They're also running them waaaaay hotter than they used to for "emission standards."

That doesn't sound good. You want a warm engine but there's a temp gauge on the dash for a reason, no?

They're hotter because they're trying to get the power density up. More HP/cu in means a smaller engine can do the job of a larger one. But we both know what happens when you push an engine hard for a long time.

One winter, I was making tea. Boiling water on the stove in my lovely red kettle - no picture. I had on heavy wool socks, and I managed to spill some water on the top of my right foot. It didn't hurt all that much and then I remembered that the sock was wet with 200* water and that my skin was in contact with it. We loathe burns as a kind/type of wound, and that one was quite exquisite.

The problem with these new engines (IMO), is the engine oil is also used as hydraulic oil in the variable valve timing actuators. Hydraulic oil and engine oil are different, and cleanliness matters more in hydraulic applications. Bottom line, Clean oil = Longer life. But manufacturers are recommending longer and longer oil service intervals.
