THE LAST ELECTION THREAD!! (I hope!!)

Hey, Cheyenne, I checked the msnbc.com exit poll for Wisconsin a little while ago.. Bush is gonna win by about 6 pts. Nader killed him there... Among men Bush ran 53% to 39% for Gore, with 6% going for Nader. Only 1% of women voted for Nader, but Gore's advantage among women was only about 6 points. Never dreamed he'd win the state by that much.

Okay so if you win the Popular vote, you win?? Is that basically what your saying? And how can someone win only three of the four votes? Does that mean in that State one person will be sitting under the oppsition?

Yes Lasher I AM confused.

See this is where I get a little lost, as our Politics are diffrent in that way.

Okay If I ask a lot of questions it's because I DO want to understand, so please bear with me if you can.

I've seriously only seen one Gore lawn sign anywhere in the area against a sea of signs for Bush. They couldn't stock them fast enough at the campaign headquarters. And the only person I know who voted for Gore in this state, and I'm not positive, but I suspect my dad! :D

Even if Bush loses the race, at least he won WI and TENN. And that makes me a happy camper.

Come on California- vote for Bush!!!

p.s. Is it bad to admit I just did a little dance in my living room?

LOL, it is confusing, Nicole.

If you win the popular vote in a state, you win that state's electoral votes.

Now, what can happen is that someone can win enough states to get enough Electoral votes to win, but if the win those states by real small margins, and the other guy wins the rest of the states by really big margins, the guy that overall got the most popular votes could lose the electoral vote. It's happened before. And it might happen tonite.

The reason that Gore only won 3 of the 4 Electoral votes in Maine is because in Maine and Nebraska, the guy that wins the state gets two electoral votes, and then the other electoral votes goes to the guy who wins the popular vote in each of the Congressional districts. Maine has 2 congressional districts. Gore won the popular vote in one, Bush one the popular vote in the other. Each of them gets one Electoral vote for that.

It's definitely confusing.

USAToday just took Florida back from Gore.

Bush just picked up West Virginia, Missouri, and New Hampshire... I think I called those hours ago.

USAToday just gave New Mexico to Gore... It's the only one I've been wrong on so far, dammit. And I said it was really, really close, so...

Okay I think I'm understanding now.

I do know that you would all be laughing at me right now. Here I am sitting here going between this thread and USA Today refreshing them at 2-3 minute intervals, I have no clue what is happening anywhere else on this site or the World for that matter.

Bet you didn't think the rest of the world cared what happened on your Electral Day.

Ok, just took a look at more exit polls.... Nevada is pretty solid for Bush, and it looks like he'll take Iowa by about 1 point also, but it's pretty tight.

Looks to me like Bush is in the lead so far, am I correct in thinking that?

Just be glad I'm not next to you, I would be asking twice as much as I am now.

It's a lot closer than it looks at the moment. In about 15 minutes polls will close in California, Oregon, Washington, and Hawaii... Almost immediately you'll see California jump into Gore's column. It would be a huge shock if it didn't, and that'll even things up a bit.

Funny thing is, it now looks like Gore can't win without Florida. No one would've thought that when the night began.

So what your saying is that the Western Sates will go with Gore, and he really needs Florida to win?

You know, somehow I don't think anyone is fighting over Alaska's electoral votes. Grrr. Alaskans are important too.

No matter who wins the election, isn't democracy in action great? The real story to me is that the vote is heavy- people cared enough to get out and make their choice for who they want to lead them!

See that is one major Difference, over here you HAVE to vote and if you don't you get fined.

I like that we have to vote, because then if we want to complain we have the right I think. If you don't vote don't feel that you can complain.

Nicole and other esteemed members of the Board who are still wondering about this Electoral College business, despite the wonderful lecture from Professor Lasher, try here. It may not help, but it does have lots of pretty colors and some links to click for fun.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh pretty colors. (LOL) :D

Well, the way it looks now, from what I can see from the exit polls, Wisconsin, Iowa, Arkansas, Colorado, Arizona and Nevada should go for Bush. And Alaska is safe for Bush.

Gore should win California and Hawaii.

The last polls I saw had Oregon leaning towards Bush, and Washington leaning towards Gore.

Now, if the states I listed for Bush all go his way, Gore has to win California, Oregon, Washington, Hawaii and Florida to have enough electoral votes to win.

Or I could be wrong somewhere, LOL.

Just took a look at exit polls from the West coast states that are undecided. Gore should win Washington, but Bush has a pretty good margin in Oregon and that should be the one that puts him over the top. Without Florida, that would give Bush a 271-267 win in the Electoral college.

You missed your calling in life, Lasher. I'm wearing a path in my carpet between the TV in the living room and the computer trying to keep up. I hope you are right!

One could hope. Man I ain't had this much fun in years!!

It's still tight. The exit poll numbers I've seen have Iowa and Arizona within a point to a point and a half. Florida is really tight, 2 pts for Gore in one poll I've seen, but dead even in another. I still can't believe those boneheads tried to call it that early.

I'm not sure why some states haven't been called yet. Wisconsin, Arkansas, Nevada aren't all that close. Washington should've been called by now. Oregon isn't close either.

It could still go either way, but Gore can't win without Florida and it looks like Bush is holding at about 3% in the results I've seen.

Ain't it wonderful?

I love this. The Republic in action! Not just the presidental race but the Senate may end up split 50-50, and the House may end up close as well. We may actully get to see these guys work. Imagine a Senate where no one can miss a vote, and the Vice President has a real job! Cool! It's about time.

And if there ever was an election year that proves "every vote counts" this has got to be it.

I also saw two people register to vote for the first time while I was standing in line early this morning waiting my turn. In all the years I've voted at this same polling spot, I've never yet seen a new person come in to register. I don't care who they voted for, they came to vote and that is cool!

Well, it's still too close to call, but it's never too early to start bitching.

Today it became very clear to me. No matter who wins this election, the President for the next four years is not going to have the support of a majority of the population. Neither party was able to deliver a candidate that people could believe in. My prediction for tonight is that whoever wins will end up serving for a maximum of four years, perhaps even less, and will probably do more to help the opposing party than their own. Call me a cynic, but I just don't see strong leadership rearing its head again in this country for many moons.

May the lesser of two evils win.
