Syria Is Falling, Assad May Be Finished

The US has no right to lecture anyone on democracy. None at all. The US authorities protested recently against Nicolas Maduro winning again in Venezuela, despite Jimmy Carter saying about 15 years ago that Venezuela has the most democratic electoral system in the world.

Also, no country has broken more UN resolutions than Israel.

That was 15 years ago. The 2018 election was not free or fair.

It's the same electoral system as 15 years ago. A US coup was also launched in Venezuela in 2002 against Hugo Chavez.

Just because the opposition is divided between those who want to do the electoral path and those that want to do violence in the streets, and also between those who want the US to invade/intervene and those who don't, it doesn't change the fact that the electoral system is very democratic.

You may be sure the U.S. is going to invade Venezuela, if Marco Rubio is Secretary of State.

There would likely be massive resistance from the Venezuelan people, including from some opposition supporters.

And as John F. Kennedy found out after the Bay of Pigs, if you fail, you ruin things for the foreseeable future. It's comical now to think that JFK was allegedly plotting to assassinate Fidel Castro.

There does not seem to be any way this can end well, no matter who wins -- Assad the dictator, or the Islamist insurgents.

Like Ghaddafi, I would have said Assad was the lesser of the evils myself. He kept a lid on the Islamofascists. I notice Israel has stayed out of this apart from the odd hit on Hezbollah and the Iranians. We all know why Obama destabilized these countries - Libya and Syria - backing radical Islamic insurgents against established dictators that kept things controlled and were willing to deal. Obama, Hilary Clinton screwed that one up between them, just like Obama and Biden sold out Ukraine. What we're seeing now is the end run of all the malicious Obama interventions.

Syria is going to fragment, the Turks are going to have a go at the Kurds, the Druze in the south are likely to turn to Israel the way the Falange in Lebanon did, the end result will be a rump Islamofacsist state worse by far than Assad's rule, and who knows where that will go. The Turks will replace the Iranians as defacto powerbrokers in Syria and Erdogan has no love for Israel. End result will be Middle East Mess Round 2, unless Trump can kick ass and stablize things.

The one good thing out of this is Iran is gone from Syria, and Russia's Mediterranean naval base is likely to be history, meaning that while the Ukraine war is going on and the straits are closed, they have no ability to project any naval force into the Med.

“According to the Wall Street Journal, Bashar al-Assad’s wife and children traveled to Russia last week, while his sons-in-law went to the United Arab Emirates.”

Russia? I thought he’d go somewhere warmer.

LOL. They need somewhere that's not going to hand them over to The Hague. Not too many places for that for the Assad's.

UN resolutions are worth less than seagull shit. We shouldn't even be in the UN. And the UN shouldn't be in the US. Evict them and let them pay for themselves. The UN has long outlived its purpose and usefulness.
No, no, no!!!!! Build a new headquarters for them in the US Virgin Islands. That should be far enough offshore and the diplomats should piss away enough money there that we won't have to subsidize the islands anymore. Further, because it's US territory we'll be able to continue spying on their ass unfettered. :D

Forget what I said about Israel above. I guess enlightenment has dawned, Israel realizes the fall of Assad is going to create trouble for them, and they're now in the process of ‘expanding their buffer zone’ around the Golan Heights.

Israeli ground troops, supported by air strikes, are in the process of conquering even more of Syria (in addition to the Golan Heights, long ago absorbed into Israel), in the northern Qunaitra. All of the Qunaitra, Dera’a and Suwayda provinces are under insurgent control since yesterday. The remaining Assadists formations all disarmed.

Additionally, the Israeli Air-Space Force (IASF) is flying air strikes in the Dera’a Province (apparently: the Inkhil area and the Sheikh Miskin area), and the Khelkhleh AB, in north-western Suwayda Province. The Ahrar Horan OR reports that the air strikes have destroyed military depots in Tel Hamad and Tel al-Thilab.

Just read that Assad's plane was shot down as he bailed out of Damascus
One the one hand "Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad's flight-to-exile airplane disappeared from radar shortly after it departed Damascus International Airport. A Russian-built Il-76 with Assad and his entourage on board took off as opposition forces were entering Damascus, and his high command was negotiating the surrender of the city." The flight was headed toward the UAE, but it suddenly disappeared from radar as it approached Homs, some 100 miles from Damascus. Opposition forces are claiming credit for shooting the plane down, but there is no evidence to support this.

And on the other hand.....Russian Media Claims Syria's Fugitive Dictator Was Granted Political Asylum and Is in Moscow. According to the source in the Kremlin, Assad and his family have arrived in Moscow. Being guided by humanitarian considerations, Russia has granted asylum for them.

Last night, there were a fluffy of reports indicating that the Russian-built Il-76 carrying Assad and his entourage had been forced down or shot down shortly after takeoff from Damascus International Airport. That flight was anticipated to carry him into exile in the UAE; see BREAKING: Assad Missing As His Airplane Disappears From Radar While Fleeing Damascus. The only source for this report is TASS. There has been no official Russian comment on Assad's situation or location. There have been no images or video released of Assad's arrival in Moscow, though a lot of file imagery is kicking around.

On the other hand, I can fully believe that the CIA engineered this to get rid of Assad and make Trump's job even more difficult. Regardless, the CIA and the Intelligence Agencies need to be purged as well. The plus side is, there are millions of Syrian refugees who can now be shipped back to Syria immediately to help with reconstruction of their country. Their valuable skills are needed far more in their own country than in Europe, the USA and Canada. We cannot in good conscience, suck away these educated and talented resources from their country when it needs them.

Besides, we're going to need all that welfare housing for the Syrian Christians.

The vacuum of Hezbollah, Iran, Russia was one of multiple conflicts. The number of countries with their fingers in the pot here is not limited to the US nor is it entirely evident that the US was in the driver's seat.

I admittedly haven't been dialing in on this but just in a day's worth of hearing analysis from multiple outlets, corroborative perspective seems clear.

LOL. Apparently Israel is currently bombing an entire CONVOY of Hezbollah terrorists trying to escape Syria towards Lebanon.

It's a highway of death, and Israel isn't allowing any terrorist to get away.

Good one.

I know. It's confusing as all heck and I haven't been following it at all. This just came out of nowhere and it's going to be a mess. Say what you like about Assad, he kept a lid on things.

I don't think it came out of nowhere nor do I think Assad kept things under wraps. Attention was elsewhere, which might be how his opposition made their move.

Both Trump and Biden have a decision to make and quickly. We have a contingent of military defending Conoco oil fields. A decision needs to be made, either we bolster those troops or pull out. Don't think the Kurds will come to our aid.

Israel has declared the 1974 separation of forces agreement between Israel and Syria effectively terminated. Netanyahu said: "Last night it collapsed. The Syrian army abandoned its positions. We gave the Israeli army the order to take over these positions to ensure that no hostile force embeds itself right next to the border of Israel."

He added that the situation was temporary "until a suitable arrangement is found," but added that Israel would do whatever it takes to defend its borders. The agreement following the 1973 Yom Kippur War created a buffer zone along the border monitored by a UN peacekeeping mission. Israeli Army units have crossed the border to establish a secure buffer zone.

I would guess the power vacuum showed the opportunity for strategic gains.

I think there's a lot of Druze down there too, and the Druze in Israel have been pretty solid Israeli citizens. There may be something going on there, too. Who knows. I'm just speculating here.
