Jessie Curry
As quickly as the wall was built was as quickly it came tumbling down. The kiss did it for her. No, it wasn’t a kiss. It was a cosmic force that came crashing down on her and took her away into another world at light speed. One that she had never known but had always had hoped and dreamt.
Jessie stood immobilized and seeing stars as Chase’s soft lips took her breath away. She leaned in for more but he backed away so quickly leaving her dizzy and confused and wondering if she had imagined it all. The soft moan escaping her blushing lips confirmed otherwise.
He stood over her with his green eyes questioning and mouth moving. Jessie couldn’t hear a thing. It took a few long moments for the words to reach her. Then the realization hit her. Chase wanted to leave. Humiliation kicked in as Jessie’s heart fell to her stomach as the tears started to well up blinding out the soft question in his eyes. Control, control, control yourself, Jessie. Don’t let him get to you.
A switch clicked on. Anger seethed in. Her usually brown eyes turned into a boiling black pot of oil. Somehow, he had sweet talked his way into her house, into her kitchen, and kissed her. And now he wants to leave? This is it, the last straw. The last time he will play with her emotions.
“Yes, I think you better.”
Chase jumped back from the impact of her low and harsh tone spewing between gritted teeth. His bewildered look was lost in the rage of her madness. Jessie almost knocked him backwards as she passed him and led him to the door. All Chase could do was follow in a daze. Had he mistaken her? What went wrong? Was it something he said?
Jessie opened the door with a flourish. Her jaw was locked in angry determination. Chase walked slowly, stopped before her and opened his mouth to say something but changed his mind. As soon as his second foot landed on her wooden deck, the door slammed behind him making him scramble quickly to his lonely car.
The night was long, too long. Jessie stomped around the house in her pajamas, muttering incoherently, and cursing Chase. She tried to read a book to settle her mind. But it didn’t work. Her thoughts churned and replayed the night’s events. The way he was looking at her. Speaking to her. Touching her. She was sure he was interested. Until the kiss. The kiss changed everything.
Well, hell hath no fury like the woman scorned. This is the last time; Jessie will allow him to play with her emotions. Sometime during the wee morning hour, Jessie’s eyes dreaming of his soft lips.
