I just find it hard to believe that politicians would do anything underhanded.
R Nitelight, I am sorry you see it this way. I have always equated politics with underhandedness. Of course, that's always how I've seen things done. You have to realize that politicians are smooth talkers, and smooth do-er's, always have been, always will be.

Pretty sure that was sarcasm, babe.

Wait a minute. Were you being sarcastic too? ;)

My brain is too tired for rhetorical muddles. :p

Calm down Dixie baby

Flagg, your anti-American rhetoric is stupid.

Sorry, I would go and on about how shrill you sound condeming half a continent and one third of a billion people because of what you see on TV or because you once got a quarter-pounder with no pickels, but I'm too tired, and you're too unconvincing. Your constant "American is a big dumb place" posts are a big, dumb yawn, (not to mention insulting) and I'm happy to leave my commentary to "stupid". You big doody-head.

Dixon, Dixon - why does it always have to be you that brings the tone down to this silly playground level. Why are you constantly on the defensive? If you had any sense you would realise that its the american "society" that I freely criticise and not the american "people". The election that your "society" has just inflicted on the world is symbolic of a nation that has gone completely mad. I mean fuck - just look around you, look at the fucking news. Ballot boxes being discovered hidden in churches, ballot papers being changed from draft versions, an election run by the media. I know that you look at all these things and think - "What fucking sort of country is this?". What you have difficulties with is the fact that the criticism is coming from me. A non-american. A Brit. The civil war was a long time ago - about time you let it drop don't you think. As for insinuating that my conclusions and thoughts are born from watching fucking Ricki lake - well, that's just insulting my intelligence.

Can you stand up and say that America is not fundementally flawed? I don't want to know about how many types of pickle you can get at a Burger Joint, or about how high your buildings are, or about how freedom of speech is absolut in your country alone.

Fuck - to be honest I had no intention of starting a "I hate america thread" because to be honest they really bore me too. When I commented on this "election" I wasn't using it as a means of getting at you. A group of americans can go on about how fucked things are in Florida and raise questions about corruption etc. and that's fine with you. But then I come in to the picture and say "yeah it is fucked up and isn't it weird how low a turn-out there is in the US". Because I'm not american I'm not allowed to criticise because it hurts your feelings. You were brought up to "love your country". I guess you can criticise your own family but a stranger can't. Sorry.

As for the suoperiority complex - it was a joke. There was a little smillie just in case ya didn't realise. Aren't you a comedian?

So tell me - where in this thread have I insulted your country?

I think that is pretty well said, Flagg

Flagg, I am also amazed sometimes. You see, I come from a pretty fucked up place with a pretty dark history of things vile and unpleasant. All South Africans do. But we are at least able to acknowledge the faults in our society - afterall any reform or betterment must be preceded by at least an acknowledgement that things could / ought to be better. That is a threshhold requirement.

Now in South Africa we were able to deal with the faults and overcome them to achieve betterment. I know that many Americans on this BB feel the same way - thats (at least) one of the reasons to caste a vote in an election - therein lies the paradox.

So Flagg, I share your frustration with blinkered patriotism. It certainly seems to indicate that loyalty rather than intelligence is the dominant force motivating behaviour. As I said, this isn't the case with all Americans, and myopic patriotism isn't unique to the US either - hey, look at all the Japanese Kamakazi pilots. Unfortunately though, patriotism without thought seems like absolute stupidity to me.

Wasn't it Oscar Wilde who said "patriotism is the way of the wicked"??

I'm in no position to determin if it is or not.

However I will say, that I can see where Flaggs going. And before I say this, know that I' by ni means looking down on America. I for one, love the country. I really do. There's as many good things there as there are bad. Like everywhere else.

But I must admit, that to most Europeans, this election has looked a little more like a Hollywood movie, than an actual election.
many I know has just shaken their heads in disbelief about it, and wondered why it is like that.

of course this is partly because elections are so much different here on our side of the pond.

I most admit that, from what I've seen from the US elections, I've been happy that I've not been the one to who had had to make a decision about who's gonna be the next US president.
I wouldn't know BS from fact, when it's come to your candidates.

What is a little frightening though. Is the impact US elections has on the rest of the free world.
It's been said that a lot of issues has been purely domestic in this election, and thus do not have an effect on the rest of the world.

Wrong again. If anybody have seen the currency market. Oh boy there isn't one stabil currency in europe right now. And there won't be until a President is elected.
And that's just the small stuff.

Ah well let's see how it goes. :)

Can't we all get to the important issues. PANTIES!!!!

Slut_boy, what did you DO with those panties I left in Florida, that you found? It turns out I left TWO pairs down there. If they are the red crotchless silk-mesh, you can keep them as evidence in the Bush vote-fixing investigation. But I want the shiny purple satin panties back. Gotta cover-up my dampness, for the job interview. Can't show up looking all sloppy like THIS now, can I?

I want those panties back TODAY, to cover myself up. :) :)

I've been reading a lot about how the rest of the world is viewing this election -- and I tell you, part of me is right there with them. The last few days have had a dreamy quality. Every time I watch the news I have this sinking "This can't be happening" feeling. But that's just knee-jerk. Let's see if I can help some of the International group here...

The U.S. President isn't truly elected until next month, when the Electoral College meets. In past U.S. Elections the counts all took just as long as they're taking now (more or less), but the results were so clear we were able to announce them right away. The results here are just too close to call, so we're not calling them just yet.

There's a reason the Electoral College meets a month after the popular vote -- because of exactly what's happening right now. It's a big country, and there are a lot of votes to count, and when it's this close we have certain rules to follow. So, you see, this isn't really a delay.

Still, it is disconcerting, to all of us, because it so rarely happens, and we aren't used to it. The last time this happened was 112 years ago, and it took four months to innaugerate the new President. But he was innaugerated, peacfully, and the business of running country went on.

America is not a Democracy, really, it's a Republic that uses regulation to enforce democracy, and every once in a while we get a glimpse at the machinery of the Republic. It's a big damn machine, but it's working, and having to watch the gears spin for a week shouldn't be cause for alarm.

Dear Flag (and fellow Brits)

We beat you twice. (American Revolution, War of 1812)

We helped you twice. (WW1, WW2)

Now if you could just learn how to speak the langauge, we might make you a State.

Now we US citizen can talk about our politics but we prefer you to keep a low profile.

After all we think your Figure Headed Powerless Queen is kinda of funny. We also think the Prince looks really funny.

But we don't hold it against you.

Thanks for the Beatles and the Drug War.

Dear Flagg (and fellow Brits),

Johnny Ringo watches John Wayne movies in his underwear and thinks WWII was the best football game he ever saw. He wouldn't know how to express a non-jingoistic thought if it bit him in his red, white and blue balls. Please use tiny, tiny words when responding to him and speak loudly so he can understand you over the din of crunching Cheetos.
