes Obama's past of the table... but it doesn't, because look how long they managed to avoid the experience attacks after nominating someone less experienced than Obama . . .

Can you tell me how many bills Dem legislators and congresscritters have introduced to repeal marijuana prohibition in the past 25 years, how many roll call votes Pelosi and Dem speakers in legislatures have called on this issue, how many Dem pols at any level have run on a repeal platform, how many Dem party platforms at the state or national level have called for it? If someday you ever get into the double digits with those counts, c'mon back and I'll endorse this little riff against "repugs."

Most insightful comment on this thread!

Says a lot about this thread. :D

As long as nobody posts anything in support of a Republican

In otherwords BULLSHIT!

I beg to differ.

You didn't know Colly. She was a die-hard conservative - the real kind - and her comments and insights were welcome, but that was because she was smart enough not to believe all the bullshit that the republicans spewed, and would do her own research.

I suggest you do the same, and perhaps your political opinions, though different, might be respected.

eta: I didn't like her to begin with, and the more I learn, the less I like her. From BoingBoing:

Time Magazine says that when Sarah Palin took office as mayor, she approached the town librarian and asked how to go about banning books from the town library:

[Former Wasilla mayor] Stein says that as mayor, Palin continued to inject religious beliefs into her policy at times. “She asked the library how she could go about banning books,” he says, because some voters thought they had inappropriate language in them. “The librarian was aghast.” The librarian, Mary Ellen Baker, couldn’t be reached for comment, but news reports from the time show that Palin had threatened to fire her for not giving “full support” to the mayor.

It's a different time and I doubt anything would change. I have little faith in some people. :(
Just rattlin a few cages for fun :D

What does actually sponsoring legislation have to do with what I said????

Have we so quickly forgotten how absolutely irate one party was over Mr. Clinton and his admitted drug use? They LOVE to hammer people on this kind of thing.

(BTW, not talking about the "I didn't inhale" bullshit. I have to admit, that was something I really disliked.)

Times have changed, but some people will always see a double standard by one group and never their own.

I have not once made the claim that my or anyone's system is perfect. The claim that the system is perfect if very easy to argue against and dismiss. And you are arguing against that claim even though I have not made it. That is what a strawman argument is. I am sorry but it doesn't look like you are even trying to avoid it casually much less assiduously.

You put forth that the idea of difuse power was impractical. My gov't is not perfect but it has managed to survive for 200 years. So it isn't quite accurate to talk about that particular idea like it's some pipe dream.

What we have is imperfect. Whatever we replace it with will also be imperfect. I'll freely, gladly stipulate that. Do not argue against the claim that anarchism is perfection because I am not making that claim.

Don't you agree that we should all be trying to improve the current system? Don't you think we should all be diligently trying to create something better? Isn't that why we're all having this discussion in the first place?

You want to dismiss ideas that won't give us perfection. You also claim perfection is impossible. Therefore, any new idea should be dismissed. Why then would you even engage in political discussion if you consider every political idea to be useless?

Rob's idea of government is to stroke his cat, sip tea, and compose poems for every national problem or crisis.
