The Official Authors' Hangout Halloween 2022 Contest Support Thread

I've got two that were started a couple of years ago that I could probably finish if I was feeling either of them, but something else is on the front burner. I'm not risking the first forward momentum I've had in over a year by interrupting it.

Oh come on, I have 4 weeks before the deadline to submit is here.
That's plenty of time. I wrote White Castle Christmas in three days and while it didn't win the Christmas contest, it won the Best Humor and Satire Award for 2021.

I was debating on a second one, but its crazy long. Not that I haven't entered long pieces in the past(as long as 82k) but with this one I think I'll hold off, maybe do it as a few chapters down the line. Too bad its a homage to possession movies mixed with incest. The Exorcist meets Taboo.

My other one is ready, but I generally wait until the contest has been up for a few days before entering. My thought is you'll get more reads than on day one with the glut of early entries you'll be mixed in with

I must b prescient. I dated my first draft October. I am going away tomorrow until Friday evening and I won't have internet access or even a computer, so the draft will not be finished until October at the earliest...

#1 has been submitted! It's also an Amorous Goods story
Now I need to make sure the lap top has a good charge so I can work on #2 during Ian's rampage. Tuesday will be spent preparing for his visit.

Read back through both of mine when the boy was being too rambunctious to concentrate on writing. The one is still missing some significant setup that will require a fair amount of research. I skipped over it and left a placeholder. No way that one's seeing the light of day this year.

The other I need to transfer to Les, because what it's missing is a supernatural element, and one of my ( admittedly loose ) rules for this pen name is that it doesn't do sci-fi & fantasy. Other than that, it's manageable. There's already an air about the story that implies the supernatural, so it will slot right in without issue at the appropriate point after the sex scene, which I'd already written the first couple of lines for. Naughty bits, stir in a little witchcraft, and the ending.

Have to finish One Whore's Town first, though. I've got to figure out a reason for Betty to see something with her own eyes to bring her to the place she needs to be for the ending. The original plan got scrapped because the original plan for something else got scrapped when it felt off and I had a brainstorm that was so much better.

Now I need another one. LOL

So, I'm hopeful I can begin writing on the Halloween thingy tonight or tomorrow. I am finishing up some must-do work here today, handling my bundle of joy, who is cranky today. He had tummy trouble last night, so hopefully, he'll sleep more than usual. I haven't discovered my title yet, but I am hopeful something in the story will give me an idea for the title, anything is better than, To Be Determined. Anyway, I probably won't be around much today or tomorrow.

So, here's the deal and I need your honest opinion... no trick or treating me

I'm 17k into my Halloween Contest entry. It's a tale of one woman's passion to meet a ghost, and what happens when she finally does. There's only one problem... I haven't set it at Halloween. Bit of a bummer me thinks. Do I need to rewrite a little, or do you think it still fits into the guidelines given it is sort of scary?

Probably will put in non-human rather than erotic horror, but I'm not really sure where one morphs into the other. Any clues?

There is no requirement that the story be set at Halloween, you’ll be fine.

I have written ghost stories the past two years and put them in Erotic Horror. I did receive some negative feedback that they should have been in Non Human. I think I will put this years there, and you may want to do the same. It seems Horror readers are more into monsters and vampires than traditional ghost stories.

It will be fine. Ghosts are part of the Halloween theme.

I put my first ghost story ("Oscar's Place") into Erotic Horror and got the same feedback. It does seem like Non-human is the place for ghost stories.

Well I have put my "Pop Art" in for submission. It is based on M R James's Mezzotint. So I will be intrigued to see how it goes down. I am expecting like a lead balloon. However as I have a queue for submission, I wonder how long it will take to actually appear...its taking over 2 weeks for one of my stories!

It happens. Sometimes it depends on category. I submitted a poem at the beginning of the month that's still working its way through. It doesn't mean there's anything wrong with the submission.

Contest entries tend to jump to the front of the line.

If you check your Halloween contest entry it is probably still sitting in Pending but it is no longer marked "Pending" but now has a nice orange NEW tag and has a date of 10/01/2022. They'll all be released from the gate on Saturday.

It's not that quick. I will be happy if it's published in October! 😂

Anything already submitted and authorized will appear on the date it shows for the publication to go live. Probably tomorrow, as that is when the contest officially opens.

Yeah, I've got a couple of stories in a log jam in "pending". I will see if this one clears it!
