The AI & Data Center Thread

Have you ever been on the site of a “mega project”? Do you know how many companies are able to employ people during construction? Not only is there the construction of the buildings, there are power contractors, HVAC, concrete, companies providing water for the employees, port in potties, food, safety, restaurants in the area...i could go on and on. There are lots of people that will make money during construction that could only dream of making that kind of money previously. And these data centers don’t run themselves. They need to be managed and maintained. Things will need to be repaired. The DC’s will provide thousands a good paying jobs to areas that had no industry at all prior to this.
There are a ton of temporary jobs or transient jobs. Overall, the final product is not very impressive for employment ....very similar to the keystone pipeline setup. You do need technical experts to keep things running and certainly electricians on call, but sustainable economic growth is non existent .

Two of my most profitable clients are Turner and McCarthy.

Data centers are not "mega projects." They're bullshit tilt up buildings that are basically a shell of cheap materials.

This should be the disclaimer that comes with every politician trying to sell them as employment depots.

Yep - Vivek, a candidate for Ohio governor has suggested legislation where data centers pay for electricity of everyone near them. I think we should have legislation that makes them pay for electricity and water to displace their impact.

Unfortunately,as in Ohio , legislators were more focused on beinging their economies to the area and so started out by giving the. All tax breaks and free rides without much thought. So you're having to reverse already enacted legislation. Not sure how easy that is. Putting the cart before the horse....I guess

I say we should have AI figure this shit out for us.....irony!

The state of Virginia is the data center capital of the USA. Their electricity rates are between 6% and 15% below the national average. I don’t know how they manage that but it’s worth other states taking a close look.

Decent, intelligent individuals warned of the harms of the Dot.Com bubble, exacerbated climate change related to increased energy consumption from the internet, etc, and an unregulated internet back in the day as well…

Meanwhile:

1) An unregulated internet has brought us instantaneous global misinformation / disinformation and alternate facts / truth which has facilitated Putin, Xi, Iran, Hamas, etc, in their propaganda efforts to undermine established and nascent democracies (most notably, in America). Unregulated AI & data centers look to be a FAR greater threat.

2 The AI & data center bubble poses a FAR greater risk / threat to the global economy WHEN it bursts than the Dot.Com bubble did.

3) Climate change appears to have reached a tipping point, so treating / viewing any further insults to the environment from Ai & data center related energy production & consumption as identical to problems in the past (which were largely treated cosmetically) is foolhardy - at best.

4) The noise AND pollution from data centers running unauthorized generators to meet their energy demands IS a MAJOR problem. And I would submit that firing up the old Three Mile Island reactors, etc to meet AI energy demands is… suboptimal…

Hope that ^ helps.

And what would those people otherwise be doing if not the transient jobs? And these projects last several years. These are opportunities that ordinarily would not exist.

What feelings. I’ve been on these projects and seen for myself. I’ve worked in these communities where the people are thrilled to be able to have opportunities they wouldn’t ordinarily have. Look at places like Jackson and Shreveport. Look at the billions of dollars that are being poured into those areas. Did you know that teachers in those communities receive bonuses so the school districts there can attract and retain good teachers? Do you know that the power grids in these areas are being rebuilt for at the expense of the data centers? Potholes are being repaired. Crumbling infrastructure is being repaired all because of these data centers.

In a political sense, the data center issue is simple.
  1. Data centers are unpopular.
  2. Candidates in the midterms who ignore #1 are jeopardizing their chances.
Arguing that the majority of voters are ignorant or confused is pointless.
The midterm elections are considered a temporary bump in the road by investors in the data center bubble. These investors know that they'll have permit process favor from the Trump administration for at least two more years.

So, both right-wing Republican and Democratic candidates who promote this bubble will simply keep their heads low until after the midterms.

"Profitable" means that we take in more money than we put out for those clients.

Hope that helps 👍🏼

Show me "the billions of dollars being poured into those communities" or shut the fuck up.

So you say I don’t know what I’m taking about but expect me to do your homework. Either come with some real facts or you shut the fuck up. All of this information is just a quick AI google search away.

Ohio set up huge tax breaks that still exist so electricity and water prices are getting jacked up by the these things because our legislation is behind.

Do your own homework. It’s a quick AI search on your browser. Stop the talking points from CNN and the DNC. It’s really easy.

Not for the left. For some reason they like AI but can't figure out how to use it.

Potholes are repaired? You mean the potholes created by the construction trucks?
