The Let's Help Each other Get Healthier Thread!!!

And you should be doing it for you, but if fear of punishment or punishment itself will help you form the habit of eating healthy then i don't see it as a bad thing.

My problem right now isn't not eating healthy...it's not eating..period. It starts by skipping meals because i am "not hungry," but becomes a real slippery slope for me rather quickly.

i think since the "punishment i had in mind is more gym time (healthy) it should be ok, but then again im not the one deciding whats ok.

and ive been there. try making sure you eat at least one meal a day. if you havnt eaten anything by suppertime, make yourself eat. make that your checkpoint. or make lunch your checkpoint, if you havnt eaten by lunchtime, make yourself eat. etc etc. keep an energy bar or a granola bar in your purse so being on the go cant be your excuse not to eat anything.

The punishments I chose, given to my physio, are as follows:
No fruit smoothie (my favourite after-workout treat)
No weekend restaurant takeout (may parents bring me this on weekends, usually twice.)
No butter for 2 days.
Hardly flogging or prostrating myself on a bed of nails.
The rewards are what you want to work for.
I did end up losing a pound after all, so I only have to lose one more before I start updating my crawler again.
And she upped it to FOUR cardio workouts of half an hour for a reward! grrr.
I did a lot of ab work today, which actually had me swearing like a sailor. If I wasn't so committed I would have quit right after the dead bug exercise.
But I digress...

I'm Getting Serious!

Hey all!

Am back from moving my sister across the country. Congrats to everyone for "keeping on keeping on" despite any setbacks.

I am at 178 again (15 pounds over my lowest in the past year), but still 35 less than I started with. 12 pounds came during the last 3 months when work kept me from regular exercise and travel had me eating too much and too poorly. I was surprised that I didn't gain while I moved my sis across the country. (Don't know how you folks do it in the midwest - the night I got her to her Iowa destination, we ate dinner in a Mexican restaurant that literally served no vegetables.)

Anyway, I'm getting very serious. I know what I'm doing sounds extreme, but after I didn't lose any weight between February - April, even though I was exercising 1.5 - 2 hours daily and eating 1600 calories per day, am feeling desperate. I think that had as much to do with my regaining weight as anything else.

So am pulling out every trick I know that legitimately speeds up metabolism - rotation diet (varying calorie intake from 2 days each of 900 to 1200 to 1600 and then one 2000 day per week), rotation exercise (luckily have lots of tapes with very different routines), food combining, increasing my diet's alkalinity, upping my water intake, etc.

Aside from the calorie intake, it's not too far off from my regular way of eating - plenty of fruits and vegies and good fats, but am cutting out all sweets and alcohol except for 1x per week and all fried foods, period. I also like exercise - am not overtraining this time, though. About 1/2 hour to 45 minutes per day/6 days per week of conditioning, plus my regular walking. Will be seeing my Chinese treatment specialist next week at which time I'll begin acupuncture and start drinking nasty-tasting teas daily...

Am on day 2 (did well except for one slip with some flavored yogurt). Everyone wish me luck!

:D Neon

Time for me to join in here. I want to lose 25 lbs by Oct 12th. About 5 yrs ago I lost 80lbs and was down to what I considered a healthy wt. (the BMI chart said I was borderline overweight but I looked good and felt great) I have since gained back 25 lbs despite walking 3.25 miles 5 days a week, yoga class once a week with trying to do at least 30 minutes 5 days a week and getting on the treadmill for 30 min of incline work 2-3 times a week.

My diet is sporadic but I really try to watch portion sizes. I had oringinally lost the 80lbs in about 10 months on a strict SLim-Fast diet. I tried it again a few months ago and for whatever reason it just wasn't working out.

Plus now my migraines and sinus headaches have come back to where they are almost making non-fuctional. I have them everyday. I believe they are stress (and weather) related.

My plan--Eat more food--more veggies throughout the day. Drink more water. Try to cut down the coffee. Do more weight training.

I also will get to the dr, I haven't had a physical in over two yrs and I am due for a mammogram and to get my asthma medication re-evaluated.

Thanks for the thread.

Meh - 20 days out of 21 for my meds. I missed Sunday. <Sigh> Well, that's still a hell of a lot better than I'd been doing before gettin' in here. Thanks, y'all, and keep up the good work!

So my physio told me I shouldn't eat bread that had yeast in it. At all. She said that adding butter on top was adding insult to injury...something about breads and yeasts mimicking estrogen. I'm supposed to only have flatbread if I must.
I think this may be a sticking point. I'm willing to move away from white breads, except for soft pretzels, but I do love my breads. Bread is gooood. Long live bread.
I want a diet I can live with, not tolerate. I can cut down on bread, but I don't think I will ever eliminate it. Last week my dad made grilled vegetable panini sandwiches, which were on panini buns - he grilled the veggies and then the sandwiches - and they were awesome. I'm not giving up crap like that.

I have also discovered that I am more in control during the day if I start it with oatmeal, water and some veggies. Or fruit.

i finally worked up the courage to ask A to help me stay healthy by enforcing a punishment for eating badly. he thought it was a great idea but dismissed my ideas for effective punishments (like extra time at the gym). what he came up with was 50 push-ups, or 50 sit-ups. the push ups for the first day i eat badly, the situps for the second. the push ups for the third, back and forth, etc etc.

I may not be losing weight but I am losing inches!

A while ago I noticed that my shirt seemed to be sitting more nicely (my midriff is a definite problem area). Today I put on a tighter shirt than usual and noticed that there is definitely less there than before! :D When I showed my mum she said, "Well, if you keep it up you might go back to school with no fat on your tummy. Well, above the waist." You can see why I don't depend on her for praise.
Anyway, it turns out that at my last appointment the physiotherapist turned to the person at the desk and said, "You know, I think she is getting smaller!"
So it's noticeable to people who see me often.
I'm not going to push it though. Even though I'm tempted to see how I'm doing size-wise, I'm going to do the extra cardio for the next two weeks and then the last week of summer I'll check out how I'm doing re:sizes. What I'm wearing for summer is nice and loose so it's hard to gauge, but that's probably a good thing.
I'm already going to go back to school with more energy - it'd be great to go back looking better too.

May I (not-so) humbly refer you to posts #388 and 391 of this very thread? Far be it from a PYL to say, "I told ya so," but ... http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x95/Sir_Winston54/mrs_eusa_whistle.gif

, food combining,

Neon..Can you explain this to me a bit more?

mis...So glad A is going to help you keep on track, and i am proud of you for asking for the help you need.

SirW....Are you feeling any better after the med switch-up?

Ehhh...As for me, i am doing ok. Had a bit of a "heart to heart" with someone important, and it has helped to refocus me. (i L Y...forever and for keeps. ) i ate normally today, but still really watched my portions and such. Saturday is going to be my once a month "eat anything" day. i realized this morning that i haven't had a "free day" in about 6 weeks...and i need one. i'm craving a cheeseburger, and something sweet like nobody's business.

Hope everyone else is doing well!!!!

I think switching that one med from morning to night-time has helped. It's only been a few days since I actually made the switch - I stayed completely off it for 5 days to try to get most of it out of my system (it's one that builds up in your body) before making the change. My NP said that would make the timing change work better, so I've only been back on it for 3 days, and it generally takes 4-5 days to kick in when I've been off for a while. I do seem to have more energy during the day :nana: and am down to one nap a day :D instead of 2, 3, or 4  Since I quite often took a nap even *off* the anti-dep, I think my sleep pattern *may* be normalizing <crossed fingers>.

Free days are important! I've always been a firm believer that any program that didn't allow for regular free days was doomed to failure, because going from a strict program to maintenance allows too many opportunities to "blow up" on the newly-allowed treats (on maintenance), and lost weight/inches would come ballooning back. Build a free day into your schedule, and take advantage of it, even when it doesn't seem as important to you, because it is - your body is aware of it, even if you're not conscious of how good the treat is.

My phrasing and syntax in this post is abominable. I blame it on the past three hours of listening to babbling attorneys and witnesses. Please don't judge me by this post. <Sigh>

HM, food combining is controversial at best, in "legitimate" nutritional circles, and the one scientifically rigorous study done of the diet concluded that it has no weight loss benefits. However, it seems to work for me.

In a nutshell, it's based on the idea that different enzymes are used to digest starches, proteins, dairy, and various types of fruits, and that by not combining these foods, the body is better able to digest what we eat efficiently and fully. (Non-starchy vegies can be eaten with just about everything except fruit. Yogurt can be eaten with fruit, low-sugar citrus can be eaten with proteins.) Beans/legumes are generally considered to be a "no no" by strict adherants, although I eat them with both proteins and starches. Here is a a link.

I don't follow the diet rigorously (the system is very complex) but have found that following the basic rules regarding not combining these types of foods together does seem to help me lose weight more quickly and to digest my food better. One thing I notice is that I have more frequent and regular bowel movements, which to me is an indicator that food is moving more quickly and efficiently through my digestive system.

Glad that you have "refocused" and hope you enjoy your "anything" day. I agree with Sir_W that they are important. :D

I'm not sure what's going on with my health. I've had diarhhea worse than normal all week. I'm bleeding, and my foods going straight through. I feel a bit better today, but I'ms eriously considering doing a clear liquid diet for the next few days.

MIS, while I am generally not partial to the "punishment" as weight loss incentive idea, I love these ideas for "punishment." Methinks you lucky to have such a great Dom. Good luck! :D Neon

Graceanne, Please, please, please take care. What would we possibly do without your continuous wit around here! (In other words, no trips to the hospital, hopefully!) Neon

Midweek Check-In

Have done well so far - done a conditioning tape and walked everyday so far - seem to be getting back into a regular routine without over-doing it. Also food intake has been good and I've been following my "program." I don't want to jinx anything, but my clothes seem to already be a little looser! Will see when I weigh in on Sunday. :D Neon

Glad you are doing well, Neon and thanks for the link a few posts back.

i am so god-awful sick today. i woke up and felt ok, and then the nausea hit. (from some med. i began taking last night.) i thought lunch was going to stay down...but it didn't, and gross as it sounds, i am at the point of just "dry heaves." This is SO not good for me. It's not of my own doing...but still a triggering behavior.

LOL Thanks, neon. I'm hoping I just have some bug or the other, to tell the truth. I mostly wanted to let everyone know why I haven't been worrying about my caloric intake these days.
