Hello! Don't mean to hijack your thread Vella but it seems their are more then few intelligent people here so I pose this question since I was looking for something to read this summer.

I already passed my quota for short dirty stories this year so I need to give my mind a short break to cool off :D

What are your tastes? Which genre(s) do you like the most (besides erotica)?

I've read many good anthologies, but most of them have been horror and sci-fi. If those are your bag, as it were, I could give you many recommendations.

Lou

I think that this thread must be this month's winner of the "Make-The-Most-People- Feel-Bad Thread" award.

Hmmmpf!

Ten minutes ago I finally finished Alice Sebold's "the Lovely Bones".
It's about a 14 yr old girl who was raped and murdered by serial killer. It gives her perspective of what she experiences in "Her" heaven and what her family and friends endure on earth. It's not about God and angels, it's about living and dying. Very well written, not too long either. A chance to see through the eyes of the dead so to speak and not depressing at all.

I'm soooo glad someone has read the same thing I have. :rose:

That was fast!

Thank you Perdita and Lauren for the sugestions, I will see if I can track those books down.

Tatelou please give me your recommendations I'm open minded I can read almost anything. Though I think I would prefer to read horror during the colder months.

If you like Westerns, Louis Lamour's the Warriors path has some great short stories as does Duchman's Flats.

Okie dokie, here goes...

Clive Barker's Books of Blood (volumes 1 - 3). Classic horror shorts.

Dreadful Tales, by Richard Laymon. Some real gems in here.

The Bachman Books, by Stephen King (Richard Bachman). More novellas than short stories, but The Long Walk and Rage are excellent.

One More For The Road, by Ray Bradbury. Some good ones in here - original and gripping. He is a sci-fi author, but these stories aren't really sci-fi based.

The Best of H. P. Lovecraft: Bloodcurdling Tales of Horror and the Macabre, by H.P. Lovecraft, Robert Bloch. Pure class.

Complete Stories and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe, by Edgar Allan Poe. A must.

I could go on and on, but I think that's enough to be going along with. :D

The Collected Work of H. P. Lovecraft

Narrator: I will tell you about something horrific I witnessed.

(Narrator discusses MUNDANE experiences which supposedly lead up to something HORRIFIC.)

Narrator: We're almost at the horrific bit.

(Narrator talks about more stuff that might be SPOOKY if he'd only GET ON WITH IT.)

Narrator: We're very close now.

(Narrator draws it out MORE.)

Narrator: This time I swear we're just about at the horrific thing almost.

(Narrator FINALLY gets to the HORRIFIC thing which is HUGE and POWERFUL and EVIL and LAME.)

THE END

Sorry, couldn't resist. :D :cathappy:

Oh, if you're into fantasy there's The Mammoth Book of Comic Fantasy. Loads of really fun short stories. :)

taking a deep breath

for some mindless and smirk invoking reading.. the following list of chick lit, i recommend:

  • Jemima J Jane Green
  • Asking for Trouble Elizabeth Young
  • Game Over Adele Parks
  • Good in Bed Jennifer Weiner
  • My Fake Wedding Mina Ford
  • Easy Emma Gold
  • Can You Keep a Secret Sophie Kinsella
  • The entire Confessions of a Shopaholic series Sophie Kinsella

the above list is all chick lit. i read them like they are going out of style; one book a day. 'spensive habit, but they all make me laugh so its worth it.
All of them have the same general theme. young woman in 30's has what she considers a bad life.. shes clutzy and far from ideal.. she makes her way and things are happily ever after. perfect, cuz its all about ME.. *grin*
