J wants me to get SCUBA certified... I keep telling him he has a really great sense of humor.

It's a piece of cake. When you are diving on a shallow reef in the Carribean and enthralled with the beauty of it, your fears will vanish.

one way we decided to make our relationship stronger was to pick a similar hobby to learn and work at together. we picked guitar. or rather he picked guitar. i keep told him he's cheating since he used to be the guitarist for a band, but he says hes forgetten most of it so he has torelearn almost all of it.
Tell him if you've got to learn a new instrument, so does he - and suggest piano - or accordion.

accordian?!? why would i punish myself??

we both already have guitars... he has several from when he used to play more and i got one a few years ago from an aunt that i just never learned how to play
<Sigh> I have no guitars anymore. Gave them up when the arthritis in my fingers made it too painful to play for more than 20-30 minutes. I miss my Martin D15 and Guild F412 :( I hope whoever's playing them now appreciates them.

P.S. Ye gods, out of curiosity, I just looked up the prices on them now  The Martin *starts* at $800 now, and the Guild at $2000+. I *knew* I should have held on to them!

*Minor issues*

Issue #1 - At 5, a camp counselor ordered everyone out of the pool, and threw me in 12 foot deep water to "Teach me to stop being such a wimp" (I was the slowest kid in swim lessons). I can swim, but water and I are not the best of buddies. LOL

Issue # 2 - I have mild claustrophobia. Just enough that I don't like my face covered, but apparently that is not a good combination with SCUBA diving. LOL

So at this point, the plan is that I might not get SCUBA certified this trip, but at some point he'll have his (Master Diver) friend who teaches at the resort come over, and the two of them will teach me in the pool at the house until I feel comfortable enough to finish the certification thingie.

He firmly believes I'll love it once I get down to the reefs, and promises we'll never go more than 30-40 feet down (ahahahaha... "only 30-40 feet", such the funny man with the joking and everything...), but I'm still not so sure about the fantabulousness of the SCUBA thing. LOL

Scuba diving is in the same list as 'learning to fly'. In other words, HELL WOULD FREEZE OVER before I learned to do that.

Lol, I learned to rockclimb because of an ex. Well that and necessity as I would have had to live on a beach for the rest of my life if I didn't.....

I hate heights as a rule, but am really glad I learned how to do it and its was great for the ol figure.....my body never looked as good as it did then.

Mmm, maybe I need to start again....

I'm one of those people who can't climb steps that you can see through - I freeze up about halfway up and someone has to come drag me the rest of the way. I get vertigo standing on chairs. It's not just a matter of a small phobia, it's a HUGE phobia.

To tell the truth, I'd scuba dive before I did anything that required me being up high. I took stuff to make me sleepy to get through all my plane flights recently. I won't go on bridges unless I know I'm going to be able to drive in the middle. (Easier to pretend that way.) Hell, I go at 7:45 in the morning, every other week, to get my Humira treatments? Why so early? Cause if I go any later I'll have to take the tram - which is actually an instrument of satan. It's this tiny thing that hangs from wires and goes from the hospital (on the hill) down to the waterfront. I'm not sure how far up it is, but the one time I road it I nearly puked. The operator kept saying 'Ma'am, are you ok?' cause I looked like I was gonna pass out. *shudders*

ROFLMAO Oh Graceanne, I do know how you feel. I'm not bad with steps but ladders were always a no no. and I completely know what you mean about the tram. I think I have a combination of agoraphobia and claustrophobia lol
I hate flying, absolutely loathe it. I get so pretrified I cry and shake and hyperventilate. I think its a combination of being stuck in a confined space and the fear of dying lol. Its the same with the London underground when it gets really busy.......urgh *shudder*

But the thought of scuba diving is unnerving to me....I think because of the sea....I mean its just sooooo vast.

As for scuba

I have been scuba diving exactly once. I am glad I did it, but I will probably never do it again. If you think you might want to try scuba diving someday, don't read further!

My scuba diving adventure happened in October 2006. We were on a cruise to Bermuda, and there was a company offering sort of "discover scuba" tours - no experience necessary, all equipment provided, for about $100. So we went out there, and my wife needed a prescription eyemask - her eyes are -9, and the closest mask they had was -4.5, but we figured she and I would stick together and she'd get some enjoyment out of it, especially since water is refractive (or something like that).

On the boat out to the dive site, the guides gave us a little demonstration of how to use the equipment, etc. It took maybe 20-30 mins to get out there. The most important thing, they said, was properly equalize your ears as you descend - if you don't, you can damage your hearing. (That should have kept me away...I'm an interpreter, I don't want to risk my hearing!) The method they showed us for equalizing is called the Valsalva maneuver.

So we got out to the dive site, and we did the "giant step" entry into the water. We practiced breathing, and each of us descended individually with a guide. My wife and I were descending at the same time so we were focused on our guides and not each other. It turned out that her mask kept leaking...that -4.5 mask didn't fit her properly and she made it to the bottom but couldn't see so she had to go back up and never got to dive. I didn't realize this until the end when we resurfaced and she was already up there.

So while I was descending, I was trying to do the Valsalva maneuver. But the guides had never checked to make sure we could do it properly, and...well...I didn't! I felt an incredible splitting pain in my left ear and I immediately started using the sign they taught us for OW FUCK SOMETHING IS WRONG TAKE ME UP NOW HOLY SHIT!!! So the guide took me up but asked if I wanted to try again, and I decided the pain was getting tolerable and I didn't want to miss the trip completely. So we went down, and I did it properly this time, and we went around a shipwreck and saw the fish etc.

Then the guide I was following (with another customer) made a sign I couldn't understand. (The whole time I was thinking the trip would be much more educational and fun if they knew sign language!) So she made this sign, and I nodded like "sure, whatever" and she led us into a natural tunnel. I thought "hmm, this is kind of scary, but okay, I'll do it." I never noticed that the tunnel angled down sharply...until I felt the same terrible pain in my RIGHT ear. I think I screamed into my regulator, and the guide came back and pulled me out of the tunnel. The rest of the trip was uneventful.

That night at dinner, I realized I couldn't hear very well. Another night later in the cruise, there was blood on my pillow. Fortunately we had taken a bus to the cruise port in New York, so I didn't have to fly home! I went to my doctor immediately and told her what happened. She looked in my ears and said "wow...you have HUGE holes in your eardrums." She had me go to a specialist the very same day, and he had to pull a giant blood clot out of my left ear - ew! But I healed up within a month, fortunately, and my hearing is back to where it was previously.

So that is my story of scuba diving. Sorry it was so long! It's a fun adventure story to tell. I do have pictures here though.

*Squeezes eyes tight, sticks fingers in her ears, and sings LALALALALALALALA at the top of her lungs*

I keep trying to explain to J that I am not a brave person, and the whole scuba diving and climbing some waterfall thingie? He is going to experience exactly how wimpy I can be.

He keeps reminding me I'm freaking leaving the country for the first time ever, to meet a guy who answered my personals ad 3 weeks ago, which means the "not brave" argument doesn't hold water... and I will be learning to SCUBA and climb a waterfall. LOL

oh - if you need someone to tend and care for all your vintage undies while you are away you know how to reach me :D

OK.. first of all, Etoile's experience was, through no fault of her own, due to inadequate training. You don't just say to someone "here's the regulator and here's how you clear your ears, jump in!" She and her wife had no business in open water and a reputable dive operation never would have taken them out. This is no reflection on Etoile and her wife, if you don't know SCUBA, you wouldn't know that was a bad situation.

Secondly..I gotta agree with J on the traveling to meet a strange man and bravery thing.

Thirdly, I've read some of your posts..most notably the one concerning rice and salt in the high heeled shoes while standing in the corner. That post was not written by a wimp! :D

hee hee hee

(I do know J will hang out with me in a 5½ foot deep pool as long as it takes to not have a panic attack, and it'll be gorgeous when I am comfortable enough to dive the reefs... but the idea of it still makes me queasy. LOL)
