The Official Authors' Hangout Halloween 2022 Contest Support Thread

Here is something else interesting. It has been 24 hrs since I have recieved a favorite, a vote, or a comment on any of my stories. Before that, I was getting at least a dozen a day.

Is it just me?
Probably a glitch, these things have happened before during contests, once it lasted long enough for Laurel to extend it for a few days.

My mates

My latest just moved within the last ten minutes, score wise, and a comment went up thirteen hours ago.

Just you ;).

I'm rethinking the one I had for this. It might be a little much in some ways.

But my back up would be what I consider one of my best sibling stories because it pays homage to a few supernatural elements while creating a bit of taboo mythos.

I'll decide over the weekend if I want to submit it. Now seeing there could be a stat glitch going on doesn't make me too eager at the moment

I say something and less than 30 minutes later, a favorite for a story comes through.

As near as I can tell, Friday afternoon (US) is a very low-activity time on Lit, and there are always runs and lags in voting anyway. I doubt there was a problem.

I picked up eight votes today on seven older stories--including the first two stories I put on Lit. None of those are in the Halloween contest, but it does mean there isn't a general problem with votes going through.

I've had 24 votes yielding a 4.71 rating, only two hearts, and five lovely comments. I'm happy but would love to see more people heart the thing.

And the score you see on their story isn't the same as they see on their control panel. The public view takes a while to update.

Or someone changing their vote, which would be dicky, but doable.
Oh. I did that. Am I not supposed to? In my case, as I read stories and find they are way more well written than mine... I have lowered the rating I gave myself initially.

I don't expect to win at all, but I'm glad I submitted something. Will publish tomorrow, I believe. I loved the Halloween theme allowing more of my creative writing to be on display, in addition to the smut! First time publishing in the BDSM category. Not really sure what the vibe is in that category but hope it's well received.

Just got hit by a 1 bomb, took the story down a full decimal
I can see why participation in contests is lower than I expected

I have not received any votes for days. I don't have enough "followers" to generate the votes.

Thanks Bazzle

You should put a link to your stories in your signature through the control panel.

That was interesting. No change in votes but the score dropped .02. How the hell does that work?
One vote comes in, one vote - slightly higher - gets swept in the ongoing micro-sweeps.

This is the first contest I’ve entered. I read the rules and a kind of ghost story popped into my head. As usual I posted in the LW category. Now I’m thinking that was a mistake. It could have gone in Group or Exhibitionitist, or horror. It’s harder to get high scores in LW.

Then in reading past stories, I thought that maybe I should have written an incest story. My highest scoring stories are incest, mainly because the LW haters love to tear me down.

any thoughts on how the category effects the score?
Should I write a second story just for the incest category?

There've been a million threads about how category affects the score.

The consensus is that some categories generate more views and/or more votes. Others are known for their trolls. I don't want to get into it all here; it's been discussed A LOT on here.

Bottom line: I think the honorable thing to do is to put things in the right category as often as possible. That said? I generally avoid LW. Not because my stories don't "belong" there, but because I know that category has a reputation, and that some readers enter it with preconceptions that are unfortunate.

That goes for contests as well as non-contests.

I write for the LW category, too.

Once you get over the idea that your writing might be the best ever story and worthy of a perfect rating and fawning comments, realize that the ratings don't really matter. I know my writing skills will never win any honest contest. So, I'm left with either dishonestly jacking up my own ratings with anonymous votes ... OR ... accept what I get in whichever category I choose to post.

I choose to just write what I want and allow the jackals to enjoy a good laugh over their powerless 1-bombs.

My latest went into SciFi & Fantasy, merely because it's about magic. But I was teetering on posting it to LW to poke the trolls there. My next story is complete and going through the final touch-ups before I post it to LW. And it will definitely get a shitload of 1's. I'll make their day.
