What does it matter? If they were mispronouncing it purposefully, to annoy you, that would be insulting, I suppose, but it doesn't sound like that's the case. So other people's linguistic abilities are not as honed as yours, so what?

I have a good friend named Megan who pronounces her name "May-gen". So that would be my first instinct if I came across someone else with that name.

I have a relatively simple ten-letter surname that's pronounced exactly as it's spelled. Over the past 60 years or so, I've heard it mispronounced in more ways than a sensible person would think possible, from making the initial vowel sound long rather than short, to eliminating the middle syllable, to completely mangling it in ways that its letters could in no way support. It used to annoy the crap out of me, until I realized that those who mispronounced it were almost invariably the ones who can't read for crap, haven't read a book since they were last forced to do so (probably in middle school, for a book report), and generally have to sound out words of more than four letters.

I've gotten to the point where I just quietly correct them, slooooowly, as if explaining something complex to a mentally-challenged person. Once. After that, I adopt Meeeeegan's method of ignoring them when they mispronounce it, until they either get it right or try my first name, which is almost un-mispronounce-able.

I have a common first name that nobody mispronounces.

But, when I introduce myself to someone, I like them to use the name that I myself use. If I wanted to be called by the (also common) shortened version of my name, I'd introduce myself using that shortened version.

NOBODY who is close to me uses the shortened version, and I never use it. Only people who don't know me well use it.

When people use the shortened version it probably annoys me more than it should, but it feels like someone I don't know or like giving me a bear hug - it has that jarring effect of inappropriate, unwelcome attempted intimacy.

The thing I don't get is when a person has only heard my name from me saying it and they still call me the wrong name. I can understand if they just read my name, but how do you get it wrong when you've only heard it?

Plus, my name is the title of a somewhat famous movie.

And no one ever calls me by MY name. My sisters name is different from mine by two letters and it's more common and most people call me that. Sometimes they call me Michelle. And, oddly enough, a large majority of them call me Wanda - I do not understand that one since it doesn't even START with the same letter as my name.

I suppose for once it's good to be an ignorant non-native-speaker. It had never occured to me, that Megan would be pronounced May-gen.

What I find stupid, is people coming up with non-standard ways of pronouncing or spelling very regular names and then getting annoyed when no one gets it right.

Seriously. It's gotten so bad, where I live, that most people can't spell my kids names, and I spelled them in the standard way - but everyone ASSUMES that I must have spelled them differently because everyone else does. Doing something different because everyone else is doing it ... Am I the only one who sees the irony here? I refuse to be faddish!!

I looked up my name's meaning when I was about 15 when my mom got her very first "Baby Names Book". Funnily enough, pearls ARE my favorite!

Meh-gan is pretty much perfect. I don't understand some people's proclivity to pronouncing an 'e' as an 'ay' sound sometimes, especially with my family because they've all literally known me my whole entire life and still do it.

Even my own mother does it for Chrissakes. Southern Accent FTL.

Try having a VERY common first name, a name that sounds no where close to your siblings' names, and a mother who calls you by those siblings' names. In other words, my own mother did not mispronounce my name...she just could never get it straight.

OH MY GOD MY MOM DOES THAT ALL THE TIME!!!

She calls me her sister's name, or my daughter's name -every-. -single-. -day-.

The few times she does get my name correct, she doesn't pronounce it right.

ETA: Here in the South, Megan is one of the most common Girl's names. I went to school with Seven other Megan's so I totally understand how you feel!

My guess for D2mlg's name is Troy or Zorba.

My name is really rare, or rather it was really rare until the 2000s. Now it's been given to lots of babies, but I'm still the only one even close to my age that I know of with my name. So I understand that people don't necessarily recognize it when they first hear my name, and the spelling/pronouncing isn't really a problem, as we pretty much spell phonetically. The strangest I've been called a minute after introducing myself is Jenna. What does Jenna have in common with Seela?? (Ok, an e and an a.)

I don't understand why anyone gets upset by name mispronunciation or misspelling, if the intent is not malicious. But, like I said, that's just me. I know that it really bothers lots of people. I've heard that Richard Dreyfus goes postal when people pronounce his last name as "Dry-fuss" instead of "Dray-fuss".

L has the worst time with language, he's forever mixing up names or mispronouncing them. He doesn't do it purposefully; he tries very hard to get it right. I would hate to think of someone directing the kind of anger you have expressed, at him, for something he can't help.

No, someone who doesn't know me can mispronounce it a time or two and I'll correct them -gently-. My ire is towards people who have known me since I was born and STILL do it.
