Something was wrong. Very wrong.
Ruby had kept glancing over at Papa Bear, trying to work out what it was without giving away anything of their new relationship, trying not to be overconcerned. The drive to work had been strained with Kiana bleating on about irrelevant stuff while Papa Bear was trying to juggle his driving with security and whatever that other thing was that had him totally distracted.
Ruby was out of her depth and didn't know how to help. She reckoned that the best thing she could do was to give him space to sort everything out without adding further to his troubles. He would tell her in his own time if he wanted to.
If Papa Bear was worried, then so too was his babygirl, but there was nothing she could do to help right now other than give him a hug and a kiss, both of which would cause him even more trouble. So the next best thing was to throw herself into her work.
The read-through began, with the usual introductions from the writer and the director, and Ruby concentrated on her character as they jumped from scene to scene. She drew on all her recent experiences of emotional turmoil and growing self-awareness to project her character with a power and force that surpassed anything she'd managed in the first film. It wasn't until she'd completed a little speech that concluded one particular scene, and looked up in the deafening silence that greeted her final words, that she understood that something had changed. They were all staring at her. Before she could ask what was going on they suddenly started clapping, even standing, applauding. She actually got a standing ovation. Unheard of.
Ruby blushed deep red, embarrassed, pleased, overcome with surprise, eyes down as she tucked the moment away as a precious memory. She sensed that the change she had noticed was more about how they all viewed her now. Was it possible, just possible, that she had earned their respect? She didn't know, and she couldn't talk about it with Papa Bear because he had enough on his plate.
For now, the best way that she could help him was by making his team's job as easy as she could.
