The Official Authors' Hangout Halloween 2022 Contest Support Thread

I've finished. I'll give it a once-over and then it's done. I like it.

This'll be my first submission typed on the Cloud. I'm nervous about that.

If you turn it in early, as long as you have the correct notes to admin, it will sit in pending until September 30 and go live with all the other early entrants

And you truly are overthinking it.
Not OP, but thanks for that. Didn't realise it would sit in pending.

I submitted my entry (the first competition I've entered here) a couple of days ago and was expecting it to go live any minute.

Is this contest on the same level as Summer lovin?
No, it's MUCH higher... because I made this support page

Actually I think all CONTESTS are on equal footing, it just depends on how hyped up the writers are. Don't get contests confused with writers' events, those are kind of like organized exercises. The Amorous Goods writers event is happening concurrently with the Halloween and my entry, Black Pearls, will be in both. There's no placing or prizes in an author organized challenge. It's a chance to see what a bunch of writers come up with given the same subject. "On the Job" was fun, "Geek Pride" was my favorite so far, I think my best work came out in AI A New Era

Was the AI the one I just read? (I'm sneaking and commenting at work so can't go searching it easily right now lol.)

And I will look for the writer's events now. Because yes, I don't have enough to do as is šŸ˜

*Logs into your companies VMware server to track your browsing history* Ummm no, that was geek pride you were looking at.

Was that you taking over my mouse?

And I don't think I read Geek Pride. I recall an agent named Ingersoll?

Yep, that's my girl Alicia. She changed her name several times in both stories when she changes her cover story, but her initials always remain AI. The bad guys never figured that out.

Omg. I must be one of the bad guys ... I never figured that out.

I'm sure this has already been addressed, but I didn't find it on a cursory viewing of the thread. Can we already post stories for the Halloween contest, or do we wait for September 30 or October 1?

This is what Duleigh mentioned to me ....

Fanfuckingtastic, thanks a kazillion for the info!

Because I've never done it before.

I had nearly 80 submissions go flawlessly the way I'm used to, but now? I have to change over. So I'll be skittish until I see that it's posted as I want it to look.
Ah, OK. I mistakenly thought you were worried about losing data. I use this method for almost all of my work, but I always download a .doc (Word) file from Google Docs and submit that. My formatting needs are basic, I usually use H3 for section headers and rare italics/bold. If I do try to copy-paste directly into the submission box, it ends up strange with line feeds and such. So I don't usually do that. On a couple of occasions, the posted stories had extra blank lines before and after section titles, but that was rare.

So I understand your reticence.

That's what I did: I downloaded as a .docx and then whisked it into the portal. I'm sure I'm worrying needlessly, but I'm not a tech wizard. Plus, I'm a happy Gen Xer who secretly believes nothing is ever truly saved unless it's on my own hard drive.

I don't want to wait two weeks to find out whether it worked, so I wrote a quick poem this evening and submitted it. But, of course, poems take so long to post that I might still be waiting awhile, lol.

You're braver than me, I still convert my .docx to .doc just to make sure it will go through

See, this? Right here? This is the kind of post that has me freaking the fuck out.

I don't like change in my computer routines.

But its advertised like Summer Lovin was with a page?

Yes, they all are. All the contests are equal.

The trick is not to confuse official site contests with the rapidly-proliferating author challenges and other themed "events."

Arrgh - story #1 was planned for 7,000 - 8,000 words, it just passed 28,000 and is just now concluding. Story #2 isn't going to be available on Day 1, but it will make the final deadline.

Hmm. My muse dropped another one this morning, and I already have a bunch of stories ready for this one.

I posted one which would have been good for the contest, certainly not a winner, I have no delusions on that. I post it early having forgotten about the contest and the one I'm contemplating may be to long for me to finish time. I may try and do a flash story or a story under 5,000 words for the contest. Then again, I may dig in to the U-Files (unfinished) and see if I have a nice horror or Halloween themed one in there I can finish and post.

Speaking of Muses, KeithD, mine has her bags packed and is threating another Florida vacation, complete with sex-on-the-beach, jell-o shots, and raunchy encounters with other muses.
