The Confessional

Huh.
So it turns out what I thought was a runny nose for the last ten minutes was a developing bloody one.
Getting stronger.
Going to bed.

Or pass out.
Whichever happens first.

It's a fluke. A bunch of nutcases just happened to be outspoken enough to turn a terrible movie into some sort of fad because it wasn't just 'bad', it transcended the plane of terrible. The fact that people worship it is not evidence of positive influence on society, but rather proof that people are idiots.

It has no connection to "nerd" culture whatsoever. If you were to go to comic-con in a Rocky Horror outfit unironically, there would be something wrong with you.

Disagree. But the nerd culture is vast in it's appreciative and fan glory giving status. While you call horrid, others call classic awesomeness.

BTW... hating on everything doesn't make you cool or hip or intelligentsia in any way.. just makes you grumpy. But it must be asked.. is there anything you DO like?

I have to agree with Ahren there. I have had many nerdy gay friends, but I don't see the connection between Rocky Horror and nerd culture. I certainly see how it liberated gay culture, but not nerd culture.

Being a fanatic about something could be considered being a nerd in the sense that someone who really likes cake is a "cake nerd" but that does not mean cake is part of "nerd culture" as you're using a different definition of the term. To be honest, I wouldn't even consider that proper usage either. Typically nerds refer to the fantasy/comic/sci-fi and computers culture. Rocky Horror has nothing to do with this, regardless of how much you appreciate it.

Sorry if you didn't want to get into an argument over the semantics of the definition of nerd, but you sort of were making a false implication.

And there are plenty of things I like. I'm not sure why you'd even ask that other than to point out my negativity which is already well established. I mean, do you want a list...?

Again. Disagree. While it's well established what exactly the "nerd culture" garners and laudes, to co-opt it in such a way... you risk then losing the culture. Merely because culture in and of itself is a constantly changing ideal and concept.

To be clear. Rocky Horror was an example, I never actually said that I liked it or not. I do not. Nevertheless I think you pinned me as a person who does like it mostly to make sure to differentiate yourself from me, and claim superior status as a "true" nerd. Congratulations.

No list is needed. I merely wished to know if there was, indeed, something you enjoyed and you did not sit and judge everything that is before you, in the "holier than thou" position that you so often take.

I'm really sorry, I didn't mean to start an argument. I was just confessing to falling asleep during some movies. I'm really sorry guys.

*runs back to the darkened, quiet corners of lit.*

Knock it off, you scared her! Shakes hands and agree you'll never agree.

Then we'll merely have to agree to disagree. (I typed this before I saw you say that, Minx. Don't try and take credit!)

Do you know what a strawman argument is?

I genuinely dislike the movie and the culture associated with it. Your opinions of it had no effect on my position.

I know. I wasn't trying to change your position. I was just stating mine. Everyone has those things that bother them to the point where they just have to rant regardless of who cares to listen.

I just happen to have more of those than most.

Actually I'm not even sure that's true. I just happen to speak my mind often. Some people are more vocal about what makes them happy, unfortunately I tend to keep those things more to myself. I don't know why. Just do.

Seeing that this is the confessional thread, I may as well add one to get back on topic. Believe it or not every time I say something I'm sure will irritate someone, I actually get a bit of a knot in my stomach. I don't act argumentative for fun. Then why do I do it? I don't know. Maybe because I'm otherwise immensely quiet. Without things like this, I think it would be hard to prove I even exist.

I guess you can't doubt its effectiveness. People do seem to know who I am. I'd would prefer it to be in a more positive light, but it's not easy to change who you are.

Excuse me. I am trying to grasp the feeling that you're human.... okay we're good.

Tell you what.. we can trade... I'll complain and rant about something and you be positive and bubbly.

Ready? K.. go!

I'm not sure I can be bubbly, but if we want to talk about something I'm really into, it would probably be music. Metal, to be a bit more precise. Anything melodic or cinematic sounding to get very specific.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZFRvNwfBYoM for example.

Heavier, progressive stuff as well.

Or more traditional sounding heavy metal:

I could go on for a while, really. Probably best to stop myself now.

Wow. I'm intrigued Ahren. I really am.

I for one.. hate metal. I don't understand it. I don't like it. The hair, the noise, the absolute lack of respect towards women (to be fair, Rap does this also)... it's misogynistic.

So in true Ahren fashion. Metal is stupid.
(I so bet I didn't even get that right.. but at least I tried)

Well I can't say I listen to anything that "disrespects women" so we're definitely thinking of different things here. I mean, you're clearly thinking of something specific and applying it to a whole genre, the same with rap. I hate rap but even I know it's not all gangstas and hos. Noise is another thing though. It's hard to imagine anyone listening to that first song and simply hearing "noise" though (other than the fact that the youtube quality is pretty crappy). I mean, there's complexity there you won't find in something like Lady Gaga, but I guess that's more a matter of opinion.

I dunno what to say about hair. That has nothing to do with music.

Or are you just bashing what I like to sort of give me a taste of my own medicine, so to speak?

It's possible.

But mostly I hate metal. I tried for like a minute.. but that's not music to me.

I would say it's more than probable.

I'll confess that I have been pleasantly surprised by you tonight Ahren. Well done. Doesn't change the fact I find your grumpiness wholly ridiculous sometimes.. thank you for the vote in the whorehouse.. but nevertheless.. I like you.

And yeah, you'll prolly say I'm an idiot or some such.. whatever..

Actually the whole point of the vote was to see how long it would take people to guess who did it, not really because it reflected my actual opinion. The poll was kinda pointless anyway, I mean anyone going in there was gonna vote yes.

Regardless my plan was rendered moot immediately after when I realized you could see who voted for what. Whoops. Had I known that I wouldn't have bothered.

I don't think you're an idiot, though I wasn't too impressed by your utilization of logical fallacies, such as the sweeping generalizations about music that you refuse to listen to and aren't true.

I told you. I tried. For like a minute, to enjoy metal, it failed. The sweeping generalizations were added effect.

Be honest, some of the cantankerous opinions you have left.. have been personal choice. I merely excised that right, also.

Perhaps the music itself, and the lyrics aren't misogynistic (always) but the scene and culture is.

I'm not certain how many metal concerts you've been to, Ausus, but that is not at all the experience I've had on the metal scene. Granted, mind you, that I was a young stud in highschool when I last was an active fan of metal, but I'd find it hard to believe (and disturbing) if the culture around the music had changed that dramatically.

It has always been my experience that the most often maligned subject in Metal Music is the "establishment" and -not- women.

See? that always kills me. Say something is misogynistic and everyman in the room shouts, no it isn't! It's against the establishment, society.. and that being what it is means we require our women to be scantily clad and hot for whatever we are grabbing our crotches over.

Ugh. Not a man hating feminist.. but sometimes.. seriously.

But Aus! The women like it.. we love metal.. blah, blah, blah.

Maybe 80's influenced Hard Rock is. KISS, Aerosmith, that sort. That's not metal, nor is it what I'm talking about.

It's divided into subgenres for a reason, so you don't have to be associated with the stuff you dislike. Thrash Metal and Progressive Metal are two different things, for example. I don't listen to or even like the former. That's definitely just noise.

My point is to disregard your preconceptions of the genre's culture, because they're not right, at least not the culture of the music I'm specifying, and I don't want to be associated with the one you're thinking of. They're different things. I personally have great respect for women... Many of the metal bands I listen to have female vocalists even. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bFSBYRlYq8g

I also don't know anything about this "against the establishment" stuff either. The lyrics of the stuff I listen to vary wildly. They're usually story concept albums, or about mythology. One is about Galileo for instance...

I think you're simply misusing the word in this case and certainly covering a wide genre of many different disciplines with a single errant stroke.

Go to lunch Light Ice.

Ahren, I'll listen in the morning, but this means I may subject you to something I like- *gasp* I hope you survive. Thanks for being, well, you. I was entertained.
