Israel isn't going to do anything beyond securing the border. They'll be concentrating on finishing off Hezbollah with the help of the Lebanese Army being encouraged by our incoming president.

Russia and Iran are the big losers here.

I fully expect Russia to sign on to a cease fire agreement with Ukraine VERY soon loosely based on the framework Gen. Kellogg published a little over a year ago.

Iran is withdrawing its forces. I think Turkey is about to become a much bigger player in the unfolding drama. Israel just took some elevated Syrian territory for its own strategic use.

The borders established after WWI were ridiculous. There were so many competing tribal populations, some allied, some hostile, all confined within the same borders.

When Syrians were testifying before US Congress behind closed doors in 2019 about the atrocities that Assad was supposedly responsible for, Democratic AND REPUBLICAN staffers agreed to hide certain witnesses faces and identities because they believed Representative Tulsi Gabbard could not be trusted to keep this information from Assad.

Russia had a deal with Assad and built two naval bases on the northeastern shores of Syria for a considerable amount of gold bars shipped directly to Assad. These "bases" were little more than trans-shipment ports where Russia had cargo ships routinely transporting large quantities of rare minerals mined in Africa to Russian ports.

While Trump was bloviating about petrochemicals from 2016 to 2020, Russia and China were snapping up leasehold for mines of exotic minerals like cobalt and gallium.

Rare minerals are essential to manufacturing things like advanced computer chips and sophisticated laser targeting systems. Aircraft can fly higher, farther and faster with parts made of lighter composites.

Trump didn't care, he campaigned on "drill baby drill" and he was giving the unwashed masses exactly what they wanted....Putin eagerly swooped in as more and more minerals got on the world's "must have" list as weaponry like hypersonic missiles got more exotic.

If the "rebels" take over the Russian military ports, the military supply chain is severely fucked for Russia. It will be interestin to see what the incoming dictator will do to assist his Russian patron.

The Russian position now that Assad has been reported in Russia may change and the security of those bases may be untenable. So Russia may in fact pull out or fortify those bases and take action of their own. We should know very soon as it is better understood who these victorious forces really are and their intent going forward. I just saw a report showing the commander of that terrorist group saying his forces will be standing on the Temple Mount before too long. That implies an even bigger problem for the region.
