Texas law won't allow pregnant woman to be taken off life support

but the rights of another piece of meat are stronger then the rights of another piece of meat

The above poster is not a nice person. He/she seems to feel that his/her hysterical paranoia about confronting what he/she defines as "racism" makes him/her a nice person but clearly it doesn't.

please point out where race was brought into this

there is no scientific or medical reason to keep either piece of meat alive

If we're going to make it compulsory I see no reason to allow people to opt out.

because those with religious reasons, or other issues, would live their lives freaking out that they wouldn't be risen or get to heaven or some shit. I may think it's bullshit but they could be severely distressed for decades, mentally tortured, and that's kinda sucky. if they care that much they'll opt out, sign the papers, make it official.

for everybody else who is just a bit squeamish or doesn't like to think about it or whose families would baulk in the moment, make it the default setting. you're meat and others could be saved.

Fair enough. Though under those circumstances I would think a religious exemption would be needed. I assume you'd keep the standard driver's license is where you give permission rule and I'd hate to think that I converted to a religion and for whatever reason died before changing the paperwork which I wouldn't do until I was required to re-test anyway so my family should be able to update it.

you can't discriminate against atheists who have issues.

it's not that hard, notifying some government body that you want your name added to a list. especially these days, when the list spreads nationwide in a fraction of a second. I don't think people should need to prove a case or jump through hoops, I just think that if they care they'll bother and the 90% that won't bother will save a great many lives.

that's the big if. how can you prove it when the baby is in the womb?

I don't know the facts of this case but someone mentioned oxygen deprivation for an hour. There is no way that baby is not going to be equally affected. It needs the very same things its mother needed to sustain life.

I wonder if the can do an EEG transvaginally?

doubtful.

I don't know how much is known about oxygen deprivation at such an early stage. probably very little. more brain matter will have grown since that happened. much more. so there's a possibility that the baby would be nowhere near as damaged as the mother, whose entire brain suffered oxygen deprivation.

My assumption is that there is no way to know until the child is born/Cut out.

We discriminate against atheists all the time. We shouldn't but we can. My point that I meant to make however though is I don't think I would remember to change that if I happened to change my beliefs and while I guess your right people has issues I assume that most of these reasons deal with folks changing religion.

I would personally think my family should have the final say. I don't think many families would go against the expressed wishes of the the individual but once I die and I become a sack of meat they are the ones who are going to be dealing with the stress of having not put in me in the ground, headed towards Skywalker Ranch, with my internal organs in separate jars within thirteen hours. Not me and if I marry a hot Muslim Chick. . .I guess I'll be dead but I don't want her freaking out because I forgot to fill out the paperwork between banging her so fucking hard she looks like an alien.

families are frequently squeamish in the moment. but, if the choice were taken, I doubt they'd be losing sleep over it for years to come.

That's a very good point. I didn't realize she was so early in her pregnancy.

considering that, and as any intrusive testing carries a risk of infection and/or miscarriage, wait and see seems like a reasonable tactic to me.

The part that bothers me most is her family wanting to let them go but the state is intervening. I am part of a movement here in Massachusetts that is trying to get a right to die bill into the state legislature. I just think if her family is ok with letting them go, why is the state allowed to intervene?

Other than that, I think it is a reasonable thought process to wait and see.

I suspect that the family objects to bearing the cost of life support as much as they do to the principle of protecting the fetus. Being required to go bankrupt because the State requires an additional 8-9 months of life support is not an appealing prospect.

I hope that the State of Texas is paying for ALL, every fucking one, of the medical bills the husband and parents of this brain-dead shell that was once a woman will be given once the baby is born!

And if the baby does have physical and/or mental problems, the State of Texas pays for the care, in perpetuity!

And if the baby grows up to become the doctor who cures stupidity once and for all...

...does the State of Texas get to bill you for the rest of your saved life?

The State of Texas are keeping the woman on life support, therefore, they should be responsible for ALL bills incurred!

It's "The State of Texas is...", not "are", doofus...

...and, akin to Dorothy clicking her heels, why don't you type another exclamation point and see if that makes your fantasy come true.

Nice debate tactic: Lose so attack the opponent. Nice, shows that I am correct.

Thanks for playing, eyer. Go to the next GB thread and play along there.
