Star Trek TNG: The Magic of Our Past

Tuvok

I walk up find Paris speaking with B'Elanna. "Excuse me here is a list of decks that need to be shut down. The time for there shut down is on there. We going to start sharing rooms. This is to save on power. When you to get done flirting would you take care of this B'Elanna." Tuvok handed her the list and let before eithere of them could respond.

Chakotay
I tap on my communicator "Mr.Paris please see me on the bridge now". I need to talk with about going down on the planet. We might need to go in with a shuttle instead of using the transporters."

B'Elanna

"Damn, just when I thought I had the chance" I thought reaching up to take the list.

Glancing down the list I noted that at least it was just me and Tom in their room.

"Commander, I'll get right on it as soon as I finish helping Tom with the Delta flyer. It is having some engineering problems" glancing over to Tom giving him a quick wink.

At least I had bought myself a bit more time for us to be alone, besides I could work from down here. I have the codes and I can work from the power station down here.

The comander left and I turned back to Tom. Giving him my best "come here and kiss me you fool" look I could.

Tom Paris

"Damn, why now Chakotay?" I think to myself, before answering him. "Be right there, Paris out."

Turning to B'Elanna, I kiss her before turning to leave. "Hey at least we have a real reason to be in the shuttlebay, be there shortly." I say to her with a grin.

I stride into the bridge, and stopped in front of Chakotay. "What is the plan Commander?" I ask.

Chakotay

"Mr.Paris come with me to the Captain’s Ready Room. I think it would be better to take a
shuttle instead of beaming down. By the time we get there we will really be running low
on power. What we don't need is to get down there and run out of power. On a personal
not Paris. When we get there I expect you to be at your best. You know about the room
sharing. Your roommate will be B'Elanna. If this is a problem this can be changed. If I feel
this is interfering with your duties. This will change even quicker. Is that understood
Mr.Paris"

Tom Paris

"Loud and clear." I reply.

"I have no problems with that at all, and when aren't I at my best?" I ask with a smile.

"I do recomend that I give the shuttle a complete looking over, how about we take the Delta Flyer, it is perfect for the mission and it shouldn't take long to get it to peak operating perameters." I state. "I should know, I helped design and build it." I think to myself.

Janeway

I walked into the ready room just in time to overhear the conversation between Chakotay and Paris. "Sounds good,"I said to him with a smile,"You and B'Elanna spend whatever time you have to to make sure that the Delta Flyer is ready for the mission. Just make sure our Chief Engineer doesnt neglect the engines. The Delta Flyer isnt going to do us much good if we cant get to the planet."

With a nod to the door, I said,"You're dismissed. I have some things I have to discuss with Chakotay anyway."

Tom Paris

"Yes captain, The Flyer will be the most energy efficient craft when we get done. The engines will be perfect also." I ramble as I rush out, the doors sliding shut behind me.

Reaching the shuttlebay, I board the Flyer. "B'Elanna are you in here?" I ask.

Sarina

I sighed. I knew it was going to come down to this. Ever since the offworlders had come here the councel had been at each other's throats. We were very much divided on this issue and I had hoped that this meeting would clear things up...not make them worse.

"Both sides of the issue are represented well,"I said to them, my face showing a bit more weariness now than it had,"But the problem has been escalated and each of you know that. When the offworlders first came to our home we recognized the use of technology thanks to the sacrifice of our bretheren...those who made a drastic mistake and paid for it with their lives."

"Weary of this new 'magic' we 'detained' them hoping to find out their intentions and see if we could not do and erase on their minds. We found that they were sent here by a great organization and that we cannot hope to erase the knowledge of this world from every mind in that organization. Also their technology makes it so that records even more permanent than our scrolls would ensure that people knew about us."

I sat down and ran a hand through my dark hair. Turning to Sorkorin, I said,"I have already searched their minds with magic. I found that they are all different. Though the one that leads them seems to be honest and forthright there are others that are of a different mind. Our magic seems to have ignited a lust for power in a few of them."

Turning back to the rest of the council, I said,"Also, I saw their enemies in their minds. It was a frightening vision. Even if we got their full cooperation we could expect their enemies to get ahold of any information that they have and then our way of life would not only be destroyed but we, ourselves, would be enslaved and our magics used to enslave others."

"I am afraid I have to agree with Ransitar in the fact that this problem is not going to just go away. However, I am hesitant to explore this technology further. It was the downfall of our brotheren and I will not see our society destroyed as they were."

Peros

"Fine." I say with a look of contempt towards the rest of the council. What fools some of them were. They were so fearful of repeating the mistakes of the past that they could not even have the bare minimum of open mindedness.

"I am willing to accept some of your concerns about these people and their vessels but I request that you release our guests." he stressed this last word. "to me. I will take them to my estate in the Falken Peaks. It is secluded, so they cannot interact with our people and it will allow the nearby Oracles of the Earth access to them. Perhaps after meeting with our foremost Clairvoyants we will be able to better see the possible negative effects of their motives and the possible disaster they could bring down upon our fair world."

Or at least thats what I would like you all to believe my intentions are. If they are in my care I can assure that they will enjoy their temporary stay so that when they would be released to the comrades who would inevitably come for them, and I will see to it that they are released, our hospitality would only encouraged them to leave us alone. Time up north would also allow me to see my Daughter finally.

I stand up, stretching out to my full height and look with a confrontational eye to the rest of the council, most notably at our Chairwoman and Ransitar.

"Any objections." I ask coldly.

Ransitar

Ransitar rubbed his eyes. "Numerous objections," he sighed. "but none that would satisfy you." He looked up at Peros, then shook his head in resignation. "Very well, I will not stand in the way of releasing them to your care, on the condition that each wears a Brooch of Location at all times. If one of them should wander away, well, the Falken Peaks are surrounded by the wilderness you so love. It wouldn't do for them to stumble upon a merossus lair, would it?"

He ignored Peros' glare and looked again at Sarina. She wasn't handling this added stress well, he thought. The dark circles under her eyes were new, and she seemed pale. On top of everything else she had to handle that fat drunk as if he deserved respect.

"I don't like this Technology," he said in a quiet voice that barely reached the other's ears. "I've made no secret about that. I don't like it, and I don't trust it. Nothing in our world's experience demonstrates that it is anything but dangerous." His voice rose slightly. "But a standard rule of any encounter is 'know your opponent'. We need to learn what we can of this power, if we are to defend ourselves against it or," he said with a glance at the rest of the table. "to negotiate intelligently." He leaned back and folded his hands in his lap. "Keep your hopes alive, if it comforts you. But do not play blind dice games with the lives of the people we protect."

B'Elanna

I heard him call for me as I peaked in from around the corner. The main powersource for the room bhad been acting up so I used the backup to start my task.

"Over here" surprising him once more from behind. He steped out of the Flyer and wandered over. " was just working on shutting down the power on the assigned decks. So how did your meeting with the commander go.?"

Before he could answer I pulled him around the corner where we wouldn't be seen and passionately kissed him. The feel of his arms around me made me forget all the stress of earlier on.

"I'm finished here, lets go back to our room. It' been a while."

Sorkorin

'Blind dice games? BLIND DICE GAMES??', I shout at Ransitar, "You are the fool who thinks we should just destroy them all because they are different. And you know nothing of the games you are playing with the lives of this planet.'

'Sarina', I ask reasonably, ' I understand your concern over finding some members of the crew that want to find out more about us and our power. But do we not have the same problem with people on this council?' I wait for a moment to gaze deep into his eyes, waiting for him to defy my argument. 'I agree that Peros's suggestion at a minimum is the best solution we have. And other intelligent dissentions?'

What game is Peros playing? Why does he want them at his locale?

Sarina

I shook my head. This meeting was leading nowhere fast and the fact that most of the council members were at each other's throat was not helping my fatigue. I desperately needed to meditate, rest and recover my strength or my magic would be no good at all.

Holding up my hands, I signaled for silence and got it. A begrudging silence to be sure but it was there. "This is not netting us any solutions," I said to them all,"And I grow weary of the arguments. I will put on the table a compromise. We will move the prisoners to the Siren's Tower located just outside the city. It has been vacated for quite a few rotations and has luxuries that our dungeons do not."

Looking over at Ransitar I added,"This will be done provided they agree to wear the Brooch of Location. Those that refuse will be kept in the dungeons. It is the best compromise that I can offer."

My gaze swept to Peros. "You and your daughter will be the only contact from our people to theirs. I trust I must not remind you that they are to know nothing more of our peoples and cultures than they already do. You are to take care of their needs such as food and concerns....and an offering of a friendly face. Something most of us are not prepared to give at this moment."

My next comment was back to Ransitar. "You will be in charge of the security of the tower. Use whatever means you feel necessary...up to anything that would do unessasary harm to any of them. All of our resources are at your diposal. I do not want to let them have contact with any of our people except for those whom we appoint. I will expect full details before this council within the next two cycles."

Then to Sorkorin,"We will use a transportation spell to go into their sky ship and examine it. No one else but ourselves will be privy to the information. However I will make my own report to the council when we are done and any of you can place a truth spell or mind read spell upon me to ensure that my report is complete. I still do not think exposure to this technology is beneficial."

Letting my gaze sweep over each and every one around the table, I said,"Shall we vote?"

Ransitar

Ransitar could only stare incredulously at Sorkorin. How could such people exist, he thought, that simply could not listen? When had he ever said he wanted to harm the prisoners? He shook his head in speechless bewilderment. Could someone have snuck in a Confusion spell? No, it was just Sorkorin's usual twisting of words. Ransitar decided not to be baited.

He focused on Sarina's words, and as he listened it dawned on him again (why did it always surprise him?) how well-suited she was to chair this group. Her voice was calm, tired even, but it carried a power that forced the rest to listen if not to heed. He wasn't satisfied with the compromises, but had known that he wouldn't get his way completely. Around this table they all played the game, but the consequences were not often so world-wide in scope.

"Shall we vote?" asked Sarina.

Yes, he thought, time to move on. "Agreed," he nodded.

Peros

"Very well." I nod. There are other things that need to be looked at and the compromise was acceptable, I can still tend well to the outworlders while the more suspicious among us investigate further.

Sorkorin

Sarina and I shall investigate this ship? I smiled as she said that. She knows me well. What better way to get my agreement than to give me what I want.

'I am in favor of this agreement.', I say to the council.

I turn to Peros. 'I shall hold you responible for keeping out guests safe.'

'Sarina, you and I should stay here and come up with our plan for investigating their ship after the council leaves.'

Capt. Picard

"Excellent, Data. If no one else has anything to add, dismissed"

Jean-Luc stands, making eye-contact with each of his senior officers. He knew he could count on them to make this latest mission as successful as so many others had been.

"Oh, and Mr. Data, please plot in a course that takes us by DS11, so we may pick up the good Colonel."

Ransitar

The meeting concluded, and chairs scraped on marble as the members started to rise. Ransitar pocketed the blue cube and stood. He glanced at Sarina as she assembled her papers, and then looked sideways at Sorkorin. He was looking directly back with a small smile of triumph.

Ransitar ignored him but felt his blood pressure rise again. He whipped the cape around his shoulders and swept out of the room, striding angrily down the center of the hall.

Sarina

As the last of the council members filed out of the chamber, Sarina sighed and sank back into her chair, a total weariness coming over her. These were dire times indeed and she was trying her best to come up with solutions that addressed both sides of the issue but this walking the fence was straining her nerves to no end. Eventually they would have to make a hard and fast decision one way or the other and she was not looking forward to what she was sure it must be.

Opening her eyes, she rolled her head to the side to look at Sorkorin. She had known Sorkorin since they were children. Their parents had been very close and there was even a time when it looked as if.... Sarina shook her head. Best to leave the past in the past. Their world and whole way of life hinged on what was happening now.

With a weary smile, she said,"I must rest and meditate before we attempt a transportation spell or there is no telling where I will end up. But I am very frightened of what we shall find once we are there. I am afraid we find ourselves sitting on the opposite sides of the fence yet again." Issues of the council had often divided them but none had been so important as this one. Laying her head back against the chairman's seat, she closed her eyes once again as she waited for him to speak.

Janeway

I looked over to Chakotay and let the doors close behind Paris before I started talking. "I am worried about the moral of the crew," I said as I walked over and sat down waiving toward a chair beside me to indicate that he should sit also. "I would be interested in hearing any thoughts on how to keep the moral up while still sticking to our rationing."

Deanna

I left the ready room and headed back to the turbo lift. I did not have any appointments planned for the rest of the afternoon so I was planning on looking up the crew of the Tusla and getting to know their personal profiles. If they found the crew and ship intact, the knowledge would help me to deal with any repercussions that might surface due to their ordeal....whatever that might be.

LaForge

Geordi entered the turbolift with Deanna and they began the smooth journey through the ship. He watched the deck lights flit past and mused, "Eighteen days. Should be plenty of time to get the ship rearranged, just in case we need to take on the Tesla's crew."

She looked at him carefully. "You seem bothered by something."

He looked abashed and grinned in embarrassment. "No sense trying to hide from you, counselor. I was just thinking that I need to bone up on my stellar cartography. I miscalculated that nebula's distance by four parsecs." The door swished open. "Thanks for asking though."

Deanna smiled and walked into the corridor. He couldn't help noticing how well her hips moved in the uniform. Geordi sighed and then shook it off as the lift continued to engineering. She must sense those kind of feelings a lot wherever she goes, he thought. Hopefully she just tunes them out. He started thinking about probe modifications and by the time the doors opened again he was deep into planning.

Kyla

Kyla sat on her porch, rocking in the chair her father had made before leaving for the city. It had been some time since they last spoke with each other. He had wanted her to go with him, but she refused. They had quarreled a bit, but in the end she won out. She loved the city, it was a wonderful place to meet people and accuire items she couldn't get anywhere else. But she loved her home and the Peaks more. There was something soothing, and peaceful about the Falkens. She wasn't sure why, but it was as though it talked to her.

There was also the fact that even though both her parents were born with the gifts of magic, Kyla had inherited none of it. She had been an outcast as a child, and failed miserably in all the games and activities the children partook in. Her parents thought it was a phase, that eventually she would grow out of it. Even her mothers untimely death left Kyla useless in the mysteries of wizardry. That was another reason why Kyla lived alone. No one could bother her about it.

Kyla smiled as the setting sun cast a glowing red over the mountain range. This was her favorite time of the cycle, when the sun met the fall and the moons became brighter in the sky. Kyla closed her eyes for a moment, and a picture of her father appeared to her. He was smiling, and holding out his hand, seeming to be calling to her.

Tom Paris

"Man this feels wonderful." I think as I return her kiss.

"Hon, there is a slight delay I need to be sure the Flyer is above peak operating perameters for the mission." I tell her, tracing my fingers over the ridges of her forehead.

"After that, we can go to our room and make up for lost time." I say before kissing her again.

"Oh yes, the Commander wants me to be on my best behavior also, or I am off of the mission."

I quickly board the shuttle and start running diagnostics. "B'Elanna, this might take awhile, come on in and we can pass the time more effeciently." I call out to her.
