Two things can be true at the same time.

1. Many people don’t want data centers near their homes or in their communities due to various concerns, including excessive power consumption they fear will drive their bills up, noise, and water resource consumption.

2. Many people fear AI will take their jobs away and/or AI will cause serious havoc and potentially even destroy humanity.

There’s overlap between these two things, for sure. There’s also a lot of confusion and out there.

For example, many people think all data centers are the same and see no differences between scale, power sources, cooling technology. To these folks, all data centers are the same and they’re all bad.

Regarding AI, many people think it’s inherently evil and offers no potential to improve lives.

I see concerns valid about electricity prices and water and climate change, all of which are overblown. I also see concerns about job loss, which is valid, but likely overblown. I see the "it makes too much noise" concern, which I think is a non issue that can be overcome easily with sound barriers

Overall having the US in charge of this technology is vital over someone like China....for both security and economics....and humanity. We need a place to build data centers and if we don't, the race for the tech will be lost......China won't be pumping the brakes.

Yep - Vivek, a candidate for Ohio governor has suggested legislation where data centers pay for electricity of everyone near them. I think we should have legislation that makes them pay for electricity and water to displace their impact.

Unfortunately,as in Ohio , legislators were more focused on beinging their economies to the area and so started out by giving the. All tax breaks and free rides without much thought. So you're having to reverse already enacted legislation. Not sure how easy that is. Putting the cart before the horse....I guess

If operators are running generators without a permit they are already breaking the law. Adding more laws won't stop them.

Politicians are lying to the people by telling them about all of the jobs it will create.

The construction is crappy tilt up buildings that take weeks, not months to build, and the centers themselves will put people out of jobs.

Any politician that touts them is suspect.

Have you ever been on the site of a “mega project”? Do you know how many companies are able to employ people during construction? Not only is there the construction of the buildings, there are power contractors, HVAC, concrete, companies providing water for the employees, port in potties, food, safety, restaurants in the area...i could go on and on. There are lots of people that will make money during construction that could only dream of making that kind of money previously. And these data centers don’t run themselves. They need to be managed and maintained. Things will need to be repaired. The DC’s will provide thousands a good paying jobs to areas that had no industry at all prior to this.
