I have heard of that show. I will never watch it. Not so much because of the disgusting content but because my hackles go up when I know someone is trying to manipulate me. The producers of that show know how most of the population feels about these pageants and the participants and they are banking on that "train wreck" effect. Ratings, ratings, ratings.

I get you. But then, I will buy Walker's Spanish Chicken Paella potato chips because I think it will be the worst thing on earth, but I want to make sure.

I've seen it. Once. Because I was sitting in the waiting room in an ER and didn't have a choice about which channel would be on. It was pretty ridiculous, but typical of most reality shows; drama leading to ratings. If the parents aren't like the parents on that show then they wouldn't let them on the show because that doesn't get ratings.

I won't play their game.

That's how I feel about most reality shows.

I think there's nothing wrong with telling a child they are attractive, if the motive is to make them feel good about themselves. But, yeah, parading them around and instilling the idea that "pretty" is quantifiable and that if they fall short of the mark they will "lose" is flat-out abusive.

Usually, the reason people remark on how pretty a child is is because they don't know the child. What are they going to do, remark on how smart they are? They just met them, and don't know if they're smart. They can't remark, either, on patience, kindness, or any other things worth striving for, because they just met the child. What they can remark on is how they look, because that's all they know at that point.
